West Virginia Power table-setters are Cain ... and able
Darren Ford said Lorenzo Cain "is already close, like my brother."
As two-thirds of the West Virginia Power's 2006 outfield, Ford and Cain display a togetherness that could unhinge South Atlantic League pitching.
They bat 1-2 in the Power lineup, Ford playing center, Cain in right. Their lockers are next to each other's in the Appalachian Power Park home clubhouse.
Both played one season of junior college baseball in Florida, were draft-and-follow picks in the June 2004 amateur selection by Milwaukee -- where Cain was picked in the 17th round, one Brewer selection in front of Ford. Both signed last spring.
Ford is 20. Cain reaches that age next Thursday.
"I've got a guy who's 6-foot-1 and probably the fastest in the league batting in front of me," Cain said. "All I have to do is put the ball in play and Darren might score. He has that kind of potential."
Ford and Cain were more than able on Opening Night for the Power. The only thing that stopped the pair at the top of the West Virginia lineup was a steady rain, which finished the Power's 4-1 victory over Delmarva in six innings.
They opened the Power's first at-bat with a Ford single and a Shorebird error by right fielder Quincy Ascencion, who no doubt realized Ford was thinking two, which he got. Cain quickly doubled him home.
Ford singled twice and struck out. Cain doubled twice off Delmarva starter David Hernandez and reached on catcher's interference. They combined to score all four West Virginia runs and had four of the seven hits.
"I call (Cain) my ‘backup,' because I know if I get on, he's got a good chance to back me up with a hit," Ford said. "We're doing a lot together, but he's never batted behind me before."
The low Class A Brewers had a table-setting duo similar to Ford and Cain a year ago in infielders Hernan Iribarren and Alcides Escobar, but the Power never could find any consistent run-producers to bat in the holes behind them until No. 1 2005 draft pick Ryan Braun arrived in Charleston last July.
The RBI opportunity in the 3-4-5 spots for Mat Gamel, Angel Salome and Kenny Holmberg already was evident on Opening Night before a standing-room crowd of 5,742.
With the giant inflatable promotional toaster that sits atop the pressbox to lure drivers onto the I-77 entrance ramp, maybe the APP should be called the APPliance now.
What Power fans should be pumped up about, however, is the potential of the pair who are still deep in a Milwaukee system flush with outfielders.
"With these two, we've got plenty of speed at he top of the order," Power hitting coach Mike Lum said. "The more we get them in scoring position, the more opportunity will be there.
"Ford can take a single and make it something more.
"There's no doubt he needs to make contact better (he struck out once every 3.37 at-bats at short-season Helena last summer), and he needs to keep the ball out of the air."
Lum, a highly regarded batting instructor for almost two decades who still ranks 11th all-time on the Major League pinch-hit list, called Ford and Cain "still young hitters.
"They'll learn as they get more development," he said. "Right now, Ford is playing on natural ability ... Cain, I think he'll be able to hit for power eventually, and once both of them get more at-bats under the belts, they'll be able to make adjustments."
Cain, a 6-2, 165-pound Florida native (Tallahassee Community College), was the Arizona League's most valuable player last summer, batting .356.
Ford, fresh from Chipola Junior College and playing one level higher in the Brewer system, batted .271 at Helena.
He is regarded as the fastest player in the Milwaukee system.
Iribarren and Escobar, neither of which has Ford's speed, stole 38 and 30 bases, respectively, here last season. They hit .290 and .271, however. Ford and Cain will have to prove they can do that.
Power shortstop Ryan Crew knows what it's like to hit behind the fleet Ford. Crew batted .346 in the Arizona League in the rookie Brewers' No. 2 hole, seeing plenty of offerings to hit.
"It's the start of the season, and so you'll see a lot of fastballs," Cain said, "before people start throwing other stuff. Even after that, I guess that I'll see plenty of fastballs if pitchers are worried about (Ford) trying to steal bases.
