Former third-round offensive tackle Wayne Hunter, a three-year veteran released by the Seattle Seahawks last week after being charged for his alleged role in a fracas at a sports bar, has been claimed on waivers by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Hunter, 24, becomes the third high-round offensive lineman added by the Jaguars this spring via either free agency or waivers. Tackles Mike Williams and Stockar McDougle, former first-round choices of Buffalo (in 2002) and Detroit (2000), respectively, were signed earlier in the offseason. Hunter figures to battle them for a backup spot behind starters Khalif Barnes and Maurice Williams.

---I know it isn't much, but it is Jags news. ANybody know anything about Hunter (other than his stats)?

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- The Jacksonville Jaguars added two veteran wide receivers Friday, signing unrestricted free agents Troy Edwards and Randy Hymes.

The signings come eight days after Jimmy Smith retired.

Edwards played for the Jaguars in 2003 and 2004, and played in three games for the Lions in 2005. In 92 NFL games, including three seasons with Pittsburgh (1999-2001) and one with St. Louis (2002), the 5-foot-10, 185-pound Edwards has 203 receptions for 2,404 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Hymes spent all five of his seasons in Baltimore after the Ravens originally signed him as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2002. The 6-3, 211-pound Hymes played in all 16 games a year ago, with three starts, 11 catches for 132 yards and two scores. In 37 career games, Hymes has caught 43 passes for 578 yards and four touchdowns.

Last week, Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said the team wouldn't sign a veteran receiver to replace Smith.

"Our approach will be to develop the guys that we have and we have some young talent at that position," Del Rio said. "I remain very confident in the guys that we have that they're going to be able to help us be real effective

Jags coach Jack Del Rio expects Fred Taylor to arrive for camp in top shape, the same way he did at the mandatory minicamp in early May. "He's healthy coming into this season instead of going into camp not practicing, and you're hoping he's back and [wondering] how soon can he start working. He's training like a madman, and he's on a mission," Del Rio said. "And you add a guy like Maurice [Drew] and he has some explosiveness to him, and we're looking at things that Greg [Jones] does well, and then there's our line play.'' Drew, the team's second-round draft pick, is only 5 feet 7, but he's a speedster who might be able to break long runs as a part-time back. Jones is a good blocker who adds a change of pace.

I'm wondering who will step up and fill the number one reciever spot left vacant by the retirement of Jimmy Smith? I'm guessing Matt Jones will get the biggest boost in receptions, but I wonder if Reggie Willaims will take this opportunity to show why we drafted him in the first round a few years back or will Ernest "drop pass" Wilford (favorite as the number 2 reciever) be the man to step up? Also, the Jags have Troy Edwards and Cortez Hankton as well as a new TE in Marcedes Lewis. What do you guys (and gals) think?

FINALLY someone says something about the Jags:
http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=jc-observations080106&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

*One thing that coach Jack Del Rio is particularly pleased with is the number of players who showed up to training camp saying they were "in the best shape of their lives," as Del Rio put it.
"I think guys got a taste of it last season by going to the playoffs, but the way we lost to New England (in an ugly 28-3 affair) kind of shocked them," Del Rio said. "I think a lot of guys went into the offseason knowing they'd have to put in all the effort if they're going to make the most of this opportunity."

*Aside from quarterback Byron Leftwich, offensive lineman Mike Williams has also lost a serious amount of weight. Williams, the former No. 4 overall pick by Buffalo in 2002, said he dropped 37 pounds since June. At the time, he was more than 400 pounds and headed for the waiver wire. Williams at least has a chance now, but it's still slim. That's what happens when you really don't like football all that much.

*Wide receiver Matt Jones is a surprisingly graceful runner despite being 6-foot-6. Jones said he spent much of the offseason watching tall receivers such as Chad Johnson of Cincinnati to learn techniques about getting in and out of cuts.

What he has improved most is his speed in the first five steps of a pattern. "I can just feel that I'm not thinking anymore. I'm just moving and playing instinctively," said Jones, a first-round draft pick last year who played quarterback at Arkansas.

*Don't be surprised if you see the Jags put in a package of plays specifically for rookie running back Maurice Jones-Drew. The 5-foot-7, 208-pound Jones-Drew has sensational quickness and speed and could come up with some game-breaking plays if used correctly.

*Speaking of running back, don't be surprised if fourth-year veteran LaBrandon Toefield doesn't make this team. Between Fred Taylor, Alvin Pearman, Greg Jones and Jones-Drew, the Jags look pretty loaded at running back.

*Jaguars wide receiver Reggie Williams, the No. 9 overall pick in 2004, was off to a good start in '05 before suffering two concussions that slowed him until the end of the season. Williams said he had problems with his balance and that simply running took a lot of effort at one point.
"It was weird, really weird," Williams said. "It's like you've been eating breakfast your whole life and then one day you can't even get a Cheerio on a spoon."

