View Full Version : Kobe's 62 points is not that special

My god I thought NBATV's Rick Kamala was going to have an organsm when he was raving about Kobe's performance last night as he scored 62 points against the Mavericks, who decided to lay down for the Lakers last night instead of Sunday night against the Timberwolves. ESPNews and SportsCenter was apparently going nuts over his performance. Color me unimpressed. That's great that he got on a roll like that. He put on a great show. With that said, I came away disgusted. Let's see scoring 62 points yet NO ASSISTS. When I looked at the boxscore on NBATV last night, I notice the rest of his teammates scored a combined 50 points which every player scoring only single digits. That's disgusting. It's one thing to have the ball and score at will in a tight game as Lebron and Carmelo did couple of weeks ago when Lebrons scored 53 and when Carmelo scored 42, but it's another to score 62 points while the other team is getting blown out. Why not use this opportunity to get your teammates involved and start establishing an identity out there? Thankfully, Phil Jackson took Kobe out at the end. Still this was embrassing. I am not really crazy about anyone scoring that many points. I am more into balance scoring.
You can say I am nitpicking here and that I have a hatred for Kobe, but I am not crazy about anyone having that many shots and that many points while the rest of the team gets freezed out. Thank God KG does not have that mentality.

Well, he scored 62 points in 3 quarters, the Mavs had 61 after three. I don't think it is that big of a deal, but it's still a decent accomplishment.

It's good, but you know what. That means nothing. I am not that crazy about a player scoring that many points while everyone on the same team does nothing. That's my biggest gripe with Marbury when he was with the Nets. Granted, his teammates were horrible, but I wasn't crazy about him being the show.
It seems today's NBA is about one-on-five. People think just because Michael Jordan was scoring at will means that it's okay if the rest do the same. Jordan at least passed the ball to his open man while he was scoring that many points.
Mavs scored 61, but keep in mind the Lakers were leading by 20 points. The Lakers supporting cast has yet to bond or make strides. They have done better, but this was a great opportunity for guys like Odom and others to have some confidence and all.

Its incredible he was hot and he took care of it. He had rebounds and steals and his FG % was amazing. Im tired of the hatred when AI did it and stuff and Tmac everybody was on their knees....
Same when im sure Jordan did it they were drooling but when Kobe does it its not good enough...

No a big deal... what do you want the guy to do... slam dunk the ball jumping from midcourt? Unless you're are one of the best ever to play the game... I'd say it's a pretty big deal.

What I want Kobe to do is start passing the ball and start trusting his teammates and stop hoisting stupid shots as he customarily does. I come from the school of John Wooden. Wooden wants everyone to share the ball and run a functional offense. One of the thing that Wooden hates about basketball is that it has become one-on-five rather than five-on-five. It's not just Kobe. It's everyone in this league. This crap has gone on since the late nineties and it has gotten old. Whatever happen to passing the ball. The only time you really become a ballhog is in the fourth quarter when you become hot. Other than that, I prefer to run an offense that requires passing the ball and run. There is a reason why the Kings, Nets, and the Suns were fun teams to watch over the years. They play basketball the right way through passing the ball.
Jordan at least had the dignity to pass the ball hence why people laid off on him.

I think anyone could have scored 62 points with 25 freethrows. Yay for NBA refs brownosing 'basketball superstars'. Heh.....they probably just want to keep their job.
But anyways......that's not playing basketball. That's playing 'NBA Basketball'. Definition: kiss the superstars asses, and screw the others.

Oh keep in mind 25 freethrows were awarded to him in only 3 quarters. That's bullspit.

of course it means nothing in the grand scheme of things. its a regular season game. It doesnt mean its unimpressive. It is. Anytime you score 30 points in a quarter, you are doing pretty well.
still, its more an indictment on Dallas than anything else.

So Kobe had 8 assists today...
And Tim the thing with Kove is he was hot and went for it... He had 3 STEALS too thats very good...
Also the crowd was screaming "Kobe Kobe Kobe" in the 4th quarter and Phil asked Kobe if he wanted to go in Kobe sai d " Ill do whatever you need me to do...
I do think it was a big deal. Cmon, in 3 quarters! I think it was great decision for him to sit, very good no good could come from him playing. He got to the line 25 times! so you can sorta blame Dallas for allowing him to get so hot

he scored 62 on only 31 shots which is amazing for a guard on only had 2 TO's. C'mon, pretent he played in the 4th and scored 80, then it would be unbeleviable.

Kobe is a great player... But he certainly is not a great "team" player..
For the record, IMO, 62 in 3 quarters is pretty freakin impressive... Its not like he shot 40% in that game either.. He shot almost 60% overall and 40% on 3's....

'He got to the line 25 times! so you can sorta blame Dallas for allowing him to get so hot'
You got 3 major sports lets say. NFL, NBA, MLB. Of those 3 the NBA has the worst officiating, and lack of integrity. They make calls just to keep a game close, or THEY MAKE CALLS SO THAT A CELEBRITY CAN SCORE 62 POINTS IN 3 QUARTERS. They even did it for Jordan when he got older.
The NBA is just as fake as professional wrestling. What they should do is convert some NFL Refs to officiate some NBA games for like maybe 1 month. Then you would see the truth to it all.
If I was a GM for an NBA team I'd send all my players to hollywood to play in the movies. The next season they'd all be averaging 15 freethrows a game.

That has been his mentality since he was in high school at Lower Merion. Nice to see that mentality has never changed.

Lakers been playing a lot better. They actually have been doing better really. Didn't they win like 12 of the last 14 or something? Give all the credit to Phil Jackson though.
Oh and yea I got to admit that Kobe's 62 point outburst in 3 quarters was an unbelievable feat. With all the ballhog scorers today there hasn't been anything like that in like 40-50 years. But you still have to admit that every game he has like that, the next 4 games he averages 30% fieldgoal shooting, 15 freethrows per game, and 26ppg. That kindof ruins the illusion for me.

Lakers are now 15-14 after blowing a big lead to the Grizz. Kobe the ballhog as usual did not get his teammates involved in the offense which is why the Lakers lost.
I think Phil has done a great job with this team IMO. I don't think this team has any talent in that roster, but he has done a great job creating an offense that would help the role players. I think Phil proved to me that he is a good coach with what he is working with this year. He should be the Coach of the Year IMO.

Yea. Here's the link to that game: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2005/basketball/nba/12/29/grizzlies.lakers.ap/index.html
Wow 13-37. I wonder how the lakers lost? Could it have been the guy that missed 25 shots just so he could score over 40 points, and try to beat Iverson in the scoring title race?
He ever gonna learn? I'd like to think he's at least a little bit smarter then Iverson.

I think AI is trying a lot harder to pass the ball than Kobe.
Dward00
12-29-2005, 08:21 PM
Yea AI passes, but if you were a team trying to defend the sixers how hard would it be? You know where the ball is going to be 80% of the time. I'm not so sure that him putting up 7-8 assists per game is such a good thing either. Somebody else should probably handle the ball if he's going to be taking 70% of his teams shots.
