Shaunessey wrote a story Saturday trashing Theo by way of Lucchino. The guys on the news right now are saying Shaunessey is gonna get reemed. He may seriously have to leave town. Theo's sources say he quit because of this smear campaign.

GM Theo Epstein Walks Away From Red Sox
By JIMMY GOLEN, AP Sports Writer
BOSTON - At 31, boy wonder Theo Epstein was ready to step out on his own. The Red Sox general manager walked away from his hometown team on Monday, stunning Boston and the baseball world just one year after helping the franchise win its first World Series championship since 1918.
"I gave my entire heart and soul to the organization," Epstein said in a statement. "During the process leading up to today's decision, I came to the conclusion that I can no longer do so. In the end, my choice is the right one not only for me but for the Red Sox."
Epstein will continue working for a few days to assist in the transition and prepare for the offseason. The Boston Herald, which first reported the news on its Web site, said the Yale graduate has told associates that he might leave baseball, or at least take a year off.
The Dodgers, Phillies and Devil Rays have GM openings, but none has a $120 million payroll to match the one Epstein was given in Boston.
Once the youngest GM in baseball history and still the youngest to assemble a World Series champion, Epstein was reportedly offered about $1.5 million a year for a three-year extension. That was quadruple his previous salary but still short of the $2.5 million the Red Sox offered Oakland's Billy Beane in 2002 before hiring Epstein.
But even after the money was settled, the negotiations turned into a fierce and Freudian standoff between the boy GM and the mentor who nurtured him from an intern to a World Series champion. By leaving, Epstein breaks a longtime link with Red Sox president Larry Lucchino, who hired him as a Baltimore Orioles intern and brought him to San Diego and then Boston.
The Herald said Epstein went through "agonizing soul-searching" over office politics and his relationship with his boss. Published reports that contained inside information about their relationship, "slanted too much in Lucchino's favor," helped convince Epstein there had been a breach of trust, the Herald said.
Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling told The Associated Press he was disappointed in the news but had seen indications that it might be coming.
"You don't get better losing a guy like Theo," said Schilling, who joined the Red Sox after Epstein ate Thanksgiving dinner with him and convinced him to accept a trade from the Arizona Diamondbacks.
"It's obviously going to be an incredibly unpopular decision with the players. But we'll show up in spring training and get ready for the season and try to win another World Series. It's not like we're going to have a sit-down."
A lifelong Red Sox fan who grew up in nearby Brookline, Epstein came to Boston when Lucchino made him the assistant GM. Epstein was promoted to his dream job in 2002, about five weeks before his 29th birthday.
"Growing up in the shadow of Fenway Park, I never dreamed of having the chance to work for my hometown team during such an historic period," Epstein said, thanking owners John Henry and Tom Werner — and Lucchino — for the opportunity.
"My affection for the Red Sox did not begin four years ago when I started working here, and it does not end today," he said. "My passion for and dedication to the game of baseball remain strong. Although I have no immediate plans, I will embrace this change in my life and look forward with excitement to the future."
A devotee of statistical analysis who values his scouts as well, Epstein's tenure has been marked by bold adventures that often conflicted with baseball orthodoxy:
_He signed first baseman Kevin Millar, despite an unspoken agreement not to poach from Japanese clubs.
_He went without a traditional closer in his first year, with horrendous results.
_He tried to trade for 2003 AL MVP Alex Rodriguez — a deal that would have meant shipping out Manny Ramirez and Nomar Garciaparra — and then, without remorse, pulled the plug when the deal became too expensive.
_He ate Thanksgiving dinner with Schilling in a college football-style recruiting trip that lured the right-handed ace to Boston.
_He traded Garciaparra, the face of the franchise, for the parts he needed to complete the World Series puzzle.
But the efforts paid off.
The Red Sox reached the AL championship series in 2003 before the lack of a closer doomed Grady Little in Game 7 at Yankee Stadium. The next year, with a new manager and the closer it had been missing, the ballclub won its first World Series in 86 years.
Boston reached the postseason for a third consecutive year this season before getting swept by the Chicago White Sox in the first round

he may have been a moron, but this looks real bad. like worse than steinbrenner bad. When an organization sets up a hatchet man (Shaunessy) to tear down your GM (or manager or some such) that is very bad. Any prospective employee is going to wonder if the same thing will happen to them. Not to mention have Larry stick his fat little fingers in every pie crust. What GM wants that? the only time a president should get involved is if it requires him to approve going over the budget. Otherwise, he should worry about other things and let his GM put together the team.

