View Full Version : This Shootout is so stupid

I got a chance to watch the Wild play the Blue Jackets tonight. I actually got a free channel of NHL Center Ice on my cable system. With the Wild being on that channel, I decided to watch the game. I got to watch my first shootout and I thought it stunk. Just exactly what is the point of a shootout if there are not that many talented players which the NHL do not have. If you want a shootout, you need stars and that's where Nash and Marian would have helped. Also there should be a sudden death in shootout not give another team chance after chance. For instance, Todd White scored the first goal in the shootout tonight. It should have been over after Columbus player missed it. That's it. Why should Columbus get another chance after the last chance for Columbus to tie it up? This should have been over after White scored. This rule is so stupid and confusing. Personally, I think the game should go on till there is a winner. Shootout does not solve anything IMO. This shootout rule needs to go. Patrick Reusse talked about how the shootout rule would be silly. After watching this pathetic display, he is so right.

wrong, the shootout rule is good. It works in the minors, so why cant it work in the NHL? When i went to the Milwaukee Admirals, the shootouts were exciting. and whats so confusing about the rules? they seemed straightforward enough to me.

No, it's not good. Why should a team be penalized with a loss for a shootout. Last night, the Wild should have won as soon as Todd White scored last night in the shootout. Columbus should not have gotten another shot after the Wild scored. The fact Columbus got two chances to tie it up was pretty silly IMO. A shootout has to be sudden death immediately. Besides how many teams have great players to do well in shootouts. The Wild have no one. With Marian Gaborik out, they got no one. They drew freaking Flip Kuba and the great Randy Robtaille out there for the shootout. That ain't fair. The Wild looked overmatched last night in the shootout as I was telling Special K.

They don't; they get 1 point.

Yeah, but 1 point means nothing for me.
You need 2 points to win. I don't think you should reward a team a point just for a loss. There should never be a reward for a loss. Only in hockey, you see that.

Hey! Boston has lost 2 games in the shootouts that they should have won 100%, but those are the rules, we can't change. I think they should have put it temporarly and then decide wheater or not to keep it. Boston lost to the Freakin Maple Leafs in SO after outshooting them 53-30!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Then tonight they played a heck of a game and lost in SO! It kind of sucks to lose in shootouts, but it's supposed to make the game better. Anyone can agree that it does suck to lose in shootouts.

Blue and Ray: If I had my way, there would not be shootouts. Teams would keep playing till someone scores.

And if teams have to play an entire period to decide the winner, both teams are dead tired for potential games the next day.

Well that's just the way it goes, Royce. How come baseball players can go play three days in a row while hockey players can't even if baseball goes way into OT.

Apparently, Jacques feel the same way I feel on lockouts.

Let's see, you're not spriting around ice on skates for up to 20 minutes a game, plus the OT you want in baseball. Baseball games are really only tiring to pitchers and catchers. What, you sprint to first base 3 or 4 times a game and make like 5 defensive plays? It's 10 windsprints.

which is why catchers rarely catch the day after an extended extra inning game. and its not a physically exhausting game unlike basketball, football or hockey.

I am with you......
How many people would turn off the TV after the 2nd OT in a season game? Playoff games is diffenent but a season game fans turn off the TV and leave the game. Shootouts are exciting and people like to watch it.

hmmm. Perhaps all the CHECKING that goes on in a hockey game and the fact that you have to exert energy the whole time you are on the ice, unlike baseball where you get to stand around for most of the game. I haven't been priveledged to play a hockey game but I imagine football is as comparable as it gets and I know that if you just got done playing an OT game and have to play against some fresh team two days away you are gonna get smashed, have more chances to get hurt, and play underpar in general. But I guess these guys are professional and not human...
Plus, they always say the penalty shot is the most exciting thing to watch, look at the shutout as seeing multiple ones all at once. Its like having your cake, and eating it too!

I have never understood this phrase. I mean, everyone who has a cake eats it. What is the point in having a cake if you're not gonna eat it?

Indeed. I was thinking the same thing while posting it but I could not stop thinking about Cartman in that South Park episode where he goes back in time to see the Declaration of Independence being ratified. He says it in that episode. :D So yea, I guess thats why I used it.

There's always Marie Antoinette's "Let them eat cake," but then again, that's also irrelevant to the subject. :)

back on the subject of the shootout, while it doesn't bother me that much I would rather have seen the NHL implement a power-play overtime. Each team gets two minutes to try to score on the power-play. It would be played exactly as a normal power-play would. Penalties, short-handed goals, etc. Could have been cool.

PP I have found your answer..... Here it is......
This is from John Heywood's Proverbs published in 1546. The original text is:
"Would ye both eat your cake and have your cake?" This is commonly misquotes as "You can't have you're cake and eat it, too.

That is awesome! :D Actual factual historical proof of why you would have a cake, and not eat it.

I give you style points for digging that up, nevertheless, who the hell wants to have a cake if not for the purpose of eating the goddamn thing? :notme:
