SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- One of baseball's most fearsome offensive duos -- the Boston Red Sox's David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez -- appears to be history.
According to Ortiz, "Manny is not returning to Boston."
"Manny is living through a difficult situation [in Boston] that only he and his family know, and he no longer wants to play there," said Ortiz after arriving early Monday in the Dominican Republic.
Ramirez has asked for a trade in each of his five seasons with the Red Sox, but apparently this one is definite.
"I spoke with him last week before he left for Brazil and he told me that he wants to go to a team in the West," Ortiz, the Red Sox's designated hitter, said.
Ramirez has three years worth $160 million remaining on his contract with the Red Sox. Because of his status as a player with 10 seasons in the major leagues and five with the same team, he is allowed to approve any trade.
"I found out that that they are doing everything possible to trade him," Ortiz said.
The Los Angeles Angeles of Anaheim have been named as a possible destination for Ramirez, as well as the New York Mets.

Jeez, I don't want him to go, but it look like he's leaving. I'll wait until it happen, but I don't want him in Anaheim. He can be a threat to our team. He need to National League. I don't want to see him on the field against us unless it's a short interleague series or the World Series. I don't want any players the West team can offer. I don't want prospects. We're getting rid of three of our prospect to bring Beckett here. That would be a step in the wrong direction.
Manny should have thought about his contract more if he was going to pull this type of crap. Of course, it's just about making more money and bailing when you desire. I don't know, but that does seem a bit selfish.
I have to say this is quite weak enlight of the news of Beckett coming to Boston.

see that's the thing...whether it's true or not, it's such absolute bullshit! If there's one thing I hate about baseball players, and people in general, it's whiny, selfish dumbasses like Manny. It's like Eva said (by the way, that does sound kinda girly... :tongue: ), It's all about earning as much money, and bailing whenever you want to. There's no love for the game there, just money, and that really grinds my gears, to steal a family guy phrase.

I hate to play devil's advocate (quite literally) but I don't know what Manny's family or he is dealing with in Boston. It's fine to say he should have thought of that before, but I'm sure we've all taken jobs where we thought midway through, "what was I thinking?". I know I've done it and you better believe I looked to get out as soon as possible.
What I don't get is that David Wells is doing the same thing and you don't see Boston fans get on him nearly as much. Sure, Manny is more important to the Sox than Wells, but why isn't anyone questioning Wells' motives? I guess the point is that some places don't fit certain guys and sometimes a person's family can be miserable in a certain location too (and before you give me they can live somewhere else crap, just imagine if you and your spouse [and kids] worked in different parts of the country).
Listen, I don't know what is going on that is making Manny want to leave. Knowing Manny, he's probably responsible for a good portion of it, but I can appreciate where he is coming from. I've worked at jobs where I was absolutely miserable every day at work. Heck, I'm in one now and I'm just hoping for an assignment change or promotion next year. So, I realize Manny is putting the Sox in a bind, but I can see it from his point of view too.
Problem is, barzilla, do you sign a contract at the job you work at? I can understand Manny's point of view, but the problem is, he won't let us trade him where we desire. It will be absurd to trade him to Angels. Why in the world would we do that? We make the Angels the best team in AL and create a new power combo in Manny and Vlad. That's not just putting the Red Sox in a even weaker state offense wise, but making another contender far more better. While I can understand Manny's view, if he doesn't wait to finish up his contract, then he should just allow the Red Sox to get him out of the AL or ship him off to a non-contend team. I'm against the idea of shipping him to Angels and creating a fearsome duo in Vlad and Manny.

Manny still remain one of the elite player of MLB while Wells is just a number 3 pitcher these days and he's getting older. People don't really give a damn about Wells leaving, because our 5 starting pitchers seem all set. Now, if lose a person of Manny's level, our team instantly become much weaker offense wise and Ortiz lose his protection and he will suffer the Bonds' treatment. I don't see a way to pick up a bat to protect Ortiz, so we'll be in a huge bind in Manny leave Boston.
His depart would hurt the team as whole. While Wells can and is pretty much replaced with Schilling, Clement, Beckett; should be on the team, Wakefield and Arroyo being in the rotation and without a doubt, Papelbon knocking Arroyo's inconsitent ass out of the rotation sooner or later. We got six starters at this current time. Wells is expandable.
Honestly, Wells has only been here a year. I could careless he doesn't want to be here, because he didn't get another ring he was ranting about he wanted.
I'm a bit tired of these guys saying they have no privacy. Guess what, when you're getting paid the money you are, then it come with the job. You came to Boston, you should have known this was coming. Seriously, I can look at Theo and understand his position since he was bashed by management, but privacy not in Boston? I can't really over-look the fact that he was ignorant to privacy being was limited coming to Boston.
Of course, this could be yet another Manny episode, but as time goes along. Most people are saying he want out. Management and I really won't discredit this report either. This doesn't seem like the typical junk we get when he wanted to be traded. Ortiz defend him during the season, but Ortiz is saying he want out. Larry, even if he's a douche, said he want out. Not like they're trying to cover it up either.

See, that's my point. Are Boston fans mad at Manny because of what Manny is doing or are they mad because it puts them in a particular bind? I guess my point is that I have the right to leave my job after a year, but he doesn't have that right. I will agree on one point: if you want out that badly you cannot simultaneously hamstring your team by giving them an ludicrously small list.
However, I would point out that Ken Griffey Jr. did more to the Mariners when he named the specific team he wanted to go to. The Mariners ended up being a better team in spite of not getting market value. The point is not that you won't get value back. You won't, you might as well decide that now. The point is that you can do more with the money and get value that way. What happens if Boston can get some more pitching and then turn around and sign someone like Brian Giles for far less? You end up actually coming out ahead.

I have to keep returning to that caveat Jacqui. I can't judge Manny either way until I know what's going on. Right now, I'm hearing one side of the story. If that side ends up characterizing the situation right then I will concede the argument. Fan attention (however intense in Boston) is a part of the package. However, I also concede the possibility that more could be going on.
I guess the point is that some places don't fit certain guys and sometimes a person's family can be miserable in a certain location too.
I know my wife would be miserable in Boston. She's never been, but the cold temperatures and being away from family.....as for me, I tend to be a home body, so I would have no problem sitting home, watching television, and ordering in to avoid excess headaches if you guys pull the strings and get me to be the GM...... :banana:

Problem is, Griffey was leaving the league and could not threaten the Mariners, unless he was playing against them in World Series, which was doubtful since he was going to a bad organization at the time, that being the Reds. It's a bit different when a great slugger of Manny level want to stay in our league and go to a team with Vlad and create a powerful duo that should match his current pair with Ortiz and himself.
I do know that we will not get a thing off equal value for Manny. The one problem is, I don't want him threaten our chance in our league. He want to be in Anaheim, he can void his contract and get the hell out of Boston. If I was Boston management, I won't even consider a deal to make the Angels that much better.

I'm against the idea of trade him to any AL team. That's absurd. I'm against the idea of him going to Anaheim. People really need to look what happen if Manny and Vlad are together. Trust me, you won't see Vlas getting walked all that often if Manny there behide him, that's for sure.

I think these comments are smoke screens though. I really buy the mistress story. Apparantely, his mistress has been threatening his family. Again though, he made the freakin mess.
