Marv back at MSG
to call game on YES

Old Knicks never die. They just come back in a different uniform.

Over the years Patrick Ewing, Charles Oakley and John Starks all returned to Madison Square Garden as friendly enemies, so maybe it was inevitable that Marv Albert would one day come back as something other than "the voice of the Knicks."

Albert, the legendary broadcaster, returns to the Garden tonight for the first time as the play-by-play man of the Nets. Albert, who parted ways with MSG Network before last season, had been associated with the Knicks since 1965, when he first filled in for Marty Glickman.

"It will always be a special place," Albert said. "I'm looking forward to it."

The broadcast team for the YES Network has a distinct Brooklyn/Knicks feel to it. Albert's rookie partner, Mark Jackson, played seven seasons with the Knicks, first joining the team in 1988 as a first-round pick and later returning following a trade in 2001. Ratings for Nets games on YES are up 50% from last year.

Albert's replacement with the Knicks, Mike Breen, also is regarded as one of the league's top play-by-play men. And Breen even has a famous ex-Knicks point guard as his partner: Walt Frazier.

"We've already told Mark, 'no helicopters' in front of the broadcast table," Albert joked, alluding to Jackson's infamous celebration dance. "We're a little worried about Mark."
