OAKLAND, Calif. - The Oakland Athletics will open the 2006 season on Monday, April 3 against the New York Yankees at McAfee Coliseum in the first game of a three-game series against the 26-time World Champions. The series also marks the only Coliseum visit by the Yankees during the 2006 campaign.
In addition, in order to create a more intimate and fan-friendly atmosphere at McAfee Coliseum, the A's have announced the club will no longer sell tickets in the third deck of the stadium, thus decreasing the listed capacity of the baseball configuration from 44,073 to 34,179. However, to accommodate fans, the A's will offer approximately 2,300 Plaza Level Outfield seats (Sections 200-203; 231-234), previously priced at $18, for just $14. In addition, the A's will make 3,009 Plaza Level Bleacher seats available every game for the cost of just $10. The effected seating areas-along with the upper level seating area in the football structure-will be covered with a tarpaulin to reflect the team's rich history and take advantage of marketing opportunities.
"As we continue our efforts to secure a new ballpark in Oakland, we will take every measure to make the Coliseum a comfortable and fan-friendly facility," said A's team President Michael Crowley. "Our goal is to create a more intimate ballpark atmosphere and bring our seating capacity in line to what we have proposed for our new venue. Even though we've eliminated the seating in the third deck, we have created other seating options at the ballpark that we feel offer a better view at an affordable price."
In other notes from the 2006 schedule, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim will make their first of three trips to Oakland April 21-23 to close out the A's first extended homestand of the season, a nine-game stand that features the Texas Rangers (Apr. 14-16) and Detroit Tigers (Apr. 18-20). The Angels other visits to the Coliseum are scheduled for July 6-9 and September 22-24.
The Boston Red Sox will make two stops in Oakland during the 2006 campaign (July 24-26; August 28-30) while the World Champion Chicago White Sox will make their only visit to Oakland, August 15-17, for a three-game series.
The first of two interleague series with the San Francisco Giants will take place at McAfee Coliseum on May 19-21, with the return set slated for June 23-25 in San Francisco. The A's 18-game interleague schedule also includes 12 other games against teams from the National League West Division. In addition to the games with the Giants, Oakland will play host to the Los Angeles Dodgers (June 16-18) and Arizona Diamondbacks (June 30-July 2), with road stops in Colorado (June 19-21) and San Diego (June 27-29).
The A's will log approximately 45,000 air miles during the 2006 campaign. In addition to making three intradivision trips to Los Angeles, Seattle and Texas, the A's will make two trips to New York (May 12-14; June 9-11), Toronto (May 9-11; Aug. 21-23), Minnesota (Apr. 11-13; Sept. 11-13) and Kansas City (Apr. 28-30; Aug. 18-20) for three-game sets and one visit to every other American League city, including Boston (July 13-16) for a four-game series immediately after the All-Star Break.
The A's 81-game home schedule features numerous attractive promotional dates, including four bobblehead giveaway days, four post-game firework shows along with the return of the popular "Double Play Wednesday," where fans have the opportunity to purchase $2 tickets and $1 hot dogs in the Plaza Level Outfield and Plaza Level Bleacher sections.
Season ticket packages starting as low as $126, are currently available by calling 510-638-GOA's.
