This Day in Baseball History - July 11

"A can-do mentality is a pitcher's best friend." -NOLAN RYAN, All-time strikeout leader

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(1914) Making his major league debut, Red Sox hurler Babe Ruth beats the Indians, 4-3.

(1944) At Forbes Field, Phil Cavaretta sets an All-Star game record by reaching base five consecutive times; the Cub first baseman's triple, single and three walks helps the NL beat the junior circuit, 7-4.

(1950) The Mid-Summer Classic returns to Comiskey Park, the site of the first game, and is won by the NL, 4-3 on Red Schoendienst's 14th-inning HR; it's a game of firsts - first extra-inning All-Star game, first time the NL won at an AL park and the first All-Star game ever shown on national television.

(1961) In the first of two All-Star games played that season, the NL beats the AL, 5-4 at a very windy Candlestick Park. Tihe contest features a record seven errors and Stu Miller being blown off the mound by a gust of wind

(1973) Batting in the leadoff spot, Jim Northrup knocks in eight runs as the Tigers beat Rangers, 14-2.

(1976) At Altanta-Fulton County Stadium, thirty-four couples are married at home plate and a wrestling championship match takes place in a promotion billed as Headlocks and Wedlocks. The Braves take down the Mets, 9-8.

(1978) At Jack Murphy Stadium, Steve Garvey becomes the first two-time MVP in All-Star history. The Dodgers' first baseman game-tying, two-run single and a triple helps the NL to beat the AL, 7-3.

(1980) The Dodgers sell knuckleballer Charlie Hough to the Rangers.

(1985) Astro Nolan Ryan K's Met Danny Heep for his 4000th career strikeout. The Ryan Express doesn't get a decision but the Astros beat New York, 4-3.

(1995) Mickey Mantle's final public appearance increases awareness of organ donation programs.

(1995) At the Ballpark in Arlington, Marlin Jeff Conine becomes the tenth player to homer in his first All-Star at-bat, and Frank Thomas becomes the first White Sox player ever to homer in the Mid-summer Classic as the NL out-homers the AL, 3-2. Craig Biggio and Mike Piazza also go deep for the Senior Circuit.

(1998) Padre reliever Trevor Hoffman, brother of opposing manger manager Glenn Hoffman, saves the Padres' 4-1 victory over the Dodgers. It's the first time in major league history a player has faced his brother as a manager.

(2000) At Turner Field, the AL beats the NL, 6-3 in the 71st All-Star contest, dubbed the All Scar game due to the many stars absent from the both lineups because of injuries. Yankees' shortstop Derek Jeter and Braves' third baseman provide the offensive punch with both going 3-for-3.

I don't know if it's impolite to laugh, but the image of a pitcher being blown off the mound is hilarious. :) :rotflmao:
