DETROIT -- Mike Maroth will undergo arthroscopic surgery Friday to remove bone chips in his left elbow, dealing a major blow to the Tigers' rotation.
The bone chips were discovered during tests conducted Wednesday by Angels team physician Dr. Lewis Yocum. Maroth met with Yocum to try to find the source of inflammation in his elbow that had been bothering him off and on since Spring Training and flared up again last week at Kansas City.
The Tigers won't release a timetable until after the surgery. However, it's expected the procedure will keep Maroth out of action until at least late July. Yankees pitcher Carl Pavano underwent similar surgery last week and isn't expected to resume a throwing program for at least six weeks. Others have come back sooner.
The news isn't a worst-case scenario for the Tigers, but it's worse than what they had hoped. Maroth has been able to pitch through the injury in the past, but it had affected his performance.
He was unable to gain much extension on his arm trying to throw through it last Thursday, when he retired just one batter in a six-run Royals first inning. Roman Colon relieved him that day and started in his place Tuesday against the Yankees, giving up five runs in 2 1/3 innings.
Maroth had been one of the most important members of a Tigers staff that leads the Majors in ERA. He went 5-2 with a 3.56 ERA in nine starts before being placed on the 15-day disabled list last Friday for the first time in his Major League career.
How the Tigers replace Maroth for a much longer time frame is another issue. Colon will start again in Maroth's spot Sunday against the Red Sox. However, manager Jim Leyland wouldn't say earlier this week that Colon would hold the spot for as long as Maroth is out, because he didn't know how much time Maroth would miss.
The Tigers called up Zach Miner from Triple-A Toledo Wednesday for relief help, but he's also 6-0 as a starter this year. Wilfredo Ledezma and Jordan Tata, two other starters at Toledo, were considered to take Maroth's spot before the Tigers opted for Colon.
