HOUSTON -- The St. Louis Cardinals will be without right-hander Woody Williams for at least a few weeks after he was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday because of a strained left oblique muscle.
"It's frustrating, but there's not much you can do except let it heal and that takes time," Williams said. "There's no way to be certain how long it will take. It could be a couple or even three or four weeks. Who knows? It depends on how fast it heals, you can't rush it."
Williams left Friday's game against Houston after laying down a sacrifice bunt in the top of the third inning because of tightness in his left side. He admitted later that he had been bothered by the injury since early in spring training and had re-aggravated the injury during the last pitches he threw in the second inning.
"Better to get healed now than try to pitch and make things worse and miss even more time," he said.
Williams, 35, went 15-9 with a 4.05 ERA for San Dieog and St. Louis last season. He was 7-1 with a 2.28 ERA in 11 starts with the Cardinals. He was making his first start of the season when the injury occurred.
"We're just going to have to let him completely heal and start getting him into shape after he does," said Cardinals manager Tony La Russa.
The Cardinals recalled right-hander Mike Crudale from Triple-A Memphis to take Williams spot on the roster. Williams was scheduled to start Thursday against Milwaukee. The Cardinals have not named a starter to replace him as of Saturday afternoon but is likley left-hander Bud Smith, who started at Triple-A Memphis on Friday, will be called up.
