NEW YORK (AP) -- Chicago Cubs catcher Michael Barrett was suspended for 10 games and White Sox outfielder Brian Anderson five games for a bench-clearing brawl that led to four ejections.
Barrett, who punched White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski to ignite the melee, and Anderson also were fined an undisclosed amount by Major League Baseball on Friday.
White Sox third base coach Joey Cora was suspended two games and fined, while Pierzynski was fined for the incident during the interleague game on Saturday.
In the second inning, Pierzynski knocked Barrett over at home plate before the throw arrived and slapped the plate after the collision as the ball got away. Barrett then punched Pierzynski.
Anderson, who hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to score Pierzynski, got into a fight with Cubs first baseman John Mabry. Mabry injured his ribs in the commotion and was taken to a hospital for X-rays.
Barrett, Pierzynski, Anderson and Mabry were ejected.
The game was delayed nearly 15 minutes before Tadahito Iguchi hit a grand slam to give the White Sox a 5-0 lead en route to a 7-0 win.
All three suspensions are scheduled to begin Friday, when the White Sox are at Toronto and the Cubs host Atlanta, unless appealed.
--I enjoyed this moment. Seeing Barret just wack A.J. in the face was enertaining and I like Barret more so becasue of it. But, it was his fault and unnecessary, so at no suprise to anyone he got suspended.

Sounds like a pretty fair penalty to me. But I started thinking, "What if Barrett had really hurt Pierzynski?" Ass Jaw being an asshole aside, what if Barrett had broken Pierzynski's jaw or something like that?
They need to consider a suspension PLUS the games that the injured player misses, in my opinion. Same thing for pitchers who are ejected for beaning a batter. If Oswalt plunks Barrett in the helmet with a pitch and Barrett has a concussion that causes him to miss a week, then Oswalt would get his suspension PLUS six games if that's what Barrett missed.

I know you're at least somewhat joking, and granted, I got a laugh out of it nonetheless, but I for one have trouble respecting anyone who starts a fight, especially if it was completely unprovoked like this.

Wuss. :D
Honestly Datch, Barrett is not a psycho for God's sake. He felt he was plenty provoked. Did AJ get suspended?

I'm not saying he's a psycho...shoot, if everyone who ever started a fight was a psycho, we wouldn't have enough room in mental wards to fit all of them.
You say he felt plenty provoked. Please, he should have known better. Nothing in the replay showed AJ going to do anything. In fact, it looked like he was more off balance than anything when he sort of brushed Barrett. Then, after he grabbed him in a bearhug, and AJ did nothing, the dude still punched him in the face! Sorry, but that's pretty inexcusable.
I just can't believe that he's being portrayed as some kind of hero because he punched a guy. What kind of message does that send? How can you enjoy a moment in which one person takes a shot at another, especially since the other guy was utterly defenseless?
I'm not talking about this in a baseball sense, but in a general sense. I don't care whether or not AJ got suspended. I was just amazed that Skineg enjoyed that moment, and actually thinks better of the guy.

and I think that's the longest post i've ever made on addicts.

Yes, I enjoy seeing an a$$hole get punched in the face. You have to figure 1,000 other players (including teamates) wanted to do it for him.
Oddly enough I was watching the first inning of the Braves an Cubs on TBS and the announcers were saying how, if Barret wanted to put out a collection plate for hitting AJ he could probabley get a lot of donations from other players. They also said if their was a player who was disliked more that AJ they'd be hard to find. So yes I enjoyed the suckerpunch. As a matter of fact I laughed out loud when I say the highlight.
PEACE
Brett
PS I'll be going to the FSUvs. Somebody and then Georgia Tech vs. somebody college WS play-offgame in J-ville, but if sober enough, or if I don't see AJ and get thrown in jail for sucker punching his ass, I'll be posting late tonight. I love the place.

and I'm the only person who sees a problem with this?

the problem is AJ has made himself so hated in the majors that he gets no benefit of the doubt. should he have hit him? no, but i'm not going to shed any tears over him either. :)

I don't give a rat's ass about how much of an asshole the guy may be. What he did was unjustifyable, regardless of whom he hit.

