ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Rookie Ryan Drese, a late replacement for Cleveland starter Chuck Finley, earned his second major league victory as the Indians held off the Anaheim Angels 6-5 Wednesday night.
Finley opted out of his scheduled start after his wife -- actress Tawny Kitaen -- was charged earlier in the day with spousal abuse and battery for allegedly attacking him on Monday.
Drese, making his fifth career start, gave up three runs and nine hits in 5 2-3 innings. The 26-year-old right-hander, who went 1-2 with Cleveland last year, walked two and struck out two.
Ricky Gutierrez hit a solo homer in the eighth off Donne Wall to give the Indians a two-run lead. Gutierrez also singled and scored in a three-run second inning.
Matt Lawton and Brady Anderson each had two of Cleveland's 11 hits and two RBIs.
Indians closer Bob Wickman gave up an RBI single to Tim Salmon and a run-scoring groundout by Garret Anderson in the ninth to cut it to 6-5. But Wickman struck out Troy Glaus with a runner on second to end it and earn his first save this season.
Drese (1-0) outpitched one of Anaheim's heralded newcomers, Aaron Sele.
The 31-year-old Sele, signed as a free agent in the offseason, struggled in his Angels debut -- just as Kevin Appier did the night before.
Sele gave up four runs on eight hits in five innings. He walked three, struck out two, and threw 99 pitches. He left trailing 4-2.
Brad Fullmer doubled and scored on Benji Gil's sacrifice fly to pull Anaheim to 4-3 in the sixth. Bengie Molina's run-scoring single in the fourth narrowed the gap to 4-2.
Brady Anderson's RBI double gave the Indians a 4-1 lead in the third inning.
In the second, Lawton hit a two-run double and Russell Branyan had an RBI single as Cleveland moved ahead 3-1.
The Angels loaded the bases with nobody out in the first inning, when David Eckstein singled and Drese walked Darin Erstad and Tim Salmon.
But Drese allowed just one run -- on Glaus' one-out single -- and ended the inning when Fullmer hit into a double play.
Sele, whose 69 wins since 1998 were the most by an AL pitcher during that span, signed a $24 million, three-year contract with the Angels on Dec. 26. He was 15-5 with a 3.60 ERA for Seattle last season.
Finley did not come to the ballpark Wednesday after his wife was charged. Cleveland general manager Mark Shapiro said there was nothing physically wrong with Finley, and the 39-year-old lefty was expected to rejoin the team for its weekend series at Detroit.
Kitaen was arrested Monday night after arguing with Finley as they drove home from dinner to their Newport Beach home, said Tori Richards, spokeswoman for the Orange County district attorney's office. Kitaen, 40, was ordered released Wednesday on her own recognizance from Orange County Jail in Santa Ana.
Notes:@ Anaheim closer Troy Percival was not available and will miss at least the upcoming weekend series in Texas because of a strained right ribcage. He will be re-evaluated early next week. Percival pitched the ninth inning of Tuesday's 7-5 win over Cleveland, allowing a solo homer but earning the save. ... Drese pitched last season at Double-A Akron, where he was 5-7 with a 3.35 ERA, then at Triple-A Buffalo, where he was 5-1. He also made four starts for the Indians. Drese's first major league victory came in his first start, a 4-3 win over the Chicago White Sox on Sept. 1.
