In Torre's perfect World,
Damon wouldn't play
Joe Torre's biggest problem as the Yankees begin spring training?
It's a toss-up between a surplus of pitchers under contract and new center fielder Johnny Damon's decision to play for the United States in the World Baseball Classic. All major league managers should have such woes.
"It looks like we'll carry 12 pitchers, like our club is cut and dry on who's going to be members," Torre said yesterday, at an appearance at Cipriani 42nd St. restaurant. "I don't want to say weed out, but we'll try to organize this spring."
As for the Damon slipping out of Tampa to join the U.S. team, Torre called it "sort of a problem" since the new $52 million Yankee center fielder won't be able to "mix the whole spring."
Curiously, Torre said it "doesn't bother me" that two other prominent Yankees, Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez, are also playing in the WBC.
In a comment sure to please The Boss, Torre added: "I'm sure the Yankee organization is unhappy about (the World Baseball Classic). People come down for spring training, pay their money to come to the ballpark and want to see these players. And they're not going to see them."
Torre wouldn't even speculate on the Bombers' interest in pursuing free agent and former Yankee Roger Clemens, who will also participate in the Classic: "Let's put it this way, I think there's going to be a lot of people interested."
An hour after Jason Giambi told reporters he expected to play more first base than DH this season, Torre supported his slugger's remarks.
"We want to keep the DH spot available for a lot of reasons. Jason, one. Bernie Williams, another. (Gary) Sheffield. (Hideki) Matsui. By the time the division series came up last year, we had a couple of guys that were exhausted," Torre said.

NO MIDDLE GROUND: It appears pitcher Shawn Chacon and the Yankees won't be able to agree on a deal, and the matter will go to arbitration. The Yanks have offered $3.1 million while Chacon is seeking $4.15 million. The arbitration hearing is scheduled for Monday.