"The first inning, with the big crowd, the noise, just got me pumped up. I played in Arizona last year; we don't have many people at games out there. Then he got on second to start it, and I said to myself, ‘I'm driving it and getting him in.' "
Driving in a Ford with big wheels?
It sounds like something the Power can use to get around.
Opener wet but successful
An inning definitely doesn't make or break a career.
However, if Kevin Roberts advances to the Major Leagues, he might recall the fifth inning of the West Virginia Power's 4-1 victory over the visiting Delmarva Shorebirds on Thursday as one of the moments that helped him get there.
The Opening Night starter for the Power (1-0) on a chilly and rainy evening at Appalachian Power Park, where a crowd of 5,742 fans gathered for the South Atlantic League game, Roberts cruised through the first four innings.
He retired the first seven batters he faced and allowed only one hit -- a bloop single between second base and centerfield -- during that stretch.
"Then, I hit a wall," Roberts said of the fatigue that allowed the first four batters he faced in the top of the fifth inning to reach (three on walks and one on a fielder's choice).
"I was all over the place," he said.
With the bases loaded and the Shorebirds (0-1) trailing by two, Quincy Ascencion provided a sacrifice fly that scored Arturo Rivas for their first run.
None of the infielders cut off left fielder Michael Brantley's throw, which bounced in front of home plate and skipped past catcher Angel Salome, allowing Rob Marconi and Stuart Musselwhite to advance into scoring position.
Up came Zach Davis, with a chance to be a hero.
Power pitching coach John Curtis already had decided Davis would be Roberts' final batter regardless of the result. Reliever Ronny Malave was waiting in the bullpen, ready to enter when needed.
But Roberts (1-0) "dug deep," where he found enough strength and control to throw three more fastballs over the plate, striking out Davis to end the inning.
"I battled and got through it," said Roberts, a 6-foot, 190-pound right-hander whom the Milwaukee Brewers selected in the fifth round of last year's draft.
"You have to go back to the basics and find that one thing that will get your ball back down where it needs to be. I did that for the last couple of batters, and it got me out of it without any major damage.
"Obviously every inning isn't going to go as planned," he said. "Whenever you have a bad inning where you can't find it, you have to be able to adjust right then and there before it blows up."
Roberts' overall performance and his ability to overcome adversity impressed Curtis.
"It was terrific," Curtis said. "It was more than we could have asked or expected here on Opening Night. He wouldn't be human if he didn't have butterflies. But the competitor he is, he went out there and brought the ballgame to them. He gave us five great innings.
"He got into a bit of trouble, but he held his own. To me, that is a big plus in his column. That's a character thing. There's a mechanical part of pitching, then there's a character part of pitching. He showed determination. He wanted that win.
"It's what a coach looks for. That's a very difficult thing to instill in a young man. You look for it, and if you see it, you ride it."
Roberts' night ended after 76 pitches, nine under his team-imposed maximum. He yielded one run on one hit and recorded five strikeouts compared to three walks in five innings.
"That was the best performance I have seen from him since last year in instructional ball," Power Manager Mike Guerrero said of the 21-year-old Roberts, a former two-way star at the University of Houston. Baseball America ranks him as the Brewers' 29th-best minor league prospect.
"If he keeps doing what he did today, he is going to have an awesome season," Guerrero said.
The Power added two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth, and Malave pitched a scoreless sixth - the final inning, thanks to a 53-minute rain delay -- to preserve the win.

Power has ugly ending to Delmarva series
Consider this a case study for relief pitchers.
Its title: "How not to close a game."
With their team leading by four runs in the top of the ninth inning, West Virginia Power relievers Brandon Parillo and Dane Renkert allowed the Delmarva Shorebirds to turn a 7-3 deficit into an 8-7 victory in their final at-bat Sunday afternoon.
Many of the 2,931 fans who attended the South Atlantic League game already had left Appalachian Power Park before the final inning because they assumed it was merely a formality.