It's still early, but one very good sign about Williams this year is that he's running out all of his routes this season, even when he is clearly not the primary receiver in the play. "You never know when the ball is coming to you," Williams said.

Del Rio has put Williams in with Jones and Ernest Wilford to compete for a starting job. "Right now, we want Reggie out there knowing that all the hard work he has put in has earned him a chance to be out there," Del Rio said. "Reggie has put the work in. We just want to make sure he doesn't get frustrated."

*Speaking of Williams, he does have an odd way of signing autographs. Not the actual signing, but just the method. As Jaguars players leave practice, they go through a gauntlet of fans on either side. Most players simply stand in one place for five or 10 minutes and sign for fans. By contrast, Williams darts from side to side with no apparent rhyme or reason, signs three or four and then moves to the next spot.

*Wilford might be one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet, and his enthusiasm for football is pretty obvious when you watch him practice. "I love everything about this game. I really do," he said. "I love this game. I even love the smell of Flex-All."

****I'm just glad to see a national outlet write about the Jags.

Living in near Jacksonville (and going to school in J-ville) the word about Byron Leftwich differs.

Some, like me, think he's a great QB who's recievers are addicted to dropping the ball, even Jimmy Smith and see the Jaguars play calling as "run-run-pass on 3rd and long." When everyone knows what you are going to do, it's aweful hard to mount any offense.

Others see Byron as overratted and would rather see mobile but erratic David Garrad or awesome but untested Quinn Gray play. I like the fact that Garrard is mobile and I like what Quinn has done against second and third string offences, but I believe Byron is the man.

WHAT DO PEOPLE OUTSIDE OF JACKSONVILLE THINK. Come on people, I post in your threads, don't hesitate to post in mine.

It seems as if Ernest Wilford is going to be the number 2 reciever next to Matt Jones. Reggie Willaims on the other hand, has looked like crap and will be the number 3 reciever or worse.

PEACE
Brett

PS I heard WIlford came into camp with an ungodly 3% body fat. Damn.

---This sucks, now all we have left is Fragile Fred and a rookie (I'm not counting Toefield):

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- Jaguars running back Greg Jones will miss the season after having surgery Monday to repair a torn ligament in his left knee.

Jones, the team's starting fullback and Fred Taylor's primary backup, injured his knee Saturday against Tampa Bay. Coach Jack Del Rio initially said it was a sprained medial collateral ligament, but tests revealed a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

"It's unfortunate," Del Rio said. "He's a great football player. He's my kind of guy. I have a lot of respect and admiration for the way he plays the game and the way he prepares himself. I can't say enough about him. He's a great young man and I know he'll come back strong. We're going to miss him."

Jones sustained a similar injury to his right knee during his final season at Florida State and dropped to the second round in the 2004 NFL draft. He ran 62 times for 162 yards and three touchdowns as a rookie, but was featured more last season. He carried 151 times for 575 yards and four scores.

The Jaguars had planned to platoon Taylor and Jones this season, using the 6-foot-1, 250-pound Jones in short-yardage situations and near the goal line.

Now, Derrick Wimbush moves into the starting fullback spot and LaBrandon Toefield becomes Taylor's main backup.

"The depth we have gives us a greater sense of security," Del Rio said. "LaBrandon has had an excellent camp. He's stayed healthy. He's shown bursts. He's had a great camp."

PEACE
Brett

The Jaguars' leading tackler the past three seasons, Mike Peterson could heal in time to play in the Jaguars opener on Sunday, Sept. 10 against the Dallas Cowboys. But there's also a chance he won't be ready, given the difficult nature of gauging recovery time for an injured ligament. "He's a little sore, but we'll continue to be optimistic that we'll have him back by the opener," Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said. "Obviously, we've got to make preparations just in case that's not the case."

Jags RB Greg Jones has to go through a year-long rehabilitation. And he'll come back next season with two surgically repaired knees and might need more than a year to become a threat as a running back. Jones said he was running with a "bounce in his step'' this year, more than three years after his last surgery in 2002. Jones was expected to challenge veteran Fred Taylor for playing time this year. Jones, who will wait two weeks to let his sprained MCL heal before undergoing the ACL surgery, said he thinks he'll have a faster recovery this time because he has less pain and swelling than he did in 2002 and he didn't suffer cartilage damage.

The Jacksonville Jaguars released 21 players Saturday, including offensive tackle Wayne Hunter and defensive tackle Anthony Maddox.

Other veterans released: guard Derrick Fletcher, receiver Randy Hymes, cornerback David Richardson, center Brett Romberg and tight end Todd Yoder.

--All the other players were 1st year players and it didn't come as any suprise that they were cut. The Jags are looking good. Hopefuly our OL is ready and our WR's have gotten all the drops out of there systems.

PEACE
