The Oakland A's bats came out smoking in the 5th inning as they plated 7 runs in the inning.But it was not enough as they dropped thier 2006 Cactus League Opener to the Chicago Cubs 8-7 at Mesa,AZ this afternoon.
THE GOOD;All 7 A's runs came via the long ball,all off Cubs P Bryan Corey.Mark Ellis hit a grand slam,Bobby Crosby added a 2-run shot,and Bobby Kielty hit a solo blast.Kielty went 3-3 in the game.
Kirk Saarloos pitched a scoreless inning in relief.Closer Huston Street gave up a hit in a scoreless in the 7th.
THE BAD; A's starter Dan Haren gave up 5 runs on 7 hits in 1 2/3 innings.He walked 1 and struck out 1.
The A's committed 3 errors in the game,including 2 by SS Clifton Pennington.

Bobby Crosby homered for the 2nd straight game,but it was all the a's would get as they dropped a 5-1 decision to the Milwaukee Brewers in Phoenix this afternoon.
THE GOOD; All 6 hits by Oakland were for extra bases,including Crosby's solo homer in the 6th.Eric Chavez,Mark Ellis,Jay Payton,and Mark Kotsay each doubled.
RH reliever Mac Suzuki went 2 scoreless inning giving up 2 hits and striking out 2.
THE BAD; Starter Joe Blanton gave up all 5 Milwaukee runs in the 2nd inning.He gave up 5 consecutive hits in the frame.

The A's pounded out 14 hits,but a 3-run 9th inning rally fewll short as they dropped a 9-7 decision to the Milwaukee Brewers at Maryvale this afternoon.The A's drop to 0-3 on the spring.
THE GOOD; Mark Ellis,Mark Kotsay,Dan Johnson,and Mike Rouse each had 2 hits for the A's.Ellis scored twice and tripled in the game.
THE BAD; Errors led to big inning for Milwaukee in the game.In the 1st inning,an erroe by SS Mike Rouse led to 3 runs off Barry Zito.Rickie Weeks hit a 2-run blast off zito after the Rouse error.
In the 3rd inning,LF Bobby Kielty lost 2 fly balls in the sun in a 4-run 3rd for Milwaukee with Jay Witasick on the mound.

The A's picked up thier 1st Cactus league win of the season with a 13-1 pounding over the South Africa WBC squad in Phoenix.The A's pounded out 14 hits in the game.
THE GOOD; Bobby Crosby's two-run double in the third inning erased South Africa's 1-0 lead. Freddie Bynum had an infield single and a two-run triple; Andrew Beattie, Javier Herrera, Daric Barton and Matt Watson each had two hits; and Nick Swisher, who had three RBIs, hit a two-run homer in the sixth.
Starter Shane Komine gave up a run on one hit over two innings and was replaced by Dan Meyer, who worked two shutout innings.

Bobby Crosby continued his hit hitting as the A's defeated the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 8-5 in Phoenix this afternoon.The a's pounded out 13 hits in the win.
THE GOOD; Crosby was 2-2 with an RBI single to up his team RBI lead to 6 on the spring.He has hit in all 4 games thus far this spring.
Freddie Bynum went 2-2 including a 2-run homer in a 4-run 6th inning for the A's.
Starter Kirk Saarloos gave up a run on 4 hits in 3 innings of work.Reliever Joe Kennedy gave up a hit in 2 innings.
THE BAD; Reliever Jason Karnuth sufered a blown save as he gave up 3-run homer to Casey Kotchman in the Angels 6th to give them a 4-3 lead.Karnuth did eventually pick up the win.

In Phoenix this afternoon,the Chicago Cubs ran roughshod over the A's with a 12-3 win.
THE GOOD; Non-roster invitee Scott McClain clubbed a 2-run homer in the 7th inning,his 2nd blast of the spring.
THE BAD; Starter Dan Haren gave up 4 uns on 4 hits in 3 innings of work.

A's pitching was blowtorched for 5 home runs by the World Champion Chicago White Sox this afternoon,bu a late inning rally fell short as the a's dropped an 8-5 decision to the White Sox.
THE GOOD; Keith Ginter doubled home two runs, and Scott McClain singled home a run off Mark Buehrle in the fourth. Nick Swisher added two hits.
THE BAD; Chad Gaudin gave up one run in each of his three innings of work, including two home runs and Konerko's RBI double. Gaudin struck out three and walked one.