It wasn't.
"Parillo and Renkert just didn't get the job done," Power Pitching Coach John Curtis said. "No excuses. It's plain to everybody that when you can't throw strikes, you are doing your team and the lead we had harm. It came back to bite us."
Parillo and Renkert threw 35 pitches, 19 of which were called balls.
"It's just throwing strikes," said Power starter David Welch, who should have picked up his first win after he allowed one run on one hit -- a solo homer in the fourth -- and finished with nine strikeouts compared to three walks in five innings.
"I had trouble with it, too. I walked three guys, too. That's all it is.
"If you just throw the ball over the plate, they are going to get themselves out. If you walk guys, you are going to get in trouble."
Power relievers Ronny Malave (no runs on two hits in two innings) and Steve Palazzolo (two runs on three hits in one inning) followed Welch and preceded Parillo.
Parillo faced Kyle Dahlberg, Rafael Rodriguez, Quincy Ascencion and Lorenzo Scott in the ninth but retired none of them.
Parillo allowed one hit and yielded three walks, the last of which plated Dahlberg and started the Shorebirds' rally with their first run in the final inning.
Renkert entered and fared no better than Parillo. His first four pitches were balls, walking Stuart Musslewhite and scoring Rodriguez. Renkert (0-1) then surrendered a single to Brandon Snyder, whose hit scored Ascencion.
Mark Fleisher and Arturo Rivas followed Snyder with a groundout and a single, respectively, to score Scott and Musslewhite.
A 6-4-3 double play mercifully ended the inning for Renkert and the Power, which hurt itself by stranding nine baserunners.
"I told them things can't get much worse than that," Curtis said.
The Power threatened to return the favor in its half of the ninth, when Mat Gamel and Angel Salome started the inning with back-to-back singles.
Ned Yost moved Gamel and Salome into scoring position with a well-placed sacrifice bunt down the first-base line. But Ryan Crew hit into a game-ending double play in which Rodriguez caught his line drive at second base and threw to Rob Marconi at third base to pick off Gamel.
"It's tough to swallow when you lose one like that," said Crew, whose club dropped to 1-3.
The Power wasted not only a solid performance from Welch but also a spectacular one from Salome, the designated hitter who went 5-for-5 with a single, a homer and a pair of doubles.
"You have to shake it off," said Salome, who also scored two runs and knocked in another one. "What can you do about this game? Nothing. It's already in the past."
Darren Ford (3-for-5 with three RBI), Bradley Willcutt (2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI) and Gamel (2-for-4 with two runs) also had multiple hits for the Power, which scored three in the second, one in the sixth and three in the eighth to build a 7-3 lead entering the ninth.
"We have to bounce back," Gamel said.
The Power won the season-opener between the teams but has lost three straight.

Power pitchers cool Greensboro's hot bats
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Grasshoppers weren't able to snatch the base-hits, much less the pebbles, from the West Virginia Power pitchers' hand here Monday.
The result was Greensboro's first loss of the South Atlantic League season, as the Power held the hot-hitting Grasshoppers to five harmless hits in the 2-0 win.
Greensboro came into the game with a 4-0 record and a SAL-leading .345 batting average. But the Power pitching trio of starter Robert Wooley, reliever Rafael Lluberes and closer Wilfrido Laureano handcuffed the Grasshoppers.
Lluberes (1-1) got the win, while Laureano got his first save.
Shortstop Ryan Crew paced the Power attack, driving in both runs.
Meanwhile, catcher Angel Salome continued his on-base streak by reaching during his first four at-bats Monday. Salome has reached base on nine consecutive at-bats dating back to Sunday's game.
West Virginia(2-3) and Greensboro continued their four-game series at First Horizon Park today with a 12:30 p.m. game. Right-hander Kevin Roberts (0-0, 1.80 ERA) was scheduled to start for the Power.

