Ben Roethlisberger has just been in a motorcycle wreck I heard on the radio. They have closed down the roads all around they said. Not wearing a helmet also. Hope all is ok! :(

Here is the quote from the paper. It is hard to get to so I will just put the quote.
Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger suffered a serious head injury this morning after his motorcycle collided with a car on Second Avenue near the 10th Street Bridge, police said.
Roethlisberger, who was not wearing a helmet, collided with a Chrysler sedan shortly before 11:25 a.m. and was thrown off his motorcycle, flying headfirst into the car's windshield "with a pretty good force," said a veteran city police officer.
Roethlisberger was taken to Mercy Hospital, said a Steelers spokesman, who declined to provide other information.
The car, which has Maine license plates, was turning left onto the 10th Street Bridge from Second Avenue and Roethlisberger was driving straight on Second and apparently was not looking when he collided with the car, police said.
Police closed down the bridge, Second Avenue and the Armstrong Tunnels.

You're quick. I just saw it on the news too, and of course this was the first place I went.
I hope he doesn't die. Anytime a person goes over the handlebars and goes crashing into a windshield head first without a helmet can be extremely serious.

A witness told Channel 4 Action News that Roethlisberger went over the handlebars, hit the windshield of another vehicle and then hit the ground.
Roethlisberger was taken to Mercy Hospital. There is no word on the extent of his injuries.

In May 2005, Steelers coach Bill Cowher lectured Roethlisberger on the dangers of riding without a helmet.
"He talked about being a risk-taker and I'm not really a risk-taker. I'm pretty conservative and laid back, but the big thing is to just be careful," Roethlisberger said at the time. "I'll just continue to be careful. I told him we don't ever ride alone, we always ride in a group of people, and I think it makes it even more safe."

I have never thought it was fine to not wear a helmet. Lost one of my best friends in college to an accident without a helmet. Unfortunately, for some reason, the stupid state of Pennsylvania doesnt think that you need one.

The story about the jaw is so far just speculation. The doctor came out and simply said "he is in serious but stable condition... he is in surgery right now.... That is all I am saying... No questions..."
Supposed to be a police report released after 3pm. Unfortunately, I will be at work by then.

I assume he's known as a 'man about town' in pittsburgh, right? There was some guy impersonating him once, and I don't think he would have done that if it wasn't likely that Rothburger was running around pitt-town. So I likely assume that's why he doesn't(didn't? LOL) like to wear a helmet. He probably likes to be recognized.
Anyways I hope Ben does good. His story being from Ohio, and the small college he played for is kindof an inspiration to me. Plus I still can't understand how ppl overlooked his skills. Maybe I wouldn't trade Palmer for him, but he is likely just as good.
He is the Pittsburgh Steelers success..........it would be crappy if he was out for any length of time this season.

This was in Phoenix, AZ. I was thinking........what a nitwit. I was in the right to cross a yellow light, but if he had ran through he would have been dead, and I would have been locked up for vehicular homicide. Doesn't seem fair does it?

