Though I'm hardly a huge soccer fan, I am getting a tinge of excitement about the upcoming World Cup. Love to watch WC action since it's the very best of the game.
First up, a photo from the recent friendly between Poland and Lithuania. Couldn't help but think there's a Polish joke in here somewhere with one team scarf upside down and another backwards :D

And here's an article about the England side and their new teenager Theo Walcott...
FIFA World Cup.com ... 09May06 (http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/060509/1/6q8u.html)
Theo Walcott may not have kicked a ball in anger for Arsenal but the England teenager will be writing his name into the record books in the coming weeks.
The surprise name in Sven-Goran Eriksson's provisional England squad for the FIFA World Cup™, Walcott will supplant Wayne Rooney as his country's youngest ever player if, as some expect, he makes his senior international debut against either Hungary or Jamaica in the run-up to the finals.
Walcott will be 17 years and 86 days old when England play their opening match against Paraguay, meaning he could become the second youngest player in finals history behind Northern Ireland's Norman Whiteside, who appeared at the 1982 FIFA World Cup 41 days after his 17th birthday.
And if, as England fans hope, Eriksson's men go all the way to the Final on 9 July, he could, at 17 years and 116 days, become the youngest player to appear in a FIFA World Cup Final, beating the record set by Pele in 1958, when the Brazilian was 17 years and 249 days. Not bad for a teenager not included in Arsenal's 18-man squad for the UEFA Champions League final.
Walcott, who was taking his driving theory test when the England squad was announced, has played only 23 times in senior football, appearing in second division and cup matches for his first club, Southampton, prior to joining Arsenal in January.
Like any Premiership football watcher, Eriksson has not seen Walcott play 90 minutes in the flesh – the Swede said yesterday that he had "seen a lot of him on videos" – and admitted his likely role was as a substitute. "I don't think Walcott or (Arsenal manager Arsene) Wenger think he is going to play seven games of 90 minutes in the World Cup. But sitting on the bench, if I see there is space out there, I will use his pace."
Teenage kicks
However, Walcott and Aaron Lennon - the uncapped Tottenham Hotspur winger also included by Eriksson - are not the only precocious talents preparing to pack their suitcases for the FIFA World Cup. Of the other teenagers seeking kicks in Germany, great things are expected of the 18-year-old Argentina forward Lionel Messi (who turns 19 on 24 June), while Cesc Fabregas, 19 last week and a colleague of Walcott's at Arsenal, will be looking to shine in the Spain midfield.
Elsewhere, Netherlands coach Marco van Basten's attacking options include 19-year-old Ryan Babel, England's first opponents Paraguay will take to Germany the promising 18-year-old Jose Montiel, and midfielder Joao Moutinho, 19, is hoping for the call from Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari.
Finally, Mexico fans have high hopes of Andres Guardado, a 19-year-old winger who made his international debut last December only three months after his first senior appearance for his club, Atlas. A rapid elevation by any standards – at least until Walcott came along.
Ten youngest players in FIFA World history:
1 - Norman Whiteside, Northern Ireland, 1982 - 17 years and 41 days
2 - Samuel Eto'o, Cameroon, 1998 - 17 years and 99 days old
3 - Femi Opabunmi, Nigeria, 2002 - 17 years and 101 days
4 - Salomon Olembe, Cameroon, 1998 - 17 years and 185 days
5 – Pele, Brazil, 1958 - 17 years and 235 days old
6 - Bartholomew Ogbeche, Nigeria, 2002 - 17 years and 244 days
7 - Rigobert Song, Cameroon, 1994 - 17 years and 353 days
8 - Carvalho Leite, Brazil, 1930 - 18 years and 25 days old
9 - Manuel Rosas, Mexico, 1930 - 18 years and 88 days
10 - Segundo Durandal, Bolivia, 1930 - 18 years and 122 days

..and to mention what that says above about Theo Walcott...
If he even snifs much of the field for England, they're in trouble. The guy hasn't even come close to the pitch for Arsenal yet...
The fuss surrounding the selection of Walcott has been outrageous....everyone's hailing him the new Rooney already.:evillol
The most embarrassing aspect was Eriksson being forced to admit that he'd never even seen him play.
And Dan, about Holland....I fancy them to take their group ahead of Argentina, and go on to knock out England in the Quarter-Finals.

The Walcott thing is hilarious...Sven is on the way out, so he finally takes a risk.
Why pick a player who was NEVER played in the top-flight? Oh well, at least Rooney and Owen are ready to play. :hmm:

Good matches so far....I can't wait for tomorrow to see if the USA can get a result against the Czechs. We need something out of this one considering we have Italy next. I would have rather played Ghana to start...oh well.
England, Portugal and Holland didn't look too impressive in their wins.

