White Sox, Crede agree on one-year deal

Jan 17, 2006

CHICAGO (AP) - Third baseman Joe Crede and the Chicago White Sox agreed Tuesday to a one-year contract worth $2,675,000 and avoided salary arbitration.

The 27-year-old was third among AL third baseman with a .971 fielding percentage and fifth in home runs with a career-high 22 for the World Series champions last season. He batted .252 with 62 RBIs in 129 games.

With Crede signed, the White Sox have no remaining arbitration-eligible players.

Crede was a key component during the postseason, hitting .289 with three doubles, four home runs and 11 RBIs as the White Sox won their first championship since 1917.

His ninth-inning double won Game 2 of the AL championship series against the Los Angeles Angels, and he hit a tying homer leading off the seventh inning in the fifth game of that series.

Crede can earn $200,000 in performance bonuses: $60,000 for 500 plate appearances and $70,000 each for 525 and 550.

Let's hope that next year we can lock him up for 3 years.

On the down side,Crede is a Scott Boras client.
