DETROIT -- Mike Maroth will undergo arthroscopic surgery Friday to remove bone chips in his left elbow, dealing a major blow to the Tigers' rotation.
The bone chips were discovered during tests conducted Wednesday by Angels team physician Dr. Lewis Yocum. Maroth met with Yocum to try to find the source of inflammation in his elbow that had been bothering him off and on since Spring Training and flared up again last week at Kansas City.

The Tigers won't release a timetable until after the surgery. However, it's expected the procedure will keep Maroth out of action until at least late July. Yankees pitcher Carl Pavano underwent similar surgery last week and isn't expected to resume a throwing program for at least six weeks. Others have come back sooner.

The news isn't a worst-case scenario for the Tigers, but it's worse than what they had hoped. Maroth has been able to pitch through the injury in the past, but it had affected his performance.

He was unable to gain much extension on his arm trying to throw through it last Thursday, when he retired just one batter in a six-run Royals first inning. Roman Colon relieved him that day and started in his place Tuesday against the Yankees, giving up five runs in 2 1/3 innings.

Maroth had been one of the most important members of a Tigers staff that leads the Majors in ERA. He went 5-2 with a 3.56 ERA in nine starts before being placed on the 15-day disabled list last Friday for the first time in his Major League career.

How the Tigers replace Maroth for a much longer time frame is another issue. Colon will start again in Maroth's spot Sunday against the Red Sox. However, manager Jim Leyland wouldn't say earlier this week that Colon would hold the spot for as long as Maroth is out, because he didn't know how much time Maroth would miss.

The Tigers called up Zach Miner from Triple-A Toledo Wednesday for relief help, but he's also 6-0 as a starter this year. Wilfredo Ledezma and Jordan Tata, two other starters at Toledo, were considered to take Maroth's spot before the Tigers opted for Colon.

Yep, Jen it does suck! Hopefully the team will be able to find someone to replace him for the time being and at least Maroth is not having Tommy John surgery which was my first thought when I read that Dr Yocum was involved.

Hopefully the Tigers can win the AL Central or at least the Wild Card and they can get Maroth back and in form in time for the playoffs. I've felt bad for Maroth ever since he lost 20, he didn't pitch great that season, but he didn't deserve to lose 20.

He did just fine pitching in 2003. He didn't deserve to lose those 20 games. He had no run support.

I agree that he didn't deserve to lose 20 in 2003, but he didn't pitch all that well:

9-21 5.73 ERA 231H 193IP 1.45WHIP .299AVG against

He toughed it out and pitched almost 200IP, but got hit alot.

5.73 era! He'd have had to have A LOT of run support to not have a losing record;)

No offense, but Maroth is not that good of a pitcher.. Even this year, although he is having a fine season, teams are hitting .290 vs him and he laways gives up a ton of hits and has a high WHIP...

it's not fair to stack up all those loses to him to be fair. You have no idea how many 1 point games we lost

I think Maroth is a very good pitcher. Plus when you have such a bad team your going to lose (the year he lost 20). But, in 2003 he did not pitch well as shown by a 5.73 ERA. He's going to be a great pitcher, this year if he hadn't got hurt. For that matter he was more than servicable the next two years. But in 2003 he stunk, and unfortunately the Tigers didn't have anyone else to put in and he was staying tough and trying to go late into games. So I have a lot of respect for him for the 20 lose season, he took it like a man. But a 5.73 era is a 5.73 era, your team needs to score runs like an All Star team to catch up to that.

PEACE
Brett

PS He does give up a bunch of hits, but he's also a groundball machine. So he can get away with that. I see him as a number 2-3 starter with the capabilties to become an ace.
