BOSTON -- Boston Red Sox outfielder Carl Everett can increase his rehabilitation activity when the season resumes Thursday in New York, team doctor Arthur Pappas told The Boston Globe.

Everett has been on the disabled list since June 22 because of an injured right knee, and his activity has been limited to riding a stationary bike, light jogging, fielding one-hop ground balls hit directly to him and some swings off a hitting tee.

Pappas reviewed a second magnetic resonance imaging exam taken Sunday.

"The results appeared to be pretty much the same as the previous one," Pappas told the newspaper. "He stretched the ligament to the inside of his right knee. The test showed no additional ligament or cartilage damage, and inflammation was minimal.

"The recommendation is that he gradually increase his activity. I just saw him on the weekend. He's now been able to take it easy for a few days [during the All-Star break]. When he gets back, I expect he will try to pick it up in New York."

Everett stretched his medial collateral ligament, which is classified as a first-degree MCL injury, the least severe kind. The MCL prevents instability in the inside of the knee joint. Typically, a stretched ligament is treated with ice and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Normally, activity is limited until the pain and swelling subside.

"It's usually a couple of weeks before a player feels comfortable doing things," Pappas said.

Everett's condition sparked some controversy last week after Trot Nixon, who has played center field in place of Everett, expressed concern about the length of Everett's absence and raised questions about whether Everett was doing all he could to rehabilitate himself. General manager Dan Duquette said last weekend that he did not share Nixon's concerns, and Everett accused the media of distorting Nixon's remarks.

I can't wait to have Crazy Carl back. Comined with the addition of Nomar @ the end of Augest, Pedro and Varitek's return in about a month, and hopefully, a major addition to the ball club, we could certainly contend for the whole shabang..

But will we still be around the Yankees by then?

If so, you got to love our chances..
