Valentine's Marines win Japan Series

OSAKA, Japan (AP) - Bobby Valentine became the first foreign manager to win the Japan Series when his Chiba Lotte Marines completed a four-game sweep of the Hanshin Tigers with a 3-2 victory Wednesday.

South Korean Lee Seung-yeop drove in all three runs as the Marines won their first Japan Series title in 31 years.

``We started in spring training with a dream to be here for the last game,'' Valentine said. ``We wanted to win the last game and we did.''

Since Japanese baseball went to a two-league system in 1950, only six teams have swept the Japan Series.

Valentine, who took the New York Mets to the World Series in 2000 where they lost in five games to the New York Yankees, is in his second stint with the Marines. He guided the team to a second-place finish in 1995.

Lee hit a two-run homer in the second inning at Koshien Stadium to give the Marines a 2-0 lead, then had a run-scoring double in the third.

That is great!!!! I just saw this on local news. He was so happy!!!!!

He'll probably never come back to the U.S.

:(

They love him in Japan!!!

I miss him. I loved him managing the Mets, actually. :( I know some people didn't, but he was my introduction to really being obsessed by baseball. I'll always remember him hanging out on the dugout railing down in Atlanta during the post season in 1999. He was so animated, and into the game, and it captured me. Those games and Bobby V. himself were the reason I became a Mets (and a baseball) fan.

It's a shame that no MLB team want anything to do with him considering most GMs feel that he would undermine them. With that said, Tommy Lasorda loves him so you would figure that Lasorda's clout with the new owner could bring V to LA. I could see him managing the Dodgers though.

While I thought Willie was a great choice, Mets should have hired V back.

I am not a huge fan of his personally, but he is a good manager.

You know. It's funny. Everyone loves Ozzie for his personality. Isn't Bobby Valentine the same thing? I just wonder why Valentine gets negative reviews while Ozzie gets positive reviews for the same personality.