Eric Chavez beted his 1st homer of the spring,but it was not enough as the A's sropped a 10-3 game to the Texas Rangers this afternoon in Surprise,Arizona.
THE GOOD; Chavez' homer was a 2-run shot in the 7th inning.bobby Crosby collected 2 of the 3 A's hits in the game.
Joe Kennedy struck out the side in the fourth and worked 1 1/3 hitless innings.
THE BAD; Starter Joe Blanton allowed two runs on four hits, walked one and struck out three.
The A's committed 2 errors in the game.

The A's scored 5 times in the 1st and twice more in the 2nd as they criused to a 7-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers this afternoon at Phoenix.
THE GOOD;
Mark Kotsay hit his first home run of the spring, highlighting a five-run first inning.He was 2-2 in the game. Jay Payton had three hits, including a double.Eric Chavez was 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
THE NOT SO GOOD; Barry Zito gave up 2 runs on 4 hits in 3 innings of work.

The A's split-squad team used a 17-hit attack as they smoked the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 16-4 in Tempe Friday afternoon.
THE GOOD;Dan Johnson's three-run homer broke open a tie game. Scott McClain had four hits, including three doubles, and drove in two runs. Freddie Bynum added two doubles and drove in two runs.
Right-hander Kirk Saarloos gave up two runs on three hits and a walk in three innings. Saarloos struck out one. Jay Witasick got the win after striking out two during a hitless inning.

An A's split squad team got a homer from Jay Payton,but that wasn't enough as they dropped a 9-4 game to the Kansas City Royals in Surpise,Az. this afternoon.
THE GOOD; Payton hit his 1st spring homer in the 7th inning.
Rich Harden gave up a run on 2 hits in his 1st spring start of the season.
THE BAD; Left-hander Ron Flores surrendered five runs and didn't make it out of the seventh inning.

Danny Haren was solid in his outing,but the A's couldn't hold off the Angels in split-squad action as they dropped a 5-4 decision in Phoenix this afternoon.
THE GOOD; Haren allowed 2 runs,1 earned in 4 innings work.
Eric Chavez and John Baker each connected with solo homers in the game.Chavez had 2 RBIs.
THE BAD; Mac Suzuki allowed 2 runs,1 earned on 2 hits in the 8th inning for the loss.

Mark Ellis and Adam Melhuse each went seep as the A's took a 9-5 game against the Colorado Rockies in Tucson this afternoon.
THE GOOD; The A's scored 4 runs in the 1st inning,and never really looked back in this one.
Ellis and Melhuse both went 2-4 in the game.The A's also had two-hit days from Freddie Bynum, Nick Swisher and Dan Johnson.
Starter Chad Gaudin allowed three runs on four hits and a walk in three innings. Joe Kennedy pitched a pair of shutout innings against his former team, walking one and striking out one while holding the Rockies hitless.

The A's jumped out to an early 7-0 lead,only to fall behind in the 8th until Charles Thomas' 2-run single in the bottom of the 9th inning gave the A's a thrilling 9-8 win over the defending World Champion Chicago White Sox in Phoenix this afternoon.
THE GOOD;Eric chavez belted a 3-run homer as part of a 5-run 3rd inning. It was Chavvy's 3rd homer in the last 5 games.He currently has a 5-game hittting streak.
Dan Johnson and Mark Ellis had 2 hits apiece.
Joe Blanton threw 3 scoreless innings,giving up 3 hits and striking out 5.
THE BAD;Alex Santos gave up 5 runs in 1/3 of an inning in a 6-run Chicago uprising in which they took the lead.

The A's couldn't hold a late lead as the San Diego Padres scored 5 in the bottom of the 8th inning to pull out a 6-5 win over the A's in Peoria.Az. this afternoon.
THE GOOD; Shortstop Bobby Crosby and third baseman Eric Chavez hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the third to give the A's a 4-0 lead.
Crosby was 2-3 with a run scored and 3 RBIs in the game.Jay Payton was also 2-3 with a run scored.
Starter Barry Zito gave up a run on 3 hits in 4 innings work.The combination of relievers Kirk Saarloos, Justin Duchscherer and left-hander Randy Keisler kept the Padres hitless in the fourth through seven innings.
THE BAD; A's reliever Shane Komine gave up 5 runs in the Padres 8th inning on 5 hits,walking 1 and giving up 2 bombs.