Roethlisberger injury update
By Jill King Greenwood and and Karen Roebuck
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Monday, June 12, 2006
Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is in serious but stable condition and in surgery this afternoon following a serious head injury this morning after his motorcycle collided with a car on Second Avenue near the 10th Street Bridge, police said.
Roethlisberger lost most of his teeth, fractured his left sinus cavity bone, suffered a nine-inch laceration to the back of his head and a broken jaw, and severely injured both of his knees when he hit the ground, police said.
A plastic surgeon has been summoned.
"He is right now in the (operating room) undergoing some surgery from injuries he received in this accident today," said Dr. Larry Jones, chief of trauma and burns at Mercy Hospital, Uptown. ... He was talking to me before he left for the OR. He's coherent. He's making sense. He knows what happened."
Roethlisberger, 24, who was not wearing a helmet, collided with a Chrysler New Yorker shortly before 11:25 a.m. and was thrown off his motorcycle, flying head-first into the car's windshield "with a pretty good force," said a veteran city police officer.
Roethlisberger was talking and moving his arms and legs after the accident. He suffered injuries to his face and lost several teeth, according to city firefighters.
The injured quarterback was taken to Mercy Hospital, said a Steelers spokesman, who declined to provide other information.
The car, which has Maine license plates, was heading west on Second Avenue and was turning left onto the 10th Street Bridge. Roethlisberger was driving east on Second Avenue riding a Suzuki Hayabusa and collided with the car at the intersection of the bridge and the Armstrong Tunnels.
Several teammates, including backup quarterback Charlie Batch, linebacker Joey Porter and safety Mike Logan, arrived at the hospital emergency room but did not comment. The team planned to issue a statement later Monday, but no one from the team would be made available, said spokesman Dave Lockett, who left the hospital at about 2:40 p.m.
Roethlisberger, who led the Steelers to a Super Bowl championship this year, slammed into the windshield, rolled over the car and landed on the pavement, striking his head again, said a woman who witnessed the accident.
The witness, who declined to give her name, asked Roethlisberger several times if he was OK. He eventually replied, "My name is Ben."
He asked: "Where am I?"
"You're at the Armstrong Tunnel," the witness said.
"What city is that in?" he said.
"Pittsburgh," the woman replied.
Roethlisberger fell silent for about a minute and then tried to stand up.
"I'm OK," he said.
"No you're not," said the woman, who instructed him to stay still.
Pittsburgh homicide detectives are investigating the accident, which is standard procedure when critical injuries are involved, said city police Lt. Kevin Kraus.
Roethlisberger's 2005 Suzuki Hayabusa, which is named after a Japanese bird of prey, was totaled. The front wheel was broken in half. The handle bars were broken. The left pedal was shattered. The 170-horsepower bike, which weighs 500 pounds fully loaded, was targeted by law enforcement agencies worldwide after its 1998 debut because it could reach a top speed of 189 mph.
Suzuki Motorcycles of North America gave Roethlisberger the bike as part of a promotional deal in exchange for him appearing at several Suzuki dealerships in the area, including Andrews Cycle in Salem, Ohio where he picked up the motorcycle last summer. Andrews' sales staff declined comment.
The motorcycle is popular among first-time buyers, said Steve Stiller, a salesman at Northgate Motorcycles in Cranberry, Butler County.
Roethlisberger has said in the past that he prefers not to wear a helmet when riding his motorcycle. He has pointed out Pennsylvania's 35-year-old state law requiring helmets to be worn was amended to make helmets optional.
In May 2005, Steelers coach Bill Cowher lectured Roethlisberger on the dangers of riding without a helmet.
"He talked about being a risktaker and I'm not really a risktaker. I'm pretty conservative and laid back, but the big thing is to just be careful," Roethlisberger said at the time. "I'll just continue to be careful. I told him we don't ever ride alone, we always ride in a group of people, and I think it makes it even more safe."
In May 2005, Cleveland Browns tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. tore knee ligaments in a motorcycle accident and was lost for the season.
Roethlisberger continued to ride after Winslow's accident and that angered Terry Bradshaw, who quarterbacked the Steelers to four Super Bowl victories during the 1970s.
Visiting the Steelers' training camp last summer, Bradshaw remarked: "Ride it when you retire."
Earlier this year, Roethlisberger led the Steelers to the NFL title, giving the team the fifth Super Bowl win they had been chasing since 1980.

