Piazza won't land in Bronx, could join Padres

While Yankee GM Brian Cashman won't publicly spike the idea, the Yankees are not planning on signing Mike Piazza, two team officials said yesterday.
But don't expect public closure between the Yankees and Piazza. Though Yank executives say privately their roster is set and they are unlikely to add the former Met slugger, Cashman refused to say yesterday if he had told Piazza's agents the Yankees were out.
"I don't think closure is necessary," Cashman said. "If we do sign him, we do. If we don't, we don't. I don't have a void to fill. It's whether I choose to sign a player or not."
In the meantime, the fact the Yankees haven't told the world Piazza is a definite no likely helps the former Met's bargaining position with other teams.
Vince Piazza, Mike's father, said yesterday his son had interest from the Cubs, Padres and Phillies.
USA Today reported yesterday that the Padres were close to signing Piazza and that he would compete for their starting catcher's job.
Some reports have said the Blue Jays are intrigued, too. "I know there's a lot of things happening, some discussions," Vince Piazza said.
"I would think he'd like to be in New York," Vince Piazza added.
"He'd certainly get a chance to get a ring. He's got a place there, he's used to all of what's up there. If not, you've got to move on. I can't tell what's going to happen."