The Oakland A's survived a wild 9th inning to defeat the host Milwaukee Brewers 10-9 in Phoenix this afternoon.
The A's had scored 5 runs in the top of the 9th before Milwaukee scored 4 of their own in the frame.
THE GOOD;John Baker had two hits, including a go-ahead two-run single in the ninth inning. Dan Johnson hit a two-run homer in the opening inning. Jason Kendall had two hits, including an RBI double. Jay Payton contributed an RBI single.
Starter Dan Haren worked 3 2/3 innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs. Haren fanned three and walked two. Joe Kennedy pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits.
THE BAD; 3 Oakland relievers combined to surrender 7 runs in the 8th and 9th innings.

Curtis Pride's RBI single in the 10th inning lifted the LA Angels to a 2-1 win over the A's in Phoenix this afternoon.
THE GOOD; Lefty Dan Meyer was impressive in his first start of the spring, throwing four shutout innings and allowing just two hits to Guerrero. He did not walk a batter and struck out two.
Mark Ellis had two hits and Marco Scutaro, in his first game with the A's this spring, singled in Oakland's lone run in the bottom of the eighth.
THE BAD; Randy Kiesler allowed 2 runs on 3 hits pitching the 9th and 10th innings.

Pitching was pretty much non-existent this afternoon as the Kansas City Royals pounded out 20 hits en route to a 17-7 pasting of the A's in Phoenix.
THE GOOD;Eric Chavez had three hits, including a double and a home run, and he drove in a pair of runs. Mark Ellis had two hits and drove in two runs, while Keith Ginter hit a two-run homer. Marco Scutaro also had two hits.
THE BAD; Right-hander Joe Blanton gave up eight runs, four earned, on five hits and three walks in 2 2/3 innings. Righty Kirk Saarloos gave up two unearned runs on four hits in his 2 2/3 innings, walking one and striking out two.

THE GOOD; Perez went 4-5 in the game with 2 runs scored.DH Matt Watson had 3 hits and 4 RBIs.Mark Ellis hit his team leading 4th home run of the spring.
Barry Zito went 6 innings this afternoon,giving up 3 runs,all earned on 6 hits,striking out 3.
THE BAD;The A's left 11 men stranded in the game.
The other A's split-squad game against the Angels was cancelled because of rain in Tempe.

The A's got a very solid outing by Rich Harden and the offense was led by Jay Payton and Antonio Perez as they defeated the Seattle Mariners 7-1 in Phoenix this afternoon;
THE GOOD; Rich Harden went 5 innings,giving up a run on 4 hits,walking 3 and striking out 7.A's pitching combined to whiff 12 Mariners in the game.
Jay Payton and Antonio Perez both went 2-4 in with a homer in the game.Perez drove in 4 runs thsi afternoon.Adam Melhuse doubled home a run.

Milton Bradley sparked a 12-hit attack as the A's took out thier cross-bay rivals the San Francisco Giants 6-4 this afternoon in Scottsdale.
THE GGOD;Milton Bradley went 2-for-3 with a double, a two-run homer and two runs scored. Nick Swisher rapped two singles and an RBI, while Bobby Crosby had an RBI double, single and run scored. Mike Rouse singled twice, notching an RBI.
Starter Dan Haren threw five scoreless frames, then yielded a leadoff homer in the sixth.
THE BAD; Justin Duchscherer gave up 2 runs,none earned on 2 hits and walked 2 in 2/3 inning in the 6th.He also had a throwing error in his outing.

THE GOOD;Bobby Crosby had two hits, including a double, and he drove in a run. Keith Ginter and Scott McClain each doubled home a run.SS Freddie Bynum was 2-2 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.
THE BAD;Esteban Loaiza made his first start since returning from the World Baseball Classic. He pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on five hits with a walk and no strikeouts.
Kirk Saarloos gave up 3 runs on 3 hits in 1 inning of work.Jay Witasick gave up 3 runs on 4 hits in an inning of work.

