Results of AP-AOL poll on attitudes about baseball

.c The Associated Press

The Associated Press-AOL Sports telephone poll on attitudes about professional baseball is based on telephone interviews with 1,000 adults - including 394 self-described baseball fans - from all states except Alaska and Hawaii and some areas recovering from Hurricane Katrina. The interviews were conducted Oct. 11-13 by Ipsos-Public Affairs.

Results were weighted to represent the population by demographic factors such as age, sex, region and education. An X designates less than 1 percent.

No more than one time in 20 should chance variations in the sample cause the results to vary by more than 3 percentage points from the answers that would be obtained if all Americans were polled. The margin of error for 394 baseball fans is plus or minus 5 percentage points.

There are other sources of potential error in polls, including the wording and order of questions. Results may not total 100 percent because of rounding.

This poll is stupid IMO.. Most all of the questions should be geared towards actual baseball fans..

Question #1 already tells me that these answers are not going to be accurate when you have 64% of the questionees not even liking the sport...

It costs too much to attend a game, 22 percent (22)

22%??

Thats a pretty high # considering that the players making too much money is 29% and drug use is 23%... It blows my mind to think that almost the same % of people think that the biggest problem with the sport is price of games and drug use.. What the hell is worng with that picture??

Also, have any of those people actually been to a game? Seriously, what other sport can you get 3 people into a game and get good seats for about $50-$60? Hell, it costs about that amount for 1 ticket to a NFL, hockey or basketball game... Of the big 4, baseball BY FAR is the best priced ticket...

Question #3 on were asked only to people who responded as being baseball fans, so only one and two were for all the questionees.

well, i probably spend an additional 1,300 dollars at the game per year (around 25 bucks) just for myself on top of the 27 bucks on the ticket. while i have no problem with that for myself, a family of four it does get a bit expensive. ;)

My biggest beef is with question #2... If you are not a fan of the game, why ask what the biggest problem with the game is?

Agreed, but thats a helleva lot cheaper than any other sport..

I did a little research with all season tickets..

To get season tickets for argueably one of the best MLB teams, the Yankees, you can get a season ticket for $810... Thats for 81 games...

For one of the worst NFL teams, the Arizona Cardinals, you can get their worst ticket for $200 for the remaining 5 games... I am assuming it is about $320 for the full season at $40 per game average.. So thats $320 for 8 games..

In the NBA, I took the Orlando Magic.. For 41 home games, you can get the 2nd worst ticket at $660..

In the NHL, I took the Atlanta Thrashers and for 41 home games, you can get their cheapest ticket for $616....

So for a couple of hundred bucks more you can get twice the amount of games and that is for one of the BEST teams in baseball, compare to the lower tier teams in the other 3 sports...

It blows my mind to think that almost the same % of people think that the biggest problem with the sport is price of games and drug use.Drug use and the cost of attending baseball games weighs heavy on my mind, James :freak: I advocate both the legalization of marijuana and cheaper tickets prices :smokin:

Seriously, ticket prices are going to go up for everything. I'm a cheap, miserly old man when it comes to the ticket prices for some things now. I mean, my goodness! I saw Jimmy Buffett back in the 70s for 40-cents a longneck and whatever tip money you put in the jar, so paying $60 or more to see him now seems outrageous, just as it is when I think of spending $3.50 for a LF mezzanine seat in the Astrodome in the 70s and and spending $70 for a seat in the LF bleachers an Game 5 of the NLCS. It hurts for a cheap old guy on a budget to dig that deep, but the ticket prices we can see since it's a cost that's up-front and we're the ones sitting back here saying, "Yeah, sign that juiced-up slugger so we can win."

The part that really gets me is the $3.50 for a bottle of water, $4.00 for a hot dog, $7.00 for a beer, $20 to park. These are the hidden, or at very least disguised, costs of the game. And if you're going to charge me all of that to go to a game, don't give me goddam commercials on the Big Screen out in center that the taxpayers paid for, give me effin' replays, same as the the folks at home who are just paying a $39.99 per month cable bill. The game itself has become the by-product, that's what bugs me the most.

oh i did forget to mention the another $1,000 i probably spent at the bars after saturday games in the summer. lol

at least its not 7 bucks for a beer yet here, willie. at wrigley its still 5.25 on the concourse and 5.50 in the stands.

I agree about that drinks and food being ridiculous at games... Luckily for me I am usually good with a soda and a bag of peanuts... Not much of a drinker at games, except when Willie and Bill are buying next summer;)

Playoff tix are pricey as they go up in cost in every round.. When I went to the 1st round in Florida a few years ago, tix prices were abou the same as the regular season.. I think I got in for less than $25 a game and had decent seats... They went up probably $20-$30 a seat during the LCS and then were totally ridiculous for the WS....
