Has anybody heard anything regarding Rey Ordonez as of late? He used to be my favorite player and I haven't been able to find anything on him.

Last I heard he walked out on the Padres spring training when he realized Khallil Greene would win the starting SS job. He never said anything to anyone, he just walked out. Bochy was furious. Very unprofessional. He was fun to watch in the '90s but he just never recovered or gained any maturity after getting hurt during the '00 season.

Yeah after that JA, he signed with the Cubs and the last thing I heard was when he was designated for assignment back in July of 2004...
He was scouted and called by Washington last season to possibly serve as a back-up but his problem is that he's unwilling to accept a minor league assignment so to this day, he continues to be a FA...
He's only 34 but he's never been able to hit... Worthless if you ask me...

Tom: What did you like about Rey? The fact that he made great plays. Okay, but then he became in the rear end with his petulant attitude and the fact that he would be moody half the time. He sucked the life and energy out of the clubhouse along with Alomar. He started the demise of this team few years ago. His defense has gotten brutal to watch in the last few years. His comments about how Mets fans being stupid was uncalled for. Which team would want him?

I liked that he was an unbelievable fielder during his time with the Mets and is still great. He didn't just make plays, he had 102 games without an error which is the longest streak in MLB History. Brutal, I think not. There were some Met fans who critisized the Met players for "not trying" and "giving up" which is absolutely ridiculous. They deserve to be called stupid by him if any baseball fan thinks that. He and the Mets team had heart, they just didn't get enough production which led to the franchis'es demise from 2001-2004. The Mets have rebuilt and stacked their team, Rey Ordonez would add great defense and a veteran in the clubhouse with all of these youngsters. Reyes, Delgado, Beltran, Wright, Floyd, Lo Duca, and even Nady are all very good hitters. The Mets infield lacks defensive talent along with maturity. Wright and Reyes are good but Ordonez would add a playmaker and reliable glove out there at second base. Delgado is no Mientkiewicz, which makes the infield defensively challenged.
I just think that Rey didn't get the respect he deserved. Two home runs a year is ok when you have that brutal offense. Can we get a little noise for the defense?

Tom: No one hated Rey because his offense was bad. Everyone hated him because he became a pain in the behind with his surliness and such. He had fights with his teammates at times. I recalled he got into it with Luis Lopez several years ago. It's one thing or another with him. He is hated more because he was a problem child.
I gotta admit Alomar got a bum rap for not trying hard. He tried. Mets fans expected way too much for him. It just happened that his skills deteoriated big time and fans mistaken it for a guy who didn't care. It did not help that he was also was a problem child.
Mets just lollygag the last few seasons in Bobby's final year and during the Art Howe years. They didn't play with an emotion or a sense of purpose like they did in 97, 98, 99, 2000, and last season hence why fans became disgruntled.
Mientkiewicz and Ordonez whine about having starting job. Hell, Doug Mientkiewicz went to the only team that would allow him to start and that was the Kansas City Royals. At this point, no team will give Ordonez at starting job.
Ordonez final year as a starter he made 19 errors. Unbelievable fielder? Not even close. An unbelievable fielder is Omar Vizquel. Ordonez is no way unbelievable. Good? I would give him that, but he hasn't played in MLB since 04 and hasn't started since 02. You're vastly over-estimating how Ordonez's value. Also, Ordonez is a SS. I won't be too shocked he refuse to play 2B with his attitude. You don't bring wash up in to 2B.
Also, you Anderson Hernandez will get be groomed into 2B if Matsui continue to suck. When you have Matsui and Hernandez, you don't want to bring back a player like Ordonez at this point. Ordonez's defense might be good still, but since we haven't seen him basically since 04, we really don't know what level he's at this point. I would prefer trying to make a good all around 2B in Hernandez, who's 23, then bring back an old and most likely declining Ordonez.

To be fair to Dougie, he had a point. He did well with the Mets till he got hurt. He never had a chance to win his job back because Willie got tired of his nonsense which dates back to him being tossed at Denver. That was the last straw and Mike Jacobs played the rest of the way.
Doug deserved better.

Reyes and Wright are underrated defensive palyers IMO... Both are young and both are improving every year...
Ordonez did have the great defensive year in "99" but other than that, he is just slightly better than the league average for his career... Slightly better does not justify IMO the liability he was on offense... Seriously, he is one of the worst hitting players Ihave ever seen... His obp% for his career is .589, which is horrible! The only reason he had a job im baseball for as long as he did was because he was a good fielder....

a 589 OBP isn't bad
Ordonez was hurt in his last year as a Met which led to the demise of his defense in that time. He had surgery and repaired his knee but nobody will give him a chance. I think he's still got some left in him and wasn't as much of a troublemaker as you say. When your hurt, it's kinda hard to play unbelievable defense. He's healthy now, some bad team should give him a shot and see what happens. The Mets are in desperate need of a 2B, I just think he wouldn't be a bad idea. Great range, arm, and would produce more than Kaz matsui has in his last 2 seasons....

C'mon, James, Rey-O would get them home run a Philly every September. Not a good hitter my eye. ;)
I just want to agree with what's been said. Rey-O definitely was an above average/excellent fielder in his prime. Even after he came back in 2001 he was still great and exciting to watch. But his career is waaaaay over now. And yes, he absolutely did become a cancer in the clubhouse towards the end. He had to go.
I gotta admit Alomar got a bum rap for not trying hard. He tried. Mets fans expected way too much for him. It just happened that his skills deteoriated big time and fans mistaken it for a guy who didn't care.
I gotta disagree with that. Alomar was on a definite Hall of Fame track until he came to the Mets. Maybe he just couldn't adjust to the National League. Maybe he got lazy. Maybe he just relied on his reputation and thought he could float with that in New York. I don't know what happened. But I do know that he sucked as a Met.
Quite a shame.

I liken Alomar to Latrell Spreewell of the NBA's Timberwolves last year, Robin. Those two guys just lost their speed and their ability to play. It happens. I don't think anyone should confuse that to being lazy. It's not fun for sure, but it happens. Remember he stunk after he left the Mets. To me, the Mets got him in the twilight of his career and that's unfortunate. Oh well. At least, the Mets did not give up much for him when you look back.
