MONTREAL -- Brad Penny pitched a four-hitter and Derrek Lee homered for the third straight game to lead the Florida Marlins to a 1-0 win over the Montreal Expos on Thursday night.

A sparse crowd of 4,551 at Olympic Stadium saw Penny continue his mastery of Montreal.

Penny, who went 4-0 with a 0.30 ERA against the Expos last season, struck out three and walked two in recording his second career shutout. Vladimir Guerrero flied out to the warning track in center field to end it.

Penny's only previous complete game was a four-hit shutout over Montreal last April 21.

Lee homered over the wall in deep right-center field with one out in the fourth off Carl Pavano (0-1), whose solid effort was overshadowed by Penny's performance (1-0).

Penny allowed just two hits through the first seven innings. Chris Truby and Brad Wilkerson hit consecutive one-out singles in the eighth and, with the Marlins' bullpen coming to life, Penny got Michael Barrett to ground into an inning-ending double play.

Florida missed a chance to extend its lead in the seventh when Luis Castillo singled and stole second.

One out later, Cliff Floyd was intentionally walked and Pavano fell behind 2-0 on Kevin Millar. That prompted Expos manager Frank Robinson to pull Pavano at 100 pitches.

T.J. Tucker relieved and Floyd was thrown out at second as part of an attempted double steal. Millar walked before Tucker struck out Mike Lowell to escape the jam.

Pavano, who went 1-6 with a 6.33 ERA last season as he struggled in his return from elbow surgery, allowed seven hits and one run in 6 1-3 innings.

Notes:@ Penny has won each of his six career starts against Montreal. ... Marlins C Charles Johnson was scheduled to begin an injury rehab assignment with Class A Jupiter on Thursday. ... Robinson used the same batting order through the first three games of the season.
