Report: Longhorns' Young to declare for draft
ESPN.com news services

Longhorns junior quarterback Vince Young will declare for the NFL draft at a 4 p.m. news conference Sunday, his godmother told The Dallas Morning News.

Mel Kiper's top six players
1. Reggie Bush, USC RB (Pending Bush entering draft)
2. Matt Leinart, USC QB
3. Vince Young, Texas QB
4. Mario Williams DE, NC State
5. D'Brickashaw Ferguson, OT, Virginia
6. A.J. Hawk, LB, Ohio State

Young and his mother, Felicia, met with Young's pastor, Samuel H. Smith, in Houston on Sunday before making the decision, Yolanda Lezine told The Morning News

According to Lezine, Young was on his way to Austin to tell Texas coach Mack Brown his decision to go pro.

"After that performance in the Rose Bowl, I think we all kind of knew which way he was going to go," Lezine told the newspaper.

Team and league sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen that the Texans will pass on Young, a Houston native, and select USC running back Reggie Bush with the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft, pending the formality of Bush announcing that he is turning pro.

Almost nothing will change that course, the sources told Mortensen.

The Texans will pick up an $8 million option on quarterback David Carr, who was the expansion team's first draft pick four years ago. Texans owner Bob McNair made the decision after getting extensive evaluations from various sources that strongly endorsed Carr, including a favorable report from Dan Reeves, the former longtime NFL coach hired last month as a consultant.

USC's Matt Leinart, who could have been the first pick a year ago had he turned pro after his junior season, still remains the consensus top quarterback in the NFL draft, even if Young comes out. For Leinart, he is likely to be the choice of the New Orleans Saints at No. 2 with Young projected to the Tennessee Titans at No. 3.

Steve McNair, who has been mentoring Young, including a visit to watch the Rose Bowl, will be lobbying the Titans to select Young with the third pick, Mortensen reported. Of course, McNair has to re-sign with the Titans for that to happen.

Leinart also would be desirable to Tennessee, where his former USC offensive coordinator Norm Chow is now calling plays for the Titans.

He will go fairly high in the draft but to where will be fun to watch.

I still would like to see his throwing motion when he lets it go deep down field.

I think he'll go anywhere from first to third...it's leinart, young, and Bush for the top three, hands down.

I wonder about his throwing motion, is he gonna have trouble with it in the NFL? it's rather unusual, and I've heard people talking about different throwing motions not working well in the NFL for some reason.

But damn that kid is a player

He's one of the few players who i think is ready to leave early for the draft.

I'm curious to see how he turns out as a pro. I guarantee no matter who gets him, they'll change his aproach to the game.

That is why I want to see him reach back. But if he has to reach back to throw the ball that will telegraph this throw and NFL teams pick up on that very quick.

there is almost zero chance he goes #1. Texas is going to be picking up the 8 million option on David Carr so they are committing to him. He goes #2 or #3. I'm leaning towards #3 since Leinart is your more prototypical NFL QB than Young is (plus Leinart has had 3 great years whereas young has only had one truly great year) which im sure New Orleans would want after their disastrous time with a mobile QB who was known for his legs.

I am with you Ray.

1. Texas takes Reggie
2. NO takes Leinart
3. Titans take VY and have him on the bench a year under McNair which I think is one great move.

I bit more to what Ray and I was saying....

Vince Young could be in the unique position of learning under mentor Steve McNair, the quarterback of the Tennessee Titans, formerly the Houston Oilers. McNair, who attended the Rose Bowl, has served as a tutor and mentor to Young for several years. Tennessee has the third pick, behind Houston and New Orleans.

I think Vince made a great decision. I think he is ready for the next step though I think he should be brought along the way Carson Palmer was brought along. Even if he left after his senior year, I would say the same thing.

Texans should draft him not Bush. I don't think Carr is a great QB. You won't see QBs like Vince around. I think Vince has that proveribal "it" to do very well. I would trade Carr and get some players for him.

Enough with the throwing motion stuff, folks. I thought he looked damn good in the Rose Bowl. Who cares how he throws as long as it's accurate and the fact a receiver catches the ball? I think Vince is much more polished than Michael Vick IMO.

I like Lineart, but Vince has the passing game and running game to do well. He can beat you in any ways. I could see the Saints drafting Young since New Orleans is right by Texas which would mean increased attendance. Plus there is a good chance the Saints might move to San Antonio down the road so the Saints could have a drawing card right off the chute.

Ya the numbers say he was ok in the Rose Bowl. Everyone is saying he must change his mechanics and I agree. His throws sidearm and his release point is under his shoulder. Pass's are going to get batted down at the line with the size of most of those guys and in the NFL they get to you quicker so you got to get the ball up more. Trouble there. Also you aint as accurate sidearm. Just one of those things. And you dont have the power for the long ball. There is quickness at the start of the pass.

How many sidearm QB's in the NFL? How many are good QB's. Right off the top of my head that was ok is Bernie Kosar and he was always getting pass's knocked down.

There is a huge upside to Young but just like Ray said the Saints will want to stay away from same kind of QB they just got rid of. And Young will be great studing a year under McNair.

This sounds awfully familiar to another quarterback who was already mentioned in this thread!
