Mets face Dodgers to kick off road trip
By Chris Girandola / MLB.com
The Mets head to Los Angeles after losing their first series in three weeks when they dropped a 7-6 game in 12 innings to the Giants on Sunday. The Mets had won five series in a row before losing two of three to San Francisco to end their six-game homestand 3-3.
Alay Soler will try to improve on his last performance, in which he took the loss against the Diamondbacks on May 30. In the Mets' 7-2 loss, the 6-foot-1 right-hander allowed seven runs and eight hits with three walks and one strikeout in five innings. The 26-year-old Cuba native will make his third Major League start and will try to duplicate his first game, in which he gave up three runs, two earned, with five hits and five strikeouts in the Mets' 5-4 victory over the Phillies on May 24.
Brett Tomko takes the mound for the Dodgers and will attempt to get back on the winning track as well. The 10-year veteran who came over from the Giants in the offseason had won four games in a row with one no-decision and had only given up seven runs, five earned, in 33 innings pitched. But the 6-foot-2 right-hander has had three poor performances in a row recently with two losses consecutively.
Pitching matchup
NYM: RHP Alay Soler (0-1, 7.36 ERA)
Soler struggled with his command early in both of his games, as he's given up five runs combined in the first inning.
LA: RHP Brett Tomko (5-3, 4.38 ERA)
Tomko lasted three innings against the Braves on May 31, giving up seven runs, five earned, and six hits in the Dodgers' 9-3 loss. On May 26 against the Nationals, he gave up six runs and nine hits in a 10-4 Dodgers loss.
Player to watch
Paul Lo Duca makes a return trip to Los Angeles, where he played seven seasons with the Dodgers. The catcher had his best year as a pro in Los Angeles in 2001, when he batted .320 with 25 home runs and 90 RBIs in 125 games.
