Phillies agree to terms with Franklin

Jan 05, 2006

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies made a move to bolster their starting rotation, agreeing to terms with right-handed pitcher Ryan Franklin on Thursday, pending a physical.

Franklin, who was suspended 10 days after testing positive for a steroid, went 8-15 with a 5.10 ERA in 190 2-3 innings with Seattle last season.

The 32-year-old Franklin became a free agent when the Mariners declined to offer him a contract by the Dec. 20 deadline.

He'll join a rotation that already includes Brett Myers, Jon Lieber and Cory Lidle. The Phillies have considered moving reliever Ryan Madson to the rotation, and former All-Star Randy Wolf is out at least until late July while recovering from elbow ligament replacement surgery.

Franklin was suspended Aug. 2-11 for violating baseball's steroids policy. Franklin said he has no idea how he tested positive, though he said he did say that he took supplements he bought at a nutrition store.

While Franklin has won at least 10 games only once, he was durable for the Mariners, making 94 starts with six complete games over the last three seasons. He also pitched over 200 innings in 2003 and 2004.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Franklin pitched for the gold-medal winning U.S. team at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, going 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA in four appearances.

Bolster?:laff:

I guess the going rate for a pitcher that lost 15 games the year before and has a career 35-50 record is 2.6 million:nono:

You gotta love it;)

Check out this little piece from another article on Franklin:

Franklin had some of the worst run support of any starting pitcher last year, when he went 8-15 with a 5.10 ERA in 190 2-3 innings with the Mariners. They averaged only 3.4 runs per game for him, the second-lowest amount in the American League and tied for fifth-lowest in baseball.

And Franlins quote about that:

"I didn't get much run support, but I'll take the blame before I put it on my hitters any day," he said.

lol.. I just cracked up when I saw he said that... Wow, Ryan, thats mighty big of you not to blame the hitters and the low run support for that awful record... Of course it had nothing to do with your stellar 5.10 era... Geez, they would have had to average over 5 runs a game for you for you to have close to a .500 record:hmm:
