Apparently, our beloved (ahem) Barry Bonds is going to retire after this season, whether or not he breaks the all-time home run record.

There is also a poll up on espn.com asking whether or not he should keep playing if he doesn't break it. I voted no.

I think this would be really cool, if you can forget for a second what a jerk Bonds is, and about the steroids, and about how he permanently damaged my psyche by not being able to throw out the slowest guy in baseball at home plate. If he starts off hot, it will be one of the biggest stories ever. He needs like 47 home runs just to tie, so it will be tough. I guess a lot of it will depend on whether or not he is pitched to.

Honestly, I think I would have to say that I hope he doesn't do it. I'm really not the biggest Bonds hater in the world, but with all the steroids controversy, it would be like the asterisk they put on Marris, except even more ignonimous. But it would be fun if he made a run at it.

What do you guys think?

I am not sure. I actually like Barry. People forget that he told the Pirates he wanted to stay in Pittsburgh and would do so for a little less than his value and the Bucco's basically refused and let him go. They took the chance that resigning Van Slyke was their better option if I remember correctly. That was the main thing that led to the slide we have been in for all these years in my opinion. Poor front office decisions have killed us and until now, I did not see it ever truning around. Back to Bonds though, the steroid issue does trouble me a bit, but overall I still think he is one of the greatest to ever play the game and should be thought of as such. Others like, Ty Cobb, were also miserable at times, so his personality should have no bearing. I think health is the issue. If he stays healthy and has a great year, but does not reach it, then why not? Hank Aaron was far from the top of his game when he retired, so if Barry is still on his game, and feels he can do it, then why not try again? If his body is broken, then go gracefully.
