Ending one of the feel-good stories of the 2006 season, reliever Joe Winkelsas announced his retirement from baseball Monday night before Class AAA Nashville's game against Round Rock. After a seven-year absence from the major leagues with career turns that included collecting garbage in Buffalo, N.Y., Winkelsas was summoned by the Brewers from Class AA Huntsville in late May.
Winkelsas, 32, pitched in seven games for the Brewers, going 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA before being sent outright to Nashville. In six appearances there, he was 1-3 with one save and a 5.06 ERA. Winkelsas allowed three ninth-inning runs in his final outing Saturday in a 3-2 loss.
"I guess on one hand you could call him a realist," Ash said. "On the other hand, it was a bit surprising."
