Jason Giambi of the New York Yankees named Bank of America Presents the American League Player of the Week
New York Yankees first baseman Jason Giambi has been named Bank of America Presents the American League Player of the Week for the period ending April 16th. Bank of America, the Official Bank of Major League Baseball, is the presenting sponsor of the American League and National League Player of the Week Awards, which reflect Bank of America's long-standing tradition of promoting and recognizing higher standards of accomplishment.
Giambi led all American League batters by hitting .571 (8-14), adding four home runs, 10 RBI, a 1.571 slugging percentage and a .700 on-base percentage. The five-time A.L. All-Star drew five walks, scored six runs and collected 22 total bases over five games to win the third weekly award of his career and his first weekly honors as a member of the Yankees. On Tuesday Giambi launched a first inning three-run home run and collected three walks to help beat Kansas City 9-7 in the Yankee Stadium home opener. The next day Giambi doubled twice and drove in two to help beat the Royals 12-5. Giambi went deep again in the series finale on Thursday to help New York complete a sweep. On Sunday Giambi helped avoid a three-game sweep in Minnesota as he homered twice, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored as New York beat the Twins, 9-3.
Other candidates considered were Paul Konerko (.522, 4 HR, 9 RBI) and Jim Thome (.350, 4 HR, 7 RBI) of the Chicago White Sox and Tampa Bay's Ty Wigginton (.320, 4 HR, 9 RBI). Pitchers considered for the award were Boston's Josh Beckett (2-0, 1.93 ERA, 14.0 IP), Baltimore's Erik Bedard (2-0, 1.20 ERA, 14.0 IP), and Detroit's Mike Maroth (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 7.0 IP, 3 H).
In recognition of this honor, Tourneau, the world's largest watch store, is proud to award the Bank of America Presents the American League Player of the Week Jason Giambi with a Tourneau luxury Swiss timepiece.
