The Colorado Rockies still don't know for sure what's ailing slugger Todd Helton. They just know they're going to be without him for a while.
The Rockies placed their star first baseman on the 15-day disabled list Saturday because of a stomach ailment. The move was made retroactive to April 20. The five-time All-Star was hospitalized with stomach discomfort and a fever on Friday and will remain there until testing and diagnosis are complete, the team said.
"With respect to the privacy of himself and his family, I'm not going to make any comment on his condition, other than the fact we believe it's in his best interest to put him on the disabled list," manager Clint Hurdle said. "The doctors acquired all the information they needed."
Even with the Rockies still winning you could tell that Hetlon being gone effected this team. :(

I've been listening to the radio most of the day, and there is still no real info on what is wrong with him. Sure hope it's nothing too serious - he was hitting well, along with the rest of the team. We need him in the lineup - he's pretty much the heart and soul of the Rox.

Rockies first baseman Todd Helton is expected to be released from a hospital today, with team officials hoping to learn a diagnosis of his severe abdominal pain tonight or Tuesday. "We should have a much better idea after a couple of days," Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd said. "That's when the results should be back." Helton was admitted to Rose Medical Center on Friday, complaining of intense stomach cramping and a high fever. These are among the hallmark symptoms of Crohn's disease, a chronic disorder that causes inflammation of the digestive or gastrointestinal tract. It is one of the illnesses investigated over the past few days, along with potential kidney stones and intestinal infections, as doctors search for answers.
Man this just isnt sounding good. Shealy on the DL and now this with Helton. Man this isnt going to be something when he feels better he grabs a bat and off we go again. He is going to be weak, lose muscle and just not as strong.
With the great start I hope the team can keep it going for some time hold the fort down. But with the couple of wins without Helton could help this team a ton also. Knowing they can win vs one of the better teams in the NL West without the big guy can let them know that they can get it done so when Helton does come back they will be that much better.

That's scary. Isn't there some kind of virus circulating the Rockies clubhouse?

His condition improved but his stomach ailment undiagnosed, Rockies first baseman Todd Helton returned home Monday after four days in the hospital. The Rockies expect to learn today what caused Helton's illness after a final battery of tests is analyzed. The feeling around the clubhouse about Helton's condition was much improved because he was much improved. Doctors have been testing for everything from Crohn's disease to intestinal viruses. Helton, 32, turned the corner Sunday, responding to treatment, which was interpreted as a positive sign. On Monday, Helton ate for the first time since arriving at Rose Medical Center on Friday, having breakfast and lunch before being discharged.

Man, don't know about you, Shad, but that word 'terminal' in the middle of the name for this maladay would scare the holy poop outta' me if some doc told me that's what I had. I'm guessing in this case it just means it's on the end of the intestine, though this article does not explain it that way.
Glad to know they've at least got it figured out.

DENVER -- Todd Helton's stomach problem is a mystery no more. The Rockies said Tuesday the first baseman has been sidelined with acute terminal ileitis, an inflammation near the end of the small intestine. Team internist Dr. Allen Schreiber said he has prescribed more rest for the five-time All-Star before having Helton begin light exercise.
Helton, 32, was hospitalized Friday with stomach pain and released Monday to rest with his family.
Helton was placed on the disabled list retroactive to April 20 and will not be eligible to return to the active roster until May 5. However, the team said there is no timetable for him to come back.
This season, Helton is hitting .347 with one home run and nine RBI. He went on the DL last year for the first time in his career with a strained calf.

Rockies first baseman Todd Helton, eligible to rejoin the team Friday, is making steady progress coming back from a severe stomach ailment (acute terminal ileitis) that put him in the hospital for three days. "Todd's been riding the bike and taking some hitting practice," trainer Keith Dugger said. "He's doing well and he's eager to do more, but we're being smart bringing him back." Dugger said Helton is watching his diet, including eliminating spicy foods. The Rockies also are monitoring Helton to make sure symptoms, such as acute pain, don't reoccur.

Colorado Rockies first baseman Todd Helton will begin a minor league rehab assignment at Triple-A Colorado Springs on Tuesday.
The team announced the move before its game against the Atlanta Braves on Monday.
Helton was hospitalized April 21 with an intestinal problem. At the time, he was hitting .347 and leading the NL with a .529 on-base percentage.
In his Colorado Springs debut, Helton is expected to start and play five innings against Tacoma. The Rockies didn't say how long the rehab stint would last.

Helton had been feeling poorly for some time before being hospitalized.
"I was losing weight pretty rapidly," Helton said of the time leading up to his hospitalization, noting that he is still about 10 pounds under his normal weight of 215. "I never did feel like eating. I felt very weak. And then it just sort of led up to that."
The ailment, acute terminal ileitis, is an infection at the end of the small intestine. Doctors hope it is a one-time condition that won't flare up again, but if it does recur, doctors would look into a possible connection with Crohn's disease, among other complications.
Though doctors were not able to pinpoint a cause for the ileitis, Helton understood there were steps he could take to help maintain his health.
"I probably didn't take care of myself as well as I should," Helton added. "I've got a few habits that I probably need to change."

Helton is leading the charge of Rockies returning from rehab assignments. He went 1-for-3 with a single and a walk, playing all nine innings in Triple-A Colorado Springs' morning game on Wednesday and Hurdle confirmed Helton will be in the Rockies lineup on Friday.
