Who was the first NL player to hit HR's off of 40 different pitchers in a single season?

Good guess, but no. You'll get it on your next try.

Hack Wilson?
He was the first NL'er to hit HR's off 30 different pitchers. You're looking for someone between Wilson and Big Mac.

Not Bench, but he has something in common with him.

Can't think of anything they'd really have in common with Bench, but I'll throw out Dave Kingman and Kevin Mitchell as possible teammates of Foster who might have done it.

Not King Kong or the idiot Mitchell, but he was an outfielder.

Willie Mays? Guess he has the HOF in common with Bench, was a teammate of Foster's and is an outfielder.

1965 Willie hit 41 of his 52 HR's off different pitchers. He also touched up Bob Friend for 4 HR's in '65.

Mays hit the 600th HR of his career in a pinch hitting role. He was batting for George Foster.

You're correct about the Bench/Mays connection Willie.

Not this again. Sounds like a question we had a couple years ago.