Big Ben in serious condition after motorcycle accident
ESPN.com news services

PITTSBURGH -- Steelers star Ben Roethlisberger, the youngest quarterback to lead a team to the Super Bowl championship, broke his jaw and nose in a motorcycle crash Monday and underwent surgery.
Roethlisberger was in serious but stable condition Monday afternoon, said Dr. Larry Jones, chief of trauma at Mercy Hospital. The player's agent, Leigh Steinberg, described the injuries to The Associated Press and said he did not know if there was further damage.
"He was talking to me before he left for the operating room," Jones said before the operation. "He's coherent. He's making sense. He knows what happened. He knows where he is. From that standpoint, he's very stable."
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, citing a police source, reported Roethlisberger also broke his left sinus cavity, suffered a 9-inch laceration to the back of his head, lost teeth and has knee injuries from hitting the pavement. A plastic surgeon has been called in, the source said.
Steelers president Art Rooney said the team was "encouraged by the early reports from the medical team" at the hospital.
"I am sure Ben knows that we are praying for his complete recovery," he said.
The 24-year-old Roethlisberger likes to ride without a helmet, a habit that once prompted coach Bill Cowher to lecture him on the dangers.
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported that Roethlisberger wasn't wearing a helmet. The Associated Press reported it wasn't clear whether he was wearing a helmet or not.
The crash happened at an intersection at the edge of downtown at about 11:30 a.m. A pool of blood was still visible there by early afternoon.
Police spokesman Lt. Kevin Kraus said police and homicide units were investigating the crash, something standard when there is an accident with critical injuries. Kraus would give no details on the extent of Roethlisberger's injuries or if anyone else was injured.
The accident occurred on Second Avenue near the intersection of 10th Street in Pittsburgh, around 11:30 a.m. The route is one often taken in traveling to the Steelers' facility in the Southside section of the city.
Several teammates, including backup quarterback Charlie Batch, linebacker Joey Porter and safety Mike Logan, arrived at the hospital emergency room but did not comment.
A silver Chrysler New Yorker with damage to the front passenger fender was removed and Roethlisberger's bike was loaded onto a flatbed truck. Police were detouring traffic around the crash scene as onlookers and media gathered.
One of his agents, Ryan Tollner, is in route to Pittsburgh for what was supposed to be a pre-planned trip and will arrive later Monday.
In only his second year in the NFL, Roethlisberger became the youngest quarterback to lead a team to the Super Bowl championship. He was 23 when he did it last February.
Roethlisberger has said in the past that he prefers not to wear a helmet. He has pointed out Pennsylvania's 35-year-old state law requiring helmets to be worn was amended to make helmets optional.
In May 2005, Cowher warned him about safe riding after Cleveland tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. was injured in a motorcycle accident. Winslow tore knee ligaments and was lost for the season.
ESPN.com football writers Len Pasquarelli and John Clayton and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Coming home today I got held up at the 10th street overpass when I got out to see what happened.
After hearing people talk it turns out Ben Roethlisberger had been in a serious car vs Bike wreck.
Ben was getting loaded into an ambulance and while watching the emergency personel working I bent over and picked up some items off the ground.
I cant gaurantee the items but they were very very close to the wrecked vehicles.

And now there is this report coming out.....
We're hearing scattered rumors and reports that the reportedly "serious" knee injuries suffered by Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger are not structural in nature, and are instead the result of Roethlisberger's knees being "skinned" on the pavement. WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh, which had been parroting the Tribune-Review's gloom-and-doom assessment of Roethlisberger's knee injuries, recently has reported that the knee injuries involve the skin and not the joints.
If accurate, this would be a hugely positive development for the team and for Roethlisbeger, and it meshes with information we received earlier from a league source who told us that, beyond the broken jaw, Ben's injuries are not serious.
rockin500
06-12-2006, 06:18 PM
yeah, thats why i was sketchy about the knee thing. I figured the knees would be fine other than a little superficial damage.
Thats what i got out of the WGN report from a guy from Pittsburgh at around 2:30 this afternoon.
In reality, Ben is very lucky, the driver of the car will need to flee the city, and he could have gotten this while riding on a bicycle or driving a car. though maybe not losing all the teeth.
7 weeks is what is bandied about as that is the most serious thing here.

i dont know. having a helmet would have helped, but he would have still knocked out some teeth most likely, especially if its not a full helmet which a lot of bikers dont use. same with the jaw. now, the lacerations and the fractured sinus cavity you are correct.
I'm sure he learned his lesson though.

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger lacked both a helmet and a valid Pennsylvania motorcycle license when he crashed Monday, according to Pittsburgh police sources, but he did have a prior warning: The Steelers told him last year that continued riding might affect his contract. A letter sent by the Steelers last year to Mr. Roethlisberger's agent put the player on notice that the team considered riding a motorcycle as a dangerous activity that might affect his contract if he were injured doing so. ... That same agent noted that the Steelers' letter to Mr. Steinberg would have no effect on the contract since that is not what was signed by both parties when the deal was negotiated. "But I promise you this," the agent said, "his next contract, it will be in there."

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was upgraded to fair condition and could be released from Mercy Hospital by the end of the week, his doctor said yesterday. He was also transferred from the recovery room to an undisclosed unit at the hospital, said Dr. Larry M. Jones, chief of the multisystem trauma division. Dr. Jones listed the quarterback's injuries: fractures of the upper and lower jaws, facial bones and nose; a mild concussion; multiple head lacerations, and multiple abrasions and contusions; and two lost teeth and several chipped teeth. His knees were not damaged, and a CT scan indicated there was no brain injury.

I look at motorcyle riders as I do smokers. They give everyone else on the road second hand smoke. What I mean is, they not only endanger themselves but everyone else on the road. If you hit somebody on a motorcycle and kill them you'll get sent to prison. Even if it's not your fault. Everytime I see somebody on the road I think: That asshole didn't even ask before he got me involved.
