Former Boston Red Sox teammates Pedro Martinez and Derek Lowe will oppose each other for the first time in their careers when the New York Mets continue their three-game series with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday at Dodger Stadium.
Both pitchers played key roles in helping the Red Sox win the World Series in 2004, then departed for new teams that offseason.
Martinez (5-1, 2.50 ERA) landed with the Mets (34-22) and started 5-0. The right-hander, though, hasn't won since April 28. He's pitched well, but has been the victim of poor run support, giving up only two earned runs in his last 24 innings but getting only 10 runs in his last six starts. Martinez is 0-1 with a 2.14 ERA during that span.
He started five times in May without earning a victory, the first time in his career he started five contests in a calendar month without winning.
"I know I'm going to win a lot more games," Martinez said.
Lowe (4-3, 2.68) went to Los Angeles (32-26) and has pitched well this season. He'll be looking for his fourth straight win, and has allowed one total run in his last three starts.
In 10 of Lowe's 12 starts, he hasn't allowed more than two earned runs.
"Outside of that first game, this guy's kept us right in every ballgame," Dodgers manager Grady Little said. "He's very dependable."
The right-hander is 0-1 with two saves and an 8.10 ERA in five career appearances against the Mets, but hasn't faced New York since July 13, 2001. This will be Lowe's first start against the Mets.
Martinez is 3-4 with a 3.43 ERA in eight starts against Los Angeles. He'll also be facing former teammate and new Dodger first baseman Nomar Garciaparra for the first time.
Garciaparra, hitting .366 in his first year with Los Angeles, played with Martinez in Boston from 1998 until midway through 2004, when he was traded to the Chicago Cubs.
The Mets beat the Dodgers 4-1 in Monday's series opener, the first meeting of the season between the teams. It was the start of a 10-game road trip for New York, which has won six of its last nine at Dodger Stadium.
Cuban defector Alay Soler picked up his first major league victory, and Jose Reyes and Carlos Delgado homered in the first inning for the Mets.
"The pitch to Delgado was a mistake," said Dodgers starter Brett Tomko, who took the loss. "He's the kind of hitter that if you make a mistake to him, he'll punish you for it."
Delgado's homer was his first since May 21 against the Yankees, a span of 12 games.
Garciaparra went 1-for-4 to extend his streak of reaching base to 29 games. The Dodgers have lost consecutive games for the first time since April 30-May 4, when they dropped five in a row.
