Packers Schedule Uninjured Brett Favre for Season-Ending Surgery
The Green Bay Packers announced this morning that quarterback Brett Favre will miss the remainder of the season to undergo major surgery on his right throwing elbow. The team says the procedure will likely end his career.
The Packers also disclosed that Favre’s elbow is not injured.
“It’s pretty significant to lose Brett like this, especially since he’s started every game for us since 1992,” said head coach Mike Sherman. “But being that we’re 0-3 and that we drafted a first round quarterback in Aaron Rodgers this year, perhaps it’s a blessing in disguise that we can start rebuilding now instead of waiting for Brett to retire. I wish him all the luck in whatever he does in retirement.”
Favre – who has only five touchdowns to seven interceptions so far this season to go with a mediocre 72.7 passer rating – said he was surprised to learn the news last night.
“Mike called me at home last night and told me that it looked like I was going to have to have season-ending surgery. It was a complete shock to me,” said Favre. “I asked him for what reason, and he said my elbow. I told him my elbow felt fine, but he insisted that I had to have season-ending surgery on it. And I hear it might be serious enough to end my career, too, so I may just go ahead and announce my retirement.”
The Packers say they wholeheartedly support Favre if he decides to simply retire and avoid surgery.
“We all know an invasive surgical procedure like that is a pretty serious thing,” said Sherman. “I’m pretty sure he could live a normal life without getting the surgery. Actually, I’m positive. All he has to do is announce his retirement and we’ll cancel his appointment with the orthopedist. It’s that simple. But he has to say he is retired. And then sign some paperwork stating that he won’t try to comeback. That’s non-negotiable.”
Favre said he will take a few days to weigh his options and then make his decision.
“I asked if I could get a second opinion on my elbow and they told me that if I did they would void my contract, so that’s not an option,” said Favre. “I never pictured my career ending this way though, and I don’t want to go out as the quarterback of an 0-3 team. That’s why I’m leaning towards not retiring and getting the surgery and coming back next year. Although now they tell me that if I get the surgery that they’ll probably poke around in my rotator cuff, too. So that would make it even harder to make a comeback.”