Scott McClain's RBI single in the 10th inning lifetd the A's to a 6-5 win over the host Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in Tempe.
THE GOOD;Nick Swisher delivered an RBI double, and Jason Kendall and Mark Ellis followed with RBI singles to score three runs in the top of the second inning. Jay Payton added a run-scoring single in the third to give the A's a four-run lead.
Freddie Bynum stole 2 bases on the afternoon.
THE BAD;Dan Meyer allowed three runs on five hits, including two homers. He also walked one and struck out one. Kiki Calero allowed two runs on two hits and two walks

Barry Zito was roughed up for 5 runs in 5 innings as the A's dropped a rare Spring Training night game to the visiting San diego padres by an 8-5 score Friday night in Phoenix.
THE GOOD; Jason Kendall had two hits and drove in two runs. The catcher has recorded two or more hits in three straight games. Milton Bradley and Scott McClain also drove in runs.
THE BAD; LHP Barry Zito gave up five runs on eight hits in five innings, including three home runs. He walked three and struck out seven.

The host Chicago Cubs held the A's without a hit through 9 innings until Dan Johnson singled in the 10th.But it was the Cubs that came away with a 1-0 win in Mesa,Az this afternoon in split squad action.
THE GOOD;Dan Johnson ended the Cubs' no-hitter with a two-out single in the 10th inning off John Koronka.
Starter Rich Harden threw six scoreless innings, giving up two hits and walking one. He struck out eight. Huston Street threw one inning.
THE BAD; The A's nearly became the 1st team since 2000 to get no-hit in a spring training game.

The other A's split squad team broght thier bats with them to nearby Peoria and ripped a new one into the host Seattle Mariners as the A's won the game 20-8.
THE GOOD;The A's scored their runs in bunches, putting up six in the first inning, four more in the sixth and nine in the ninth. Three walks to lead off the game set the table for Adam Melhuse's RBI single and a three-run double by Scott McClain. Mark Kotsay singled in two in the four-run sixth. Keith Ginter added an RBI single in the first, a solo home run in the seventh and an RBI double in the ninth. Kevin Melillo singled in two runs in the ninth, while Nick Swisher hit a three-run homer to cap the scoring.
THE BAD;Starter Chad Gaudin went 3 1/3 innings and gave up five runs on five hits while walking three batters and striking out two. Santiago Casilla gave up three runs on four hits and a walk in 1 2/3 innings of relief.

Dan Haren threw 6 innings of shutout ball,and Frank Thomas homered in his A's debut as they defeated the Colrado Rockies by a 3-1 count in Phoenix this afternoon.
THE GOOD; Haren went 6 innings in his start,allowing only 3 hits and striking out 6 batters.
Frank Thomas broke up Rockies starter Josh Fogg's no-hit bid in the 5th inning with a massive home run to put Oakland on the board.
Huston Street and Joe Kennedy each pitched a scoreless inning while Kirk Saarloos gave up a solo homer to Matt Holliday in the 9th.

Ariziona 3B Chad Tracy helped lead a 14-hit attack as the D-Backs defeated the visiting Oakland A's by an 8-2 count in tucson this afternoon.
THE GOOD;Bobby Kielty was 2-3 with a 1st inning double.
Newly acquired pitcher Brad Halsey faced hhis former team and gave up 2 hits in 3 innings of work.
THE BAD; Esteban Loaiza faced the D-Backs for the second straight outing and scuffled. The right-hander allowed seven runs on 10 hits in four innings after giving up four runs in 3 2/3 frames against Arizona last Wednesday.

The offense came alive for the A's this afternoon as they defeated the Texas Rangers 8-3 in Phoenix this afternoon.
THE GOOD;Third baseman Eric Chavez singled in the second inning and singled in a run in the third. Center fielder Mark Kotsay also had an RBI single, and designated hitter Frank Thomas capped Oakland's four-run third inning with a sacrifice fly. Thomas also hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth and has three RBIs in two Cactus League games. Pinch-hitter Marco Scutaro added a two-out RBI single in the sixth. John Baker singled and later scored on a wild pitch in the eighth, and Dan Johnson capped the A's scoring with an RBI single later in the frame.
Starter Joe Blanton had his best outong of the spring going 6 innings,giving up 2 runs on 4 hits,striking out 5.

Barry Zito and the A's had a rogh afternoon as they were trounced 12-0 to thier cross-bay rivals the San Francisco Giants in thier last game of the spring in Phoenix.
THE GOOD;Eric Chavez's double in the second inning was the lone highlight of the day for Oakland. Chavez was the only Athletic to get as far as third base
THE BAD;Lefty starter Barry Zito allowed four runs on six hits and a walk while striking out four. He allowed five home runs over 10 innings in his final two outings of the spring. Lefty Joe Kennedy threw a shutout sixth but gave up Finley's two-run homer in the seventh.
