A friend of mine is suscribed to the ESPN Insider. Here's what it says about the Sox in todays issue:
Red Sox after another Pedro?
The Red Sox, in attempt to replace the injured Pedro Martinez, may make an offer for Rockies right-hander Pedro Astacio, reports the New York Daily News.
The Rockies have been trying to deal Astacio since the beginning of time, but their asking price thus far has been an obstacle. The Red Sox may have interest, however, because of the uncertainty srrounding the return of Martinez, who's on the DL with an inflamed rotator cuff.
A Boston television station says Martinez will be out for the season, but most estimates have Pedro coming back some time in mid to late August.
Everett sees green
Red Sox centerfielder Carl Everett, who's planted on the DL with a balky right knee, has been cleared by team docs to increase his baseball activities.
"The recommendation is that he gradually increase his activity," said team medical director Arthur Pappas. "I just saw him on the weekend. He's now been able to take it easy for a few days [during the All-Star break]. When he gets back, I expect he will try to pick it up in New York."
Everett suffers from a stretched medial collateral ligament and has been on the DL for almost three weeks, which has led some teammated, most notably Trot Nixon, to question Everett's resolve in coming back as quickly as possible.
Pappas says there is not yet a timetable for Everett's activation from the DL.
Red Sox/Expos: Closer Ugueth Urbina of Montreal, whose trade to the Yankees was 86ed by a failed physical, may have caught the eyes of the Red Sox, reports the Boston Globe. Boston seeks pitching help in the wake of recent injuries.