Ray, I was just pointing out that people who once called Theo a moron are now bemoaning the fact that he's gone. It just struck me as funny, that's all.
In all seriousness, this is bad. Very bad. But it does show that it's really not all about money for Theo. He didn't like the situation and he's leaving. He's impressing me as a person even more.
But for Brian Cashman, he spends the season letting everyone know how upset he is, and then Steinbrenner waves a couple of million at him, and then Cashman runs back and kisses Steiny's ring. It's sickening.

In case anyone is interested, the probable next GM for the Red Sox is going to be Kevin Towers (GM of the Padres). Lucchino worked with him when with the Pads and KT is prolly the only one who could feel comfortable working with Lucchino. KT's own situation in San Diego is one that really is a figurehead as GM. I don't think that he wants to work that way.
KT is really good at getting "deals" done. He picks people up off the scrap heap and somehow they turn into someone helping the club. I can only imagine what he would do with a budget like the Sox have.
The ownership of the Sox and Lucchino I question in all this. My opinion is that Lucchino's ego couldn't handle Theo and his rock star status anymore. It's too bad this had to happen though for the organization. It's going to hurt unless they can get a GM replacement who can work well with Lucchino and win. Then Sox fans will forget about this incident.
Lucchino better hurry up and get someone signed quickly though, the winter meetings are coming up fast!

Well we also at some point have said Manny sucks, Damon sucks, Schilling sucks, Foulke sucks, right on down the line. Take it with a grain of salt.
Now that I think about it, I think the only player who we have not publicly scorned in David Ortiz. His time will come though. :)

No, I don't remember scorn, but I do remember a lot of "who the hell is David Ortiz?" posts. Didn't someone refer to him as "Jose" Ortiz?
At least there's no "Manny Ortez" on the team. ;)

What I was quoting was just wrote today in a paper. And it was quoted as a reason he left.
Why exactly should we care what Shaughnessy has to say?
Not to be rude, but I thought the dude is full of himself. He wrote that horrid book ''The Curse of the Bambino'', which I never believed for a second. Cashed in on the Red Sox fans' desperation and creating that silly ''Curse of the Bambino'' to get some money. I never thought much of him and I could careless what he has to say on the matter. He's just a writer that people pay attention for some reason. They guy bash Theo, then turn around and apologize. Jeez, this dude is trash.
Not trying to be rude, Cyberlibrarian. Just stating my views on Shaughnessy.
Lucchino's dictatorship chased Theo away. Theo putted up with Lucchino's dictatorship, but I guess he finally got sick of it and left. If the stories about Lucchino are true, then Theo had a good reason to leave. Pulling the trash Lucchino did is weak, especially on a GM that players like, which you don't see to often.
I thought Theo was a good GM. Made some questionable moves, but made some good moves. I never had any grip with any moves he made majority. I never thought he was stupid. A bit crazy for taking gambles, but that's not stupid. He just gamble, which could pay off in the end or come back and burn you in the face. Most of Theo's gambles paid off and led to 2004 WS victory.
Kevin Towers is more than welcome to come here and be Lucchino's puppet. I won't bother coming to Red Sox if Manny is trade. This team will be 70-85 wins at best without Manny. Depend on what happen with the team this offseason, if they don't deal Manny, then Towers should come and try to build a team. You don't get better by trading a Manny Rameriz. It's nearly impossible to replace his bat.
Anyway, I'm talking too much again. :duh:

Larry and George like smear people that don't do what they like. I'm shocked that Torre and Cashman have put up with that trash as long as they have. Theo only lasted three years of this smearing by Larry and limited control. Theo would be smear and have even less control if he was in NY.