Holland was fine. We looked good going forward...Serbia is just a very tough defense to crack. They only gave up one goal in all of qualifying, to Spain. We'll be fine in that aspect...especially if Robben learns how to pass/cross the ball. Anyways, I didn't enjoy how much space the outside backs gave them attacking, and a more proficient team may have made us pay.
The next game against Ivory Coast should be a real cracker. My gut feeling says 2-2 draw, although I'd really appreciate the three point! :)
As for the US...in the predictor game I did, I predicted a draw vs Czech and Ghana and a loss to Italy. However, I'm not feeling so confident about the US getting any points off of the Czechs right now. I think I'm gonna go for a 2-1 defeat.

Hi guys. First time posting here. Nice forum. I love all things football ( soccer for our American friends ). Some might laugh when I say this but I think france will win the WC. England are dreadful. They don't have a chance. I watched Brazil last night. That Ronaldo is over-ratted. I alwys thought so anyways and last night proved it to me beyond doubt. I think he ran about 30 yards in the whole game.
PS Thanks for having me

Ronaldo is a fat, lazy bastard, but they don't even need him
I don't think France will win it...they looked pretty miserable against the swiss...Spain looked good, but they always do until the knockout phase
The US didn't deserve to lose 3-0..The Czechs just punished us for every mistake...oh well..it just stinks to have your world cup ruined after one game...Playing Italy next, and needing a win is not a good situation.

can't believe Germany pulled out a win today, in extra time nonetheless. I thought for sure it would end up 0-0. Poland is done now.
Spain looked great today. I thought Ukraine was a better team them that. At least they (Ukraine) did the US a favor by surpassing our futility. Hopefully we will have a better showing against Italy this weekend.

I would have loved TNT to tie or even win against them. England hasn't shown that they're a good team as of yet, which in my opinion aren't.
The top teams in the world Cup are: Brazil, Italy, Czechs and thats about all that comes to mind. I really do hope that Italy face Brazil in the elimination match because they'll beat the brazilians (they're the only team that can).

He plunged right at Pirlo and striked him on the ankle. Even though his intentions were for the ball he missed, which (to the ref) looked like intent to injure. Italy didn't play good AT ALL. They were lousy, LOUSY! They were lucky to come out with a tie. Although they played lousy generally they took over in the last 20 minutes or so, too bad Keller made some great saves. Stupid DE ROSSI for elbowing the US player, thats just stupid. Gillardinio's goal was superb. USA got to work on the attack and defence!

Standings:
ITALY +2 4pts
CZECH +1 3Pts
GHANA +0 3Pts
USA -4 1Pts
Next week will be tight and crucial for all teams. Ghana vs USA and Czechs vs Italy. Italy must win to qualify. If Italy/Czech ties and Ghana win, the Czechs are out. USA can still make it by winning, thats if Italy wins.

See, here's the thing about that. Most of the time, that's probably gonna be yellow instead of red. However, refs are always looking for an opportunity to even it up after they send someone off from the other team. Stupid, I know. Anyways, Mastroeni has to know better than that to make a stupid tackle like that. If he's making that tackle before a goal is imminent, fine. However, they were out around the middle of the pitch when that happened. An absolutely unecessary tackle. It's really too bad. The USA was in great shape at that point, a man up, and controlling the run of play. But still, a draw against Italy after going down to 9 men is an amazing result. They could still make it to the second round which would be unbelievable coming out of this group.

I think maybe what Ray meant is that some of the fouls are kinda petty.. It seems, at least in a few of the games I have watched, that they are so quick to blow the whistle.. Is this the norm or are they more strict during WC play? I think it really slows the game down a lot...

It's down to FIFA. They know they're on just about every TV on the planet during the WC and they suggest (in other words warn) the refs to book any "intended and/or malicious" fouls to keep their image "clean". Typical FIFA really. They want the best WC ever and they kill the pace of evey game by telling the rafs to book players for petty challenges :hmm:

Americans always complain about the amount of fouls in soccer...Or "it's too slow"....Yet they watch basketball, a sport where you can barely touch each other. Or they are NFL fans, a sport where a flag is thrown every 2 plays, and the average play lasts only 4 seconds. Don't forget Commercials Commercials Commercials Commercials Commercials.
Yet soccer is "too slow".
It boggles my mind.

The FIFA rankings are a total joke. They use some cock-a-many equation that rates games way too high that shouldn't be...and ones that are worth a lot too low. A better one is the ELO rankings. They had the USA around 18th or something. That sounds a bit better to me.

Didn't this happen to Poland, that they didn't make their top goal scorer play? This remeinded me of Italy in the last World Cup and so on, when they would have a lead and instead of pressing and playing to win, they would play to defend giving the opponent ample of oppertunities to tie the game. This ugly strategy by the italian coach kept backfiring. It got me on my nerves, but now they play differently, but still haven't proven that they're "THE" team to beat.

