Umpire finds pitcher's wallet, but gets no reward

Oct 06, 2005

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Padres reliever Trevor Hoffman was going to offer a $100 reward to the man who found his wallet, then had second thoughts when he realized who it was.

"I thought it might look funny, giving money to an umpire," Hoffman said.

Hoffman took a cab from the team hotel to Busch Stadium on Tuesday and left his wallet in the back seat.

Umpire Ed Montague later got into the same cab and recovered the wallet. Montague was waiting at the clubhouse door when Hoffman approached.

"He asked me for some identification and I couldn't understand why he would be doing that," Hoffman said Thursday.

When Montague handed the wallet over, Hoffman started to offer him a reward.

"I stopped short of doing it when I realized how it would look," Hoffman said.

I see Hoffman's strike zone shrinking big time the next time Montague is behind the plate. :laff:

Hoffman should have given the ump some sort of reward.

Hoffman should have given the ump some sort of reward.

Why? Don't you think that it would look really bad? Trevor is known for his generosity in the San Diego area and I'm sure when he's retired, he will do something nice for Montague.

And I wonder what people would say if he did give the umpire the reward, prolly call Hoffy a cheater. :hmm:

yagsy: Hoffman does not have to publicize his reward. He can reward the ump privately. It does not look bad as long as he does not publicize it.

But he can't count on the umpire to not publicize it. I've also been around ball players, there are way too many other people involved that the news would get out very easily. I do not agree with you on this at all. Trevor did what he thought was best for his team. His response says this. But you can choose to believe what you wish, as anyone else. :)
