So I read an article Barzilla wrote last weekend and then see another one from Fox's Ken "I Never Met A Texan I Liked" Rosenthall :hmm: And I keep reading that Houston will now have the 3rd-highest payroll after adding Clemens last week, something around $104 million.

And I'm thinking, "Hmm, that can't be right. I added up the Mets' numbers earlier this year and they should be above that."

Don't get me wrong; somewhere in this forum is a post by me in which I remarked something about how wisely NYM's spent this winter. But I go to Useless Today's website and pull up their salary database and I'm like, "Whoa! The Mets' payroll this year is a quarter-mil less than 2005?!" No way, my math can't be that far off.

Didn't New York pay a portion of Cameron's salary in the trade to San Diego? Plus I see they're not calculating El Duque's extra salary over Julio's. James, where were my other math errors from earlier this year?

When i get some time, I'll look at the difference from last year to this year.. (sometime today I'll have the time)

I do know that a huge salary lost from last year is Piazza's 16 million... But we added Delgado (13 million+) and Wagner (10 million)

I also do know that the Pads are paying ALL of Cammeron's slary this season so we are off the hook for that....

With El Duque you add about a +2 million difference over Julio...

I'll look over the rest this afternoon..

I also do know that the Pads are paying ALL of Cammeron's slary this season so we are off the hook for that....Ok, I obviously misread that part when the deal went down. The USA Today database may not even calculate things like that if there was some sharing of salary, though I know they're adding Bagwell's salary into Houston's payroll even though some part of that will eventually be borne by the friggin' insurance buttmunches.

We also lost Benson's salary. Supposedly that was the very reason he was traded. :yadda:

Are we still paying Mo Vaughn??? ;)

*Note: Doesn't reflect the recent trade with Hernandez and Julio, which would add about 2 million to the 2006 payroll...

Also, i dont think that USA Today payroll is totally accurate.. I was looking up Mike Hampton and I remember when the Fish traded him to the Marlins, they were paying a HUGE chunk of his salary, but it shows all of his salary under the Braves payroll...

Willie, did you notice the Marlins payroll? Holy crap!

The D-Rays have the 2nd lowest payroll in all of baseball at $ 35,417,967.. The Marlins have the lowest at $ 14,998,500:eek:

That is the lowest team payroll since the Expos had a $ 9,202,000 payroll in 1998....

I think one of the places I didn't account for was the Benson deal.

By the way, I do believe Bobby Bonilla still has his hooks in the Mets for a little bit. Think there were a couple of very small payments (less than a million) due him like in 2007 and 2010, something like that.

You may be right on Bonilla... I have no idea what kind of bonehead contract the Mets gave him.. I thought he was getting paid thru 2010 in some way as well...

Here's an ESPN one that looks more accurate as they have El Duque's on it... It actually shows a LOWER payroll...

Wow, I always thought the Mets were at number two. Quite interesting that they dropped down to #5. And even more interesting is that they're such a huge contender with having shaved a smidgen off last year's payroll!

I think a lot has to do with not only upgrading the talent but also the chemistry.. You can see it, this team has great chemistry!

Robin, I believe the Red Sox are #2.

Also, Matsui's salary no longer counts as part of our payroll since he's now with the Rockies.

Just like the Yankees' payroll is artificially lower than it would be if they included the fact that they are paying both Jose Contreras and Javier Vasquez to play for the White Sox. In addition, last year they also had to pay Jeff Weaver to play for the Dodgers.