NO!
I'm sorry, but I wouldn't. Especially if that person was someone i'd never met before, and had only seen on tv.
well, on second thought, my first reaction might be something like: "serves him right", but I know for sure that after that I'd be pissed off with whomever punched him, I wouldn't gain respect for the guy and that's my major beef with this.

I'm pretty sure there were Red Sox fans (and Yankee haters) who got AT LEAST a chuckle out of Pedro getting the better of 117-yr-old Don Zimmer a couple of years back. And god knows the same folks cheered Varitek for getting into it with A-Rod at the plate as well. Pedro never slammed into Zimmer prompting Popeye's bullish charge onto the field, and A-Rod was simply jawing about being hit by a pitch before Tek took issue and got physical.
I truly understand your point, Datch. Barrett was out of line, period. But when you get out of line with an asshole who has practically begged for a good whippin' over time, you can't expect the majority of people to suddenly come to the defense of the butthead.

But you guys are missing my point...I'm not defending AJ Pierzinsky (sp?), far from it. But what got to me was this:
Seeing Barret just wack A.J. in the face was enertaining and I like Barret more so becasue of it.
regardless of what an asshole AJ is, Barnett should not be liked MORE because he sucker punched him in the face.
-edit- and you're right...I can't quite remember, but i'm sure I laughed when Pedro tossed Don Zimmer. But I definately lost respect for Pedro after the fact, when I wasn't caught up in the moment. (or however little respect I had for Pedro before that happened, since i've never really liked him all that much)

Exactly. A.J. is as big a jerk-asshole-fukwad-moron-idiot-loser as there is, which is why most people don't find it odd that he was fined. I hate the mofo with a passion and if he were to get drilled in the ribs with a heater I would find it comical, but his actions in this case do NOT warant a punishment by the authority figures in Baseball. Tickle his ribs with a fastball...yes...but a fine...no effing way.
As far Michael the Whiner, he should have gotten 30 days and a $100,000 fine. When you're blocking the plate and you get taken out with a legal hit, regardless whether you have the ball or not, you should take it like a man and answer with your bat. Unless you're a gutless coward like Barrett. :loser:

Sure it was a cheapshot, but I know for a fact that Pierzynski was regarded as a team cancer in SF, and he''s almost unbearable to watch. Just the way he carries himself, that little cocky attitude, it just makes people who respect the game hate you. Do players like Pujols or Tejada act like that, no. That's why no one has a problem with them.
The hit though, was justifiable. AJ tried to show up Barrett my slapping the plate in an intimidating fashion. OF course, no one likes to get shown up by a complete ass, so he retaliated. DJ(Sox TV announcer) said he would've done the same. Barrett was not only backing up himself, but the whole team as well. Maybe we are struggling, but that doesn't mean we're going to take shit from anyone.
Closing note: The suspension is reasonable. And if Sox fans want to argue about records or whatever, here's a question for you:
Where would the Sox be now if they didn't have Garcia, Buehrle, or Thome??? This is pretty much the Cubs situation.

There is no justification for such a cheapshot...period!
Correct me if i'm wrong, but wasn't the safe call only made after AJ hit the plate that second time? Furthermore, Barret was lying on the ground. I honestly don't think he saw AJ slap the plate when he did.
Mostly, people have respect for Pujols and Tejada because they are damn good players.

30 games? please. nothing he did warranted that. hell, even 10 games is more than sufficient.
and gutless? remember, it was oswalt who started everything a coupla years ago. he doesnt drill barrett in the back, nothing would have transpired after that. ;)

I agree that he shouldn't be fined or punished by MLB, but the reason it's funny is that AJ had it coming eventually. It was good to see an ass get hit because he deserved it. Was it right. No. And that is what makes it even funnier. An Ass got what he desrvedn a way he would have done it himself.
PEACE
