Maddux still bothered by inflamed nerve in back

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

ATLANTA -- Atlanta Braves right-hander Greg Maddux was placed on the 15-day disabled list for the first time in his career Friday night.

Maddux

Maddux, who missed his opening day assignment on Monday because of an inflamed nerve in his lower back, received a cortisone shot on Wednesday and had been expected to start on Sunday against the Mets.

He threw in the bullpen on Thursday and said he felt he was ready to go. But the Braves announced after their 9-3 loss to the New York Mets on Friday night that Maddux would be sidelined.

The injury was originally diagnosed as a strained muscle in his right hip, but an MRI exam Tuesday showed three inflamed areas in his right hip and buttocks area.

The four-time NL Cy Young Award winner is eligible to be activated on April 10.

The Braves purchased the contract of right-hander Aaron Small to replace Maddux on the roster.

Damian Moss is to start in place of Maddux on Sunday against the Mets.:crying2: :crying2: :crying2:

Maddux going on the DL really weakens the Braves' pitching staff. Glavine is very good but he can't beat most of the other number one starters, Maddux could.

The Braves better hope that this is nothing serious as after Glavine and Maddux they really aren't very strong....
Marquis may be pretty good but is still unproven, Millwood is coming off a bad year and no one is sure what you will get from him and Albie Lopez just sucks....
So after Tom and Greag your not sure what you will get...
Is there any chance at all that they may bring Smoltz back as a starter if the Maddux injury is more serious???

There may be a chance that Smoltz I would like to see that. The starting rotation has really lost its edge over the last few years:fro:

Smoltzie didn't look too shiney last night...he may be their only option, though, in the short term. Glavine didn't have his best stuff last night, either. Father Time may be creeping up on them...
