SAN FRANCISCO -- Barry Bonds homered in his 2002 debut at Pacific Bell Park, but the A's had more firepower in the first game of the Bay Bridge exhibition series, taking an 8-1 victory Thursday night.
Jeremy Giambi's three-run homer just inside the right-field foul pole was the big blow in a five-run fifth inning off Giants starter Kirk Rueter (1-2). A's starter Tim Hudson drove in the first two runs with a bases-loaded single that floated over shortstop Rich Aurilia's head.
Bonds brought the home crowd to its feet when he was introduced in the first inning, and he did it again when he sent a 1-0 offering form Hudson over the brick wall in right-center field to give the Giants the first lead of the game. It was his first homer at Pacific Bell Park since he hit No. 73 last Oct. 7.
But Hudson (1-0) didn't allow much else, giving up just the one earned run on three hits while striking out four and walking none.
