BOSTON (AP) -- The Marlins and Red Sox completed the trade that sent ace Josh Beckett and third baseman Mike Lowell to Boston on Thursday night, but not before reliever Guillermo Mota was added to a deal that netted Florida four prospects.

The tentative agreement was reported and confirmed by baseball officials earlier in the week, but it wasn't finalized until Thanksgiving. The announcement included two previously unreported names: Mota is headed to Boston and minor league right-hander Harvey Garcia to the Marlins.

Florida also gets top shortstop prospect Hanley Ramirez along with pitchers Anibal Sanchez and Jesus Delgado. Hours earlier, the salary-slashing Marlins traded slugger Carlos Delgado and most of his $48 million contract to the New York Mets for first baseman Mike Jacobs and two minor leaguers.

It is the second time in three years that Boston has traded for a potential ace over Thanksgiving. In 2003, the Red Sox acquired Curt Schilling from the Arizona Diamondbacks and rode him to the World Series title the next year.

The 25-year-old Beckett is at the other end of his career. But persistent blister problems and late-season shoulder soreness have stalled his development.

The Red Sox are still looking for a general manager to replace Theo Epstein, but that didn't stop them from pulling off a deal that should give Schilling help at the top of the rotation. Lowell will replace Bill Mueller, who filed for free agency.

Boston officials did not respond to requests for comment. Florida general manager Larry Beinfest conceded that the Marlins were forced to purge payroll.

"This trade is difficult, but necessary because of the payroll market correction," he said. "Mike and Josh were key players on our 2003 World Series championship team, and they'll both be missed. We wish them all well in Boston."

The Marlins received permission from the commissioner's office to explore a move after the 2007 season because of the failure to get government support for a 38,000-seat stadium next to the Orange Bowl.

Beckett is eligible for salary arbitration and expected to make between $4 million and $5 million next season. He can become a free agent after the 2007 season. Lowell, 31, won a Gold Glove this year but his offense dropped off and he is owed $9 million each of the next two seasons.

Mota was 2-2 with a 4.70 ERA and two saves in 56 games in 2005.

The 21-year-old Ramirez, considered Boston's top prospect, hit .271 with six homers, 52 RBIs and 26 stolen bases at Double-A Portland last season before going 0-for-2 with the Red Sox during a September call-up.

Sanchez went 6-1 with a 2.40 ERA for Class-A Wilmington and 3-5 with a 3.45 ERA at Portland. Jesus Delgado was 7-3 with a 3.50 ERA at Class-A Greenville. Garcia, 21, went 3-5 with a 2.01 ERA and six saves at Class-A Greenville.

"Hanley Ramirez has a chance to be an All-Star caliber shortstop, and Anibal Sanchez joins our stable of outstanding, young starting pitchers," Beinfest said. "Jesus Delgado has a very bright future in our bullpen. Garcia pitched very well in Greenville last year and is another quality arm in our organization."

Anyone hear at all during these talks that Mota could be part of the deal? That comes as a big suprise to me... Had a bit of injuries the last 2 years but damn, if he can get back to his old self of 2003, that would be sweet! just another arm the way I look at it.. An added bonus:thumbsup:

Apparently, Mota was included in the deal at the last minute because the Red Sox threatened to back out of the trade because of Beckett's health issues. HAHAHAHAHA......damn, the Marlins got screwed. :D

Sweet, a front line pitcher in Beckett, plus some solid bullpen help.

Theo who?

this makes the deal better.

but you know both pitcher's arms are going to blow out this year and lowell will bat under .200 with like 5 homers.

its your luck the past year!

If Beckett does prove to be bust, then we got screwed. Let's hope that does not happen.

I like Beckett with that Red Sox cap.

Lowell is at Fenway. I will be shocked if he does bat below 200. Also, Lowell does have a back-up with Youkillis. Youkillis will be see time at 1B and 3B this season. Just hope the Red Sox at least keep Kevin Youkillis up in Major this time around, so he can get comfortable. He's been shipped back and forth from the Major League to Minor League.

Mota is coming off a horrid year. Was going to be the Marlins closer last year, I believe, until Todd Jones revived his career and took the job from him. He's a nice gamble and give us an hand in the bullpen, who might be good. It's a gamble we can take.

I like the inclusion of Mota in the deal. I think he's one of those guys that isn't wired to be a closer, but if Keith Foulke can return to health he won't have to be. His track record is of a guy that can throw 80-100 innings in relief. That is certainly an added bonus.

I don't know, Mota did suck terribly last year. I say it's 50/50 that he does good.

He may have sucked last year, but he is still better than anyone else the Sox have in the bullpen, other than Mike Timlin and Jon Papelbon. Come to think of it, he's better than everyone in the Yankee bullpen too, other than Rivera and Gordon. :)

Yeah, I'm just saying he might be inconsistent or just consistently bad. Going into last years season he was supposed to be one of the better closers, fantasy wise. And yeah, both our bullpens suck so it's a low risk high reward situation.

Lets hope Beckett can finally pitch 200+ innings.

He's a Giants fan as far as I knew.....

Also Mota did suck last year but he was hurt... So I attribute the injury to a crappy season...

Datch wins, I'm both.

Okay here's the story. My dad is a HUGE Giants fan, and my brother was a HUGE Marino fan which made him a HUGE Dolphins fan. I guess I wanted to be like my brother so I initially was a Dolphins fan. Soon, I really enjoyed football so I'd watch every game I could, usually the Giants with my dad. So watching them week after week I became a Giants fan, still being a Dolphins fan. It's more conveniant to be a Giants fan being I don't get the Dolphins on TV unless the play the Jets or are being nationally televised. So yeah, I'm both a NY Giants fan and a Miami Dolphins fan, but it's weird that this came up because the other day my friend asked me who'd I'd root for in the Super Bowl if they were to both be in it. I said the Dolphins. The situation where they play each other rarely comes up since they're each in different conferences. Some people would call me a front runner some years, but I'm not, otherwise I'd do it for every other sport. I've liked both teams for pretty much my whole life of being a football fan. I mean, I have 2 Giants jerseys (Manning and Dayne(don't ask)) and 3 Dolphins jerseys (an old Marino, a Ricky, and a Brown).

The Phins are the only out-of-state team I'm a fan of, otherwise everything else is NY for me.
