congrats to Lovie. He got 24 1/2 votes, narrowly beating out Tony Dungy who got 20 1/2 votes.

Congrats!!!

Well, people have said this argument before, but the Bengals were good last year already...well, they went 8-8 right? so it wasn't such an improvement.

the bears went from winning 5 games I believe to going to the playoffs! that's impressive.

Exactly Datch. These were the same experts that had the Bears going anywhere from 3-13 to 6-10.(Are you listening Dr. Z? )

But I will say this.Suppose the Bears did have a bad year, then Marvin Lewis may have had a ton of votes, maybe even win Coach of the Year.

Just saying I'd wish they voted on coach skill instead of just saying hey that team that won 10 more games this year then they did last year should have the coach of the year. There's one of those every year, and their coach gets the nod, and then they go 2-14 the next year.

but it's coach of the year, not coach who is the most skilled...the two are different. I mean, a lot of people see Bill Parcells as one of the best coaches in the league, right? or what about Bill Belichick? Those two are amazing coaches. But they didn't win the award, because Lovie Smith was the coach of the year, leading his team's turn around.

that's what coach of the year is about

why? i'm surprised you didn't vote for bledsoe as coach for the year since you seem so incredibly out of touch...

The expectations for the Bears this year were incredibly low, and they had a few injuries to contend with. The fact that they won as many games as they did with a rookie QB is impressive in itself. Lovie did a great job this season and his team shows it.

True, but maybe they should. Also Bill Belichick is miles ahead of any other coach in the league. Heck light years even. And this is coming from a guy who's hated the patriots since they won their first championship.

bengals havent been to the playoffs since what 1990? bears went to the playoffs few years ago when they had jim miller as qb

what marvin has done is more impressive

The Bengals were 8-8 in Lewis' first 2 seasons at Cincinnati. This year, they were expected to contend.

Last year, the Bears were 5-11,and most of the experts picked them to have a very similar record if they were lucky.

Now,granted Lewis was 11-5 this year, for a team that hasn't made the playoffs in 15 years. But the Bears had a bigger turnaround than the Bengals with way less talent. This should in no way diminish what Marvin Lewis has accomplished this year.

You also have to factor in Tony Dungy.Supoose the Colts didn't start 13-0,would he have had as many votes? We will never know. His team was expected to be a Super Bowl contender this year.

so? they were expected to have at least ten wins. the bengals basically performed to expectations. they were one of the trendy super bowl picks (those who didnt pick Indy). so your comment holds absolutely zero water.

Difference is Lovie Smith has no staying power.

Guy gets the Coach of the Year award in his rookie season, and fired either the next year, or the 3rd year.

I think it's poor choice to give him CoY honors when nobody is even sure that he's the reason the bears are doing good yet.

But yes.......Tony Dungy probably deserved it.

what does expectations have to do with it actually being done?

It would not be so gratifying to see Lovie win it if he did not have to start a rookie QB most of the year. The Bengals had Palmer all year.

Those other coaches did great job as well, but Lovie deserved it more than any other.

if you arent smart enough to understand it, I'm certainly not going to be the one who tries to explain it to you.

Lovie was clearly coach of the year. Marvin and Tony did a great job, but it's clearly Lovies trophy.

I have a question...why was tony dungy in the running?

if marvin lewis is being held out because the bengals were supposed to win this many games whatever, everyone knew the colts were gonna win a butt load of games...and yet tony dungy came in 2nd?

how does that work?

Timberwolf
01-08-2006, 12:44 AM
Tony was in the running mainly because of the undefeated record more than anything.

I thought Marvin Lewis should have won the Coach of the Year, but I don't think you can argue with what Lovie has done. You can make a case for Jon Gruden, Joe Gibbs, Lewis, Lovie, and even Tom Coughlin. I trust the voters instinct on this one and they made the right choice.

I have a question...why was tony dungy in the running?

Because he won the first 14 games of the season. Good coaches do that.

My Coach of the Year votes goes like this:

1) Marvin Lewis
2) Lovie Smith
3) Tony Dungy
4) Joe Gibbs
5) Jon Gruden
6) Herman Edwards

herman edwards? his team went nowhere! how can you justify that?

Timberwolf
01-08-2006, 03:04 AM
No, the Jets didn't. However, his team played hard considering they lost everyone and they were close to the wire in all those games. That should count for something because this team was realy really bad. The fact Dick Vermeil lobbied for Herm as Coach of the Year has to say something, no?

If I had to critique Herm, I think he should have used Kliff Kingsbury as the QB. Bollinger really did not do much. Kingsbury has a great arm and a great vision.

I was more impressed with Herm's work than Mike Tice's work with the Vikings this season.

no. ;)

sorry, but aren't dick vermeil and herm great friends? I've rallied for my friends a lot of times, but it doesn't mean they deserve it :)

Herm Edwards is a good guy, he's a nice guy, and that's great. In fact, in the sports world of today, it makes me respect him even more, because there are so many assholes out there. I have nothing but respect for him.

But a coach of the year he is not.

a coach of the year would have made this team good. just my opinion though

I think he really deserves it. Most people were predicting the bears to finish last in there division.