Italy vs Australia
Australia really surprised me, they dominated the entire game, playing with a men more. The red card given to Italy's defenceman was questionable. It shouldn't have been a red card, a yellow I would be able to live with but red??? Anyways Australia were all over Italy, but if it wasn't Italy's defence it was Buffon stopping them. The most disappointing thing that happened for Australia was in the 95th minute, when Grosso deeked one player and another, but while the Australian defenceman was on the floor (he slided to early) he lifted his elbow, preventing Grosso from going through. Grosso was tripped and Francesco Totti was taking the penalty shot. This was at he 95th minute, so if Totti was to score it was over. Basically Totti scored, ending the game. But all in all Australia deserved to win. Sometimes when teams play better than the other they lose. Italy wasn't there at all, Hopefully they learn from this and play the way they're expected to. Nesta should be back by Friday, hopefully. Canavaro + Buffon were lifesavers.
Quick Notes:
Australia's goalie made some nice saves but a very LUCKY save on Toni as he dived opposite of where the ball was heading, but fortunetly to him the ball hit his foot.....very lucky. Gigi Buffon made quite a few life saving saves, denying them from the corner kick and from a couple of feet.
BTW Datch, the commentary on TSN said "This is why Buffon is the best Goalie in the world."

That's insulting. They don't dive like other teams do, and you'd be surprised how a small shot to the leg can hurt. I'll admit sometimes they exagerate a bit but who doesn't? Every team dives on purpose or fakes an injury. Look at Thiery Henry against Spain, when he went down, which the free kcik led to France's second goal. What was that? He didn't get hit in the face.

it's not just Italy doing the diving, although I was really pissed off at that "penalty kick" that was awarded in the late late minutes of the aussie-italy game.
fact is, every team is doing it, and it's disgusting. It completely ruins the game for me. They're all acting like a bunch of freaking pussies, and Blue, they're wearing shin guards. The penalty shot awarded to Italy was indeed a penalty shot because of the way the aussie defenceman lefted his arm instead of keeping low. Yes, the ref maybe should have stopped the game and let it continue in extra time, but then if Australia would score and win (Which they played better, but with an extra man) how would the Italians react and feel, when the penalty shot should have been awarded.
The refs at the world cup have been totally garbage but they've always have been, atleast from what I remember. And Datch, about the shinguard, they also get hit right on the side where it doesn't protect. I've played soccer in the passed and I got that alot. Refs should be more strict on dives (red cards automatic).

giving red cards on dives will ruin the game even more! there will be 6 or 7 red cards a game, and they'll end up with 5 people on each side. Maybe start fining them a couple million dollars everytime they dive, that should do it.
as for the shinguards...I've played soccer too, and you know what? pain is a part of the game. I can't believe you're defending people who fall to the ground as if their legs have just been shot off, then get up right away and limp a little 5 seconds later after they realize that nobody freaking cares.
they're babies, and they need to grow the hell up.
and I guess we differ in opinion about the penalty kick, which makes sense since you're a fan, and I'm not.

this is very difficult for me, but I truly do not like Argentina. With Maradona's "hand of God", and that little bastard Ariel Ortega in 1998...old wounds die hard I guess.
I wish neither team could win, but i'm still going with Germany in this one, as much as it pains me.

Out of these four matche's this week, which should be the most intriging and interesting to watch?
I'd say Germany vs Argentina.

It really should be. The Argies have a lot of individual attacking talent...and the Germans are playing like Dutch-wannabies. (Playing much better than us at our own game  ) Anyways, it should be an entertaining match. Speaking of, gotta shower so I can get down to the pub!

That's insulting. They don't dive like other teams do, and you'd be surprised how a small shot to the leg can hurt.
Ehhh...my little cartoon was not directed at any one team in particular. JHFC, get a sense of humor, Blue. :D As a sports junkie who is enjoying the World Cup but doesn't really follow the sport, I see players flopping and diving all over the place, and it's not any one team in particular.
I want to see England win. The rioting in England will be HISTORIC if they win the Cup! :D

They've got some depth to make up for it...especially in the midfield. It should be a battle between them and Ingerland.
Brazil v France should be a good one as well. France might just give them enough trouble...

Tuesday's game:
Germany vs Italy (Italy should win)
Wednesday's game:
Portugal vs France
I'm rooting for an Italy-Portugal Final
Wow big games today, first off with the shootout with Portugal/England. Sucks Beckham got an injury, and the 2nd game with France and Brazil. France played way better, Brazil seemed they were gonna actually do something in the late minutes of the game. Henry terrific goal. France only to beat Brazil in how many or so games? Im still going for Italy, since they are neighbors with Greece. We know only one thing. Europe is the champs!

Ack, and Italy v Portugal final would be the most disgusting final. I'd explain why but I don't particularly want to offend Blue!
I suppose of the final four remaining I would prefer for France to win.

