Well, it's 3:40 CST, and the Cubs are close to dropping 9 out of 10. It's obvious that no one can pick up the slack in the lineup with Lee out. Maybe a trade is in order. I wouldn't mind to see Wood depart for a player with the likes of Mench, or someone around his level, to boost this offense. Also, I'd like to see Baker gone.

baker isnt going anywhere unless he quits. not anytime soon at any rate. besides, you have to put more blame on Hendry than anyone. he's the one who built the team.
i dont care how you juggle the lineup, when you are down 5-0 after one inning, chances are you arent going to win.

Cubs are now about to lose 10 out of their last 11, down 7-2 in the 5th. The Cubs are in serious trouble right now. The season is on the brink of destruction. If they fall to 10 games below .500 or more, it is over. Nothing can save them then when they reach this point. Failure is imminent.

They should cut their ties with Wood and Prior. They still have Zambrano. They can get a couple good bats and pitching prospects for them. They may have had a few great games, but they have been busts.

I say make Wood a closer, put Dempster back in the rotation and trade Prior for a bat and maybe a younger pitcher. All this could only happen when/if Wood and Prior get healthy and then PROVE they're healthy. Plus, what happened to Aramis Ramirez? He was a stud last season, seems as if he hasn't found his stroke in '06.

Get rid of Wood, keep Prior. Dempster has only blown one save in the last however many years, oh well, it happens. Ramirez is struggling because he doesn't have D Lee in there. Same with Pierre, Jones, Walker, Murton. Neifi Perez should never step onto the field. Here's what the Cubs lineup should be day-in and day-out, these constant changes in the order just screw guys up, BIG TIME.
CF-Pierre
2B-Walker
LF-Murton
3B-Ramirez
RF-Jones
C-Barrett
1B-Mabry
SS-Cedeno
Pitcher's spot.
No if's, ands, or buts about it.
Consistency is the key to success.

At least Wood's coming of the DL. For how long nobody knows. The only way I can see this guy staying healthy is to move to the pen.

the pen wouldnt be good. think about it. he has trouble staying healthy throwing every 5th day. how do you think he would feel pitching on consecutive days?

I agree with getting rid of Prior. I'm sure the Yankees would not mind paying him what he would want to sit on the DL. They pay all their other pickups to sit there. Woods could make a good closer, but I don't think you would want to move Dempster out of that spot, that is why I think he should be traded for other players. He has a big enough name that they could get somebody to give alot for him. If you remember Dempster's time with the Marlins and Reds, he was a complete disaster as a starter. I was very upset that they gave up J. Encarnacion for him.

Worked for John Smoltz, Tom Gordan, and Billy Wagner. All these guys had constant injury problems, but when they got switched to the pen, SUCCESS!
With Smoltz he was able to return to the rotation, but Gordan, who was a successful starter but unhealthy, got a lot better and healthier in the pen. For some reason pitching more (the Leo Mazzone way), but not as long is easier on the shoulder. The Marlins did once with Beckett when he was having blister and shoulder problems (on temp). It doesn't always work, ala Eric Gagne, and his "issues" but I think it's the only shot Wood has at being a productive player for an entire season. Wagner was an injured prospect and becoming a closer saved his career.

No way Wood goes to the bullpen. Either he, Prior or Maddux will be gone by the trade deadline, depeneding on who is pitching the best and what the Cubs situation is at the time. Such a shame how far things have fallen since the offseason 2003-2004. When we signed Maddux we thought we had the best starting rotation in baseball. Of course in true Cubs tradition, it all went to crap.

I don't think they can get much for Wood (especially Wood) and Prior has to...PITCH first, but you never know, something has to change. Maddux on the other hand, I don't think they'll trade him because he's going to retire soon. I doubt he would have comeback this season to just be traded. Wood, Prior, Zambrano, and Maddux may be the best rotation in baseball, if they were ever healthy at the same time.

yeah, I agree with you on that. At the same time, the Cubs have a option for him next season (at $13 mil) and there is no way they will pick it up. So he will be a free agent come 2007. So anything they can get for him now is better than nothing later I guess.

Very true. I didn't realize he is going to be a free agent.
