From John Perotto at the Beaver County Times--
"The Pirates reportedly have talked trade recently with Philadelphia about David Bell, who hit just .248 with 10 homers and 61 RBIs in 150 games last season.
The Pirates could also revisit trade talks with Texas about Hank Blalock, who hit .263 with 25 homers and 92 RBIs in 161 games, but the Rangers would have to come down from their asking price of left-hander Oliver Perez.
The Pirates may now look to acquire a right fielder and go with Sanchez at third base.
If the Pirates had been able to sign Mueller, they were considering going with a platoon of holdovers Craig Wilson and Jody Gerut in right field.
Though both hit just one home run during injury-plagued seasons in 2005, Wilson had a team-high 29 for the Pirates in 2004 and Gerut hit 22 as a rookie with Cleveland in 2003.
The Pirates seemingly have little interest in free-agent outfielders Jacque Jones and Preston Wilson, though they discussed Detroit's Craig Monroe and Texas' Kevin Mench in trade talks at the winter meetings last week in Dallas."
Gee, why spend the money for top tier guys like Blalock, Jones and Wilson when duds are available. I just don't get it. Mench is the only name that even comes close to being a plusss, depending on who they would give up.