ITALY! ITALY!
They should and will win. I doubt France will be able to beat our defence and the worlds best goalie! Barthez was good and bad during the France-Portugal game. Near the end when he threw the ball upwards, he was VERY lucky Figo missed the net. Did anyone notice that France played like Italy did? take the lead and play defence for the rest of the game.

Have you ever seen Italy play a couple of years back, when they scored and played defence which sometimes backfired. It's the way they played, they brought their fowards back to help the defence, meaning no attack. Trust me, no team played like Italy did defensively.

What ZIdane did was terrible, it destroyed his reputation and who he is. I still love him as a soccer player and consider him one the best players in soccer, but what he did was just wrong. I understand that players can get on your nerves by insulting you but as a professional you got to keep your cool and and striking your anger towards them by scoring. If he would have spit in Matterazi's face or puched him, it wouldn't be that bad, but by head butting him like a rhino just destroyed his career. People will not look at him the same.

punching him, or spitting at him in the face is better than headbutting a guy?! are you joking? they're all just as bad.

I'm not saying spitting and punching or shoving isn't bad it just isn't that bad compared to what he actually did. If he would have spit in Matterazi's face, people wouldn't be critizing Zidane all that much and his career wouldn't have been destroyed. Take a look at Totti. He spit in the guys face a while back, yes it was bad, but then again we don't know what the other player said to him. All in all I'm against all this and I truly believe players such as these professionals should be able to calm themselves down and not pay any attention to any comments.

Translated to english by a lip reader. I wish an ugly death to you and all your family, Go F*** Yourself.
Thats pretty dirty espeically considering the fact Zidane's mother is sick, you can see why he would be pissed off.
Zidane has had a history of dirty ass plays. He has headbutted someone before, and also stepped on a guy purpously, and served a ton of suspensions. this is from another forum. I don't know if thats what Materrazi really said, it's possible, but if thats what he said he deserved the head but.

This just in...
PARIS (AP) - French soccer star Zinedine Zidane apologized for head-butting an Italian opponent during the World Cup final, saying Wednesday that he was provoked by insults about his mother and sister.
''I apologize, to all the children'' who watched the match Sunday, Zidane said in his first, highly-awaited comments about the act of violence that marked the end of his career.
Zidane did not specify exactly what Italian defender Marco Materazzi said that enraged him, but that it was insulting to his sister and mother.
''I would rather have taken a punch in the jaw than have heard that,'' Zidane said, stressing that Materazzi's language was ''very harsh.''
Zidane and Materazzi exchanged words after Italy broke up a French attack in extra-time. Seconds later, Zidane lowered his head and rammed Materazzi in the chest, knocking him to the ground.
Zidane was sent off, reducing France to 10 men. Italy went on to win in a penalty shootout.
The France captain said he felt no regret for his act, ''because that would mean (Materazzi) was right to say all that.''
At nearly the same moment Zidane was appearing on French TV, excerpts from an interview that Materazzi gave to Italian sports daily Gazzetta dello Sport were posted on the newspaper's website.
''I didn't say anything to him about racism, religion or politics,'' Materazzi told the Gazzetta. ''I didn't talk about his mother either. I lost my mother when I was 15 and even now I still get emotional talking about her. Naturally, I didn't know his (mother) was in the hospital, I give her my best wishes.''
''He's always been my hero, I admire him a lot.''
For days, sports fans around the world have been riveted by the question: What could Materazzi have said to set Zidane off? Media from Brazil to Britain hired lip readers to try to figure it out, then came up with different answers.
Materazzi has acknowledged he insulted Zidane, without giving specifics.
Materazzi spoke to Zidane in Italian. Zidane, who played for several years at Turin club Turin, speaks Italian.
Despite the head-butt, Zidane was awarded the Golden Ball award for best player at the World Cup - though FIFA president Sepp Blatter has suggested Zidane could be stripped of the honour.
''The winner of the award is not decided by FIFA, but by an international commission of journalists,'' Blatter said in Italian newspaper La Repubblica. ''That said, FIFA's executive committee has the right, and the duty, to intervene when faced with behaviour contrary to the ethics of the sport.''
In France, many have already pardoned Zidane, even without his explanation. A poll published Tuesday in Le Parisien newspaper showed that 61 per cent of the 802 people questioned forgave Zidane.

According to a radio host at the team990, the stories said by Zidane and hjis mother didn't conenct and make much sense. Zidane said that Materazzi insulted his mother and his sister, but Materazzi has told the media what he told Zidane.
"When I grabbed his shirt (Zidane) he told me 'if you want it I'll give it to you after the game,' to which i replied 'I rather where your wife's shirt."

Mostly I blame the players for being a bunch of pussies and lying down on the field writhing in pain after every tackle.
