Orioles name Jim Duquette VP for Baseball Operations

The Orioles today announced that Jim Duquette has been named Vice President for Baseball Operations.

In his new position, Duquette will assist Executive Vice President for Baseball Operations Mike Flanagan in the day-to-day operations of the department, including contract negotiations, assisting in salary arbitration and player personnel decisions at the major league level.

"Jim brings a wealth of experience in the daily operation of a major league baseball team, from bottom to top," said Flanagan. "He has been involved in every aspect of the baseball front office from scouting and the minors to contract negotiations and running a department. We're thrilled that he sees the direction in which we are going and wants to be a part of it."

"I am extremely pleased that Jim Duquette has decided to join the Orioles as our Vice President of Baseball Operations," said Orioles owner Peter G. Angelos. "He is widely respected among baseball professionals and was highly recommended for the position. I am confident Jim will be a major contributor to our effort to strengthen the team. We are certainly happy to have him on board."

Duquette, 39, has worked for the Mets for 14 of his 15 seasons in professional baseball, including serving as interim General Manager and then General Manager for 15 ½ months, from June 1993 through the 2004 season. He began as an assistant in the Mets' minor league and scouting departments in 1991 and was named Assistant Director of Scouting/Minor Leagues in 1995.

On September 26, 1996, he was named Director of Player Development for the Houston Astros, a position he held for one year before rejoining the Mets October 10, 1997 as Director of Player Personnel. A year later, he was appointed Assistant General Manager, where he assisted then-GM Steve Phillips in the day-to-day operations of the department and oversaw all aspects of the Mets' player development system and Latin American field operations.

He was promoted to Senior Assistant General Manager in December 2000 before being named interim GM on June 12, 2003, when Phillips resigned. He was appointed the Mets' 10th General Manager on October 28, 2003, serving in that capacity until September 30, 2004, when he was named Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations, working under Omar Minaya.

Duquette was a first team All-New England outfielder at Williams College in Massachusetts and is a cousin of Dan Duquette, former Executive Vice President and General Manager with the Boston Red Sox. He currently lives in Connecticut with his wife and three children.