Grasshoppers stumble in extra innings
GREENSBORO -- They got the solid, hold-them-close pitching from their bullpen, and they got the clutch late-inning hits Wednesday night.
It was just as the Grasshoppers had done throughout the first week of their South Atlantic League season. The only thing missing was a victory.
Kenny Holmberg's second home run of the night, a two-run, opposite-field shot to right field, lifted the West Virginia Power to a 5-3 triumph in 12 innings at First Horizon Park.
Greensboro (5-2) had scratched out single runs in the eighth and ninth to send a game to extra innings for the first time this season.
"I think in this last week we've shown we have the ability to come back, and that's a good sign," Hoppers manager Brandon Hyde said. "I think we have a lot of character on this team. I'm proud of the way they came back late in the game again."
Their final comeback effort fell just short.
When Gabriel Sanchez hit a broken-bat dribbler that West Virginia's shortstop couldn't handle cleanly, it put two Greensboro runners on with two outs for Kris Harvey, who had earlier homered. This time, after two outside strikes were called against him, the Clemson alum took a somewhat defensive swing against Dane Renkert and flied out to short left field.
There was no dramatic, walk-off home run. Harvey believes he just missed hitting one out in the eighth inning, though, when he lined a single to left field to score Jeff Van Houten, which cut the Power's lead to 3-2.
"Van Houten got on, then Gaby, then the guy left a curveball up that I probably should've hit out for a three-run homer," Harvey said, "but I got on top of it a little bit."
Harvey beat out a force play at second to load the bases, but Jonathan Fulton struck out to end the threat.
All three West Virginia pitchers -- starter Derek Miller and relievers Ronny Malave and Renkert -- kept a lid on the Grasshoppers' offense for most of the night, allowing only one extra-base hit and one earned run, while striking out 15.
Greensboro's bullpen matched them. After a decent five innings from starter Aaron Thompson, relievers Jarrett Santos, Jason Iehl and Blake Jones held the Power in check until Holmberg's homer off Rafael Galbizo in the 12th.
Jared Gaston got to second base on a pair of Power errors to open the bottom half of the ninth inning. Justin Webb moved him to third, and Agustin Septimo brought home the tying run with a base hit into right field.
"You can never count us out," Harvey said.
Power wins in extra innings
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Kenny Holmberg's second home run of the game lifted the West Virginia Power to a 5-3 win over the Greensboro Grasshoppers in 12 innings Wednesday night.
It was the first extra-innings game of the season for the Grasshoppers, who dipped to 5-2 on the season.
West Virginia entered the contest with just one home run in its first six games. Holmberg hit his first of the season in the top of the first inning, off Grasshoppers starter Aaron Thompson.

Grasshoppers draw swarm of fans
GREENSBORO -- So what do you get when you combine a winning baseball team, a beautiful evening and $1 beer? Eventually, the Greensboro Grasshoppers had to stop trying to answer Thursday night.
First Horizon Park is only in its second year of existence, but the throng of 10,137 that packed the joint to watch the Hoppers fall to West Virginia 6-3 may stand as a record for a while. The Perfect Storm consisted of 82 degrees and a setting sun.
"I shut down the box office in the fifth inning and there were still people coming up," Hoppers president Donald Moore said. "It's unbelievable. But I figured it would be that way around 6:15, when we were already starting to get people."
As for the game, the Hoppers (5-3) fell when two early errors led to four unearned runs for the Power. One hard-hit but apparently routine grounder rolled through the legs of third baseman Jonathan Fulton, and it ultimately permitted a run-scoring single. In the fourth, shortstop Agustin Septimo bobbled another roller with two out and the bases loaded to bring two West Virginians in. But nobody out of uniform seemed all that bothered by that or anything else. The Hoppers outdrew their major-league parent club, the Florida Marlins, by nearly 2,000 fans on Thursday.
