View Full Version : Josh Beckett

The Red Sox have joined the Rangers in the chase for Josh Beckett, ESPN's Peter Gammons reports.
According to Gammons, the Marlins are asking for Hanley Ramirez and either Jon Lester or Anibal Sanchez. They'd also want the Red Sox to take Lowell's contract, which might be a dealbreaker. Beckett for Ramirez and Sanchez would probably be worth doing for Boston. Beckett's a health risk, but he's still a better bet for the future than A.J. Burnett and he won't command all that much money in arbitration over the next two years.

Manny and Hanley Ramirez for Josh?

Beckett is always hurt, but when he's not he is one of the better pitchers in the league.

We need pitching badly. If it's not him, they'll go after Burnett, who would you rather have?

I'd do it in a heartbeat. Hanley has sucked so far. Who the hell knows how Sanchez will really be?

The loss of Theo is felt immediately. We're going to give up two TOP prospects to get a pitcher who will get the shit kicked out of him at Fenway.
Rumor has it we're going to give up Hanley Ramirez AND Jon Lester to get Beckett.
God this team blows.

I have still been hearing the Ryan Shealy for Kelly Shoppach trade going around some of the Rockies rumors also.

who's Ryan Shealy?

He is a 6'5" guy tipping the scales at 240. I would say about 5% body fat. I saw this kid his first year of pro ball here in Casper. He just didnt hit the ball he punished the ball. Bill saw him at the start of last year with the AAA Sky Sox (triple A team for Rockies) and he said that Ryan hit a ball so hard that it didnt have time to get up out of the park but he thought it was going to just go though the wall. Plays a good first base and did I tell you he can MASH.
He would be the first basemen for over half of the teams right now in MLB but he isnt for the Rockies because of some guy named Helton. They say he is trying to learn the outfield but he is a first basemen. Has a good glove for a big kid. And oh ya he can MASH.
But it will take a lot to get him. Shoppach and two of the top pitchers was in this deal this summer but that is the one the Red Sox took off the table.

Hanley is NOT a top prospect imo. He has done nothing in AA. I think Theo overpaid for :coffee because he thought Hanley sucked too. So, to give up him and Sanchez I would do. Who knows how "prospects" will end up? I would balk at Lester, he is a killer leftie.

Deal looks close. Sanchez and Hanley and a nobody for Beckett. If this goes thru, I'm freakin ecstatic. We get to keep Lester.

I will bet you PP that the Sox turn around and trade Lowell to the Twins for some of those great guys out of the pen on the Twins. Seems the Twins want Lowell something bad.

Thanx. I agree. Need Beckett to stay healthy.
Schilling, Beckett, Clement, Wakefield and Arroyo.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I like that rotation. It's a big time difference between last year rotation with Clement being the number 1, which should never happen again unless he decide to pitch good. I think it's safe to say that Fat Boy Wells is taking his giant ass else where.
Beckett's number were great last season and let's not forget he's complete owning of the Yankees during Game 6 of World Series.
http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/stats/mlb_individual_stats_player.jsp?playerID=277417&statType=2
You can check out his career stat there. I like them. He's far better than Pavano and Burnett ever were. He didn't have a fluke season last year. Even with injuries, he posted a pretty damn impressive numbers and be welcome here to Boston. I like this deal completely. :D
With the Red Sox offense helping him, he should posted big numbers for us. I'm sure he might miss a few starts, but I rather have him miss a few starts, then make no starts at in a Boston uniform.
Lowell, if he stay, can be a nice defensive 3B and could revive his bat in Boston with a friendly Green Monster there to help. Let us not under look the fact that he did win a Gold Glove this year. We'll see what happens with him, but he will help us met our 3B need and probably are 1B need, too, since I suspect Youkillis will be moving to 1B then.

Great trade for the Sox, assuming all pass their physicals and the deal is done.. But I think the Red Sox have agreed to take on all $18 million of the money owed to Lowell over the next two seasons...
I'm also interested to see how Lowell comes back this season... Before this last season he was a pretty good hitting 3B.. Love to see him return to form.. Also remember, even though he didnt hit well, he still won a GG last season.. So defensively he will help...

After reading about it and watching the news, I actually feel pretty good about this. I forgot about the 2003 Word Series (yeah, yeah). Obviously Beckett knows how to pitch in a tough spot. I also didn't realize he's 25 years old, so trading prospects for a proven young pitcher isn't so bad (I'm used to the Sox trading prospects for middle aged mediocre pitchers).
I am very glad we didn't have to give up on Jon Lester.

Has Lowell really been part of the steroid allegations? I was actually somewhat glad we got him....a right handed, power hitting third baseman at Fenway could put up good numbers, plus he's a gold glover. Maybe last year was just a bad seson?

he fell off the face of the earth in the second half of 2004 as well. plus had a pretty bad second half of 2003 (until the playoffs)

No, I just made that up. He's actually a pretty high character guy. I think he'll rake at Fenway, although I think we may spin him off somewhere else.

Hello all! Looks like it takes a little bit of positive movement in the Nation to awaken me from my annual winter slumber. Actually Ive just been real busy with work and grad-school, but I have been wanting to get back on here regularly.
As for the trade, I love it. It's brilliant. I'm not putting Beckett in the same sphere as Schill or Pedro, but he's damn good, a young (25!) arm, and he knows how to beat the Yankees. Yes he's been hurt, but more often than not it's been his finger. His FINGER. All his limbs are as they should be for a 25 year old phenom, and the prospect of having Beckett, Lester, Papelbon, and Craig Hansen on our pitching staff just makes me drool. And as much as we've heard about Hanley over the last few years, it obviously wasnt strong enough to get him regular time in the main event. There's a reason we signed Coffee for 4 years and theres a reason Hanley hasnt made it big yet. The biggest point of this deal is that we DIDNT give up Jon Lester. I'm not ready to say Josh Beckett is a Hall of Famer just yet, but based on his track record, getting him for Hanley and Anibal and a noname, with Lowell piggybacking the deal, is just gravy. You can't always be sure about prospects, but you can usually tell whether a World Series MVP is the real deal. Beckett fits the mold, and we got a steal.
As for Lowell, he had one bad year, which I don't attribute to Roid Withdrawl, and his right handed bat in Fenway might be just what the doctor ordered. Before last year he averaged like .273/24/95 or something like that. Oh, did I mention he's the reigning Gold Glove Winner? Looks like the left side of our infield could be shored up like Fort Knox. And we needed a 3B, so forget all the flipped-to-the-Twins ideas. A gold glove at third with Youk (or konerko??) at first sounds good to me.
furthermore, Sports Guy gives a great Top 10 as to why he ok's this deal on ESPN.com. And I have to say I basically agree with every one. This should change some of the doubters to believers.

They'll go out and sign Kenny Rogers. :laff:
The Yankees were a different team back then.
The main point about Beckett is that he was able to pitch against the New York Yankees in a pressure situation and beat them. No matter what the Yankee team was made up of, he was able to pitch in a huge game and still be the titan know as the Yankees. ;)
