How in the world have they still not voted in Bert Blyleven and Andre Dawson? I might be a Red Sox fan and love to see Jim Rice in the Hall, but those two are far more deserving than Rice and should have received more votes. For all these people that failed to get into the Hall this year, they might have lost their best chance getting into the Hall. I'm glad at least one player made, it would have been disappointing if no player was inducted into the Hall this year.

Kinda think Goose should have been in as well with Sutter but at least Sutter getting in should open the doors to other relievers....
1st pitcher in the HOF never to start a game in the majors...

maybe not in the case of Dawson. The class of 2008 is extremely weak, too. So Dawson is within Striking Range and has some seasons left to work with, unlike Goose and Bert and Jim who only have a couple left.
but yes, at least Sutter got in.

I think Panzram is secretly a voter for the HOF. Hence Weiss' one vote. :D

I never really saw any of these guys play, but shouldn't Lee Smith go into the Hall before any reliever on the ballot?

no. because Bruce Sutter was a better pitcher for his career than Lee Smith. should lee be in? perhaps, but Sutter and Gossage and Eck and Fingers and Wilhelm were all better pitchers than Smith. Gossage should be in before Smith.
I'm so disappointed. This was the last best chance for some of those players to get in the hall with the players coming on the ballot in the next few years.
It is so Disappointing that they can only vote in one player.

Actually I think the 2008 class is fairly weak but none of the close ones have a shot next year....
The HOF voting is so bogus its not even funny... I think there were 12 ballots returned blank and lets be serious here, Gregg Jefferies, Doug Jones, Walt Weiss, getting ANY votes is a total joke! Those were wasted votes!

Rice will get there eventually. You figure next year,Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken,Jr.will be a lock.Gossage,maybe.McGwire,maybe.
But realistcally,I see Rice going in in '08 along with Andre Dawson.

Why not let broadcasters get a vote? Who do you think Vin Scully would vote for? Or let players who after 5 years out of the game vote. Who would know better than them? But changes have to be made.

I totally agree that broadcasters should be allowed to vote along with current HOF'ers...
I also think that there is no question that Big Mac is a HOF'er on the 1st ballot... There shouldnt be any question over that...
I guess I'm just sitting here wondering today is that how Bruce Sutter's stats have gotten so much better over the last 12 years for him to get in this year as opposed to the 1st 12 he was eligible:notme: ;)

I hear ya James.
As for Big Mac I get so mad when I hear people say he used steroids. Do I think he did? Yes I do. But the key word being THINK. There is no proof. He would get my vote that is for sure....
I am with you also on how does one get better after not playing after 12 years.
I think it shows also how the writers overlook the mid-west guys. Small market guys. How is Burt Blyleven not in??? 4th in strike-outs. The next pitcher in strike-outs that isnt in the HoF is 16 on the list for total strike-outs. (that is assuming that Randy Johnson, Rocket, Greg Maddux, Pedro Martinez get in) 22 years of playing with bad teams he is 13 games away from 300 wins which is an automatic ticket to the HoF. This just shows what a joke the HoF voting is.

Congrats to Bruce Sutter for being in the Hall. Long time coming for sure. With that said, there should have been more than one especially in a off-year where guys like Bert Blyleven, Jim Rice, Goose Goosage, and Jack Morris should have made it to the Hall. It's very disgusting that those guys I mentioned are not there.
How does Bert Blyleven is not there is beyond me? This is a no-brainer. The guy was a big-time pitcher in the postseason. This guy was the reason why the Twins have championships. This guy was the ace. This guy was a presence in which you know the Twins were going to win when he was out there in the mound. This guy carried the Twins. So what if he did not win 300 games? He was close, wasn't he. All he did was WIN. If he was pitching for the Yankees or Red Sox, he would be in the Hall easily because the media would be promoting Bert like there was no tommorow which would influence the voters. The fact he pitches in Minnesota or the fact that he was short of winning 300 games should not cost him a Hall of Fame vote IMO. The same with Jack Morris.
How does Jim Rice does not get there is crazy? All Rice did was post great numbers and carry the Red Sox into wins with his performance. Just because he came off surly does not mean he should not be there.
Goose Gossage should have been there long time ago. That's even a bigger disgrace than Bert not being there. Goose Goosage really defined what a closer should be by pitching two or three innings to close a game. The guy was one of the big-time pitchers to wear a Yankee uniform. He did well under the bright lights of NY. How does he not be in the Hall?
The Hall of Fame has lost credibility to me IMO. It seems writers vote base on bias and based on who they like. That ain't right. Most writers seem to have some bitterness in them as they vote. Some of their explainations don't even make sense. I don't even bother watching the Hall as a result and quite frankly, I don't take it seriously either anymore especially with what has gone on lately. It's just a sham in my book.
Hall of Fame voting should go to the fans and broadcasters along with the writers.

I dont know if I would leave the voting up to fans though but I do think broadcasters as well as other HOF'ers should have a vote..
Check the mlb mock voting done by the fans:

Doesnt give me much hope for the thinking of general fans...

I have a problem with this "weak year", "off year" HOF discussion. If it's a weak crop, how many legit candidates do we really have? If this group can't get elected next year because Ripken and Gwynn are locks, then would it be safe to assume that the others not enshrined are a class below Cal and Tony?
If they are indeed a notch below, why should we expect them to be inducted in '08 or ever? Conversely, if Rice, Blyleven, Morris, Gossage and others are clearly HOFers then the crop this year can't be weak, can it?
Everyone has bias-writers, players, manager, broadcasters, fans. The method won't improve by including more in the process.

I have a proiblem with the argument that guys should get in because it is an off year. These guys are not competing against each other. They are competing against themselves. I would have honestly had zero problem at all with no one being elected this season, or any season, if the person does not believe to be there. It is ridiculous that there are some people in the HOF who are there just because someone needed to be elected for that season.