"This place never ceases to amaze me," manager Brandon Hyde said. "They do a good job of marketing the product. Too bad we didn't play better in front of the big crowd, but it was awesome."
Lured by the weather and Thirsty Thursday, a discount-beer promotion sponsored by Natty Greene's Pub and Brewing Company, the crowd exceeded the park's published capacity of 7,599 by 33 percent. It beat the previous First Horizon mark, set one week earlier, when Opening Night conspired with the reduced-priced suds to attract 9,110 spectators to the most recent crown jewel of the Joseph M. Bryan Foundation.
It was believed to be the second-largest turnout in the city's baseball history, which dates to 1902. The standard of 12,602 was established on Aug. 22, 1979 -- the Gate City's first season with a team in a decade. The Greensboro Hornets, led by future New York Yankees first baseman Don Mattingly, over-filled War Memorial Stadium on a specially marketed "Break The Attendance Record" night.
The Lakewood (N.J.) BlueClaws own the South Atlantic League mark of 13,003, achieved against the Hickory Crawdads on Aug. 26, 2002.
It would probably be a stretch to say a good time was had by all -- in large part because there were so many. Lines near the GrandStand, the left-field bar area, were often five or six deep.
Asked if he enjoyed being part of history, Steve Shelton of Greensboro said, "Yeah, sure, but I'd rather be able to see the game."
The safer haven was on the newly constructed concrete walkway and adjacent hill in left field, the updated amenity unveiled by team ownership last week.
"I do have to be selective where I stand, but I really like it," said Scott Sholar of Greensboro. "The more people out here, the better."
City fire officials have officially enumerated the facility's logistical capacity at 10,000, but Moore said they arrived at that figure before the recent improvements and are likely to raise it rather than cite the team for contempt.
Cpl. E.S. Allen of the Greensboro Police Department reported no serious crowd-control issues.
"We had to escort a couple of underaged girls out of here because they were trying to drink (alcohol), but other than that, nothing," he said. "And that's the way we like it."
Power manager likes team's traits
West Virginia Power Manager Mike Guerrero noticed a never-give-up attitude in his team after its season-opening, four-game homestand against the Delmarva Shorebirds, who won the series with three victories.
"We could have been 4-0," Guerrero said of what became a 1-3 home start. "But the good thing is, we have battled every game."
That, as it turns out, has been a season-long trend.
The Power's first eight games (4-4) have been decided by a total of 16 runs.
CHARLESTON IS back home tonight to begin a three-game series against Lexington after taking three of four at Greensboro, finishing the series with a 6-3 win Thursday night.
Will Inman, the right-hander who was Milwaukee's third-round pick in last June's draft, worked five scoreless innings for his first South Atlantic League win.
Lorenzo Cain, on his 20th birthday, led West Virginia with two hits and an RBI, and the Power sealed the victory with two ninth-inning runs, after Scotty McKnight started the rally with a triple.
Left-hander Joe Thatcher, moved from extended spring training to the Power earlier this week, got the save.

Lexington jumps on Power early
Eric King went 4-for-5, Sean Walker pitched six shutout innings and the Lexington Legends were successful in their first South Atlantic road game last night with a 9-2 victory over West Virginia at Charleston.
Walker (2-0) gave up five hits, walked none and struck out seven while lowering his earned run average to 0.82.
The Legends never trailed after striking for two runs in the first. King, who had singled with one out, scored the first run on a throwing error by catcher Angel Salome on a pickoff attempt. Mitch Einertson's two-out single up the middle scored Ole Sheldon from third to make it 2-0.
Two more throwing errors by Salome helped Lexington put up single runs in the third and fifth innings, and the Legends put away the game with a four-double, four-run seventh.
After West Virginia got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the eighth, Sheldon hit a solo homer in the ninth to close out the scoring.
Lexington had a season-high 14 hits. Catcher J.R. Towles went 3-for-5 to improve his batting average to .476. King is hitting .407.
