Giants owner Wellington Mara dead

DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Wellington Mara, the patriarch of the New York Giants and one of the faces of the NFL for more than 80 years, died today after a long battle with cancer. He was 89 years old.

The co-owner of the team since 1925, when he was just a 14-year-old boy, Mara had been a fixture on the sidelines of Giants practices for decades. It took a recurrance of skin cancer, which he had been battling for 25 years, to keep him away from training camp this year.

In May he had cancerous lymph nodes removed from under his arm and neck, though he still occasionally made his way out to Giants Stadium. In recent weeks his conditioned worsened and he was in and out of the hospital. He left the hospital last week and watched the Giants’ dramatic 24-23 win over the Denver Broncos from home.

Mara is survived by his wife, Ann, and 11 children - - including John, who has been running the day-to-day operations of the Giants for years - - and 40 grandchildren.

"He was an extraordinary man of impeccable character, integrity, honesty, compassion and fairness," said Baltimore Ravens owner Art Modell, a long-time friend of the Maras. "He had all the attributes you want in a human being. He was a friend of mine for 45 years. He was more like a brother to me than a friend."

UGH!

I know there was a story about him being sick in the paper yesterday and how he is just lying on bed and all that. I just had this feeling that he was close to death yesterday because normally he would get excited after a Giants win and be into the game. That wasn't the game. He was lying stoically and just had no reaction as he just smiled. That's too bad. Still, he lived a great life. One of the best owners not only just the NFL, but in sports. He was what you call a "gentleman". Most owners are not like that in sports anymore. He was one of a kind indeed.

When you think of New York Giants football, you think of Wellington Mara first and then the others.
