Jimmy Rollins added to Winter Tour lineup
Harry Kalas to emcee fundraiser which includes guest speakers Ryan Howard, Pat Gillick, Charlie Manuel, Aaron Rowand and Flash Gordon

Reading, PA – All-Star shortstop Jimmy Rollins, who ended the 2005 season on a 36-game hitting streak, has been added to the list of speakers for the Philadelphia Phillies Winter Tour when it makes its annual stop in Reading on Wednesday, January 25, 2006 at the Sheraton Reading. The Winter Tour will be a banquet with dinner and speakers for the first time since 1996 and also serve as the fourth annual King of Baseballtown fundraiser.

Phillies Hall of Fame broadcaster Harry Kalas will serve as master of ceremonies that also includes National League Rookie of the Year and Reading Home Run King Ryan Howard, newly acquired center fielder Aaron Rowand, new closer Tom “Flash” Gordon, Vice President and General Manager Pat Gillick and field manager Charlie Manuel.* Steve Noworyta, Director of Minor League Operations, will also be on hand to shed some light on some of the players that may call Reading home in 2006. The Phillie Phanatic and Reading’s mascot team will also be part of the entertainment. Dinner is scheduled for 6:30 PM. Cocktail hour, raffles, prizes, a silent auction, highlight videos, a Q & A session and an a 30-minute autograph session fill out the evening’s roster.

Tickets for the banquet are $50 each and are available online at readingphillies.com or at FirstEnergy Stadium and by phone (M-F, 8:30AM-4:30PM). Proceeds will benefit the Reading Phillies Baseballtown Charities, a 501C3 non-profit organization dedicated to helping more children play baseball (complete registration and financial information of Baseballtown Charities can be obtained from the Pennsylvania Department of State at 1-800-732-0999).

“The Reading Phillies and Baseballtown Charities appreciate the Philadelphia Phillies’ generosity in allowing their Winter Tour to serve as a fundraiser and help us honor one of our hometown legends,” said Reading Phillies General Manager Chuck Domino, who is also the President of Baseballtown Charities. “The Phillies are a class act and have supported our Baseballtown programs since Day One. We’re proud to be their affiliate of 40 seasons and look forward to seeing this tremendous lineup at the Winter Tour.”*

Local fast-pitch softball manager Rocky Santilli, owner of 2,000+ career wins, will be crowned the 2006 King of Baseballtown. Santilli becomes the fourth King of Baseballtown. He follows Reading native and long-time Boston Red Sox legend “Broadway” Charlie Wagner (2003), former Reading Indian and long-time Reading High coach Paul “Cooter” Jones (2004) and former Major Leaguer, front office executive and scout Dick Gernert, like Wagner, a Reading native.

The Reading Phillies trademarked the name Baseballtown in 2002 and began programs in its name with the goal to honor Reading’s rich baseball history and secure its baseball future by giving more kids the opportunity to play. Baseballtown Charities has helped sustain the Reading and Berks County based Olivet Boys and Girls Club RBI (Revitalizing Baseball in the Inner City) baseball and softball leagues since inception. Funds have been raised through the King of Baseballtown banquet, auctions, merchandise sales, amateur baseball events and private donations.

In the spring of 2006 Baseballtown Charities will celebrate the realization of a dream that accomplishes both goals of Baseballtown – the grand opening of Gordon Hoodak Stadium at Lauer’s Park in the City of Reading. The new $850,000 youth ballpark sits on the grounds of Lauer’s Park Elementary School, which was named for the former stadium that housed several professional teams and hosted barnstorming tours from 1907-1941. Babe Ruth and Shoeless Joe Jackson both played at Lauer’s Park. Gordon Hoodak Stadium will be the home field of the Olivet Boys and Girls Club’s RBI leagues. Gordon Hoodak is the current and long-time principal of Lauer’s Park Elementary School in the Reading School District.
