Astros sign Chavez, offer contracts to four others
Dec 20, 2005
HOUSTON (AP) - The Houston Astros and backup catcher Raul Chavez agreed to a $400,000, one-year contract on Tuesday, avoiding salary arbitration.
The Astros also offered contracts to All-Star third baseman Morgan Ensberg, closer Brad Lidge, shortstop Adam Everett and reliever Dan Wheeler. All four are eligible for salary arbitration and would have become free agents if Houston did not offer them contracts before the midnight EST deadline.
Chavez played in 37 games for Houston last season, hitting .172 with two home runs and six RBIs.
Ensberg batted .283 with 36 homers and 101 RBIs, setting team records for home runs and RBIs by a third baseman.
Everett stole 21 bases and hit .248 with 11 homers and 54 RBIs in 152 games.
Lidge, also an All-Star, was 4-4 with a 2.29 ERA and 42 saves. He struck out 103 batters and walked 23.
Wheeler had three saves in 71 games and was 2-3 with a 2.21 ERA.
