Tom Glavine looks to win his eighth straight decision and become the NL's first 10-game winner when he starts for the surging New York Mets against the NL East rival Philadelphia Phillies in the opener of a three-game series on Tuesday at Citizens Bank Park.

Glavine (9-2, 3.06 ERA) started the Mets' five-game win streak when he allowed six runs, seven hits and three walks in 5 1-3 innings of a 9-7 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday. The left-hander had thrown at least six innings in 27 straight starts, dating to last July 15.

"It wasn't pretty, but I'll take it," the 40-year-old Glavine said. "You've got to win games like that once in a while."

Glavine recorded a win against the Phillies (33-30) for the first time since he signed with New York (39-23) in 2003 on May 10, allowing three runs and four hits over seven innings in a 13-4 victory in Philadelphia.

Glavine, seeking career win No. 285, is 25-16 with a 3.77 ERA in 56 starts against Philadelphia.

The Mets, owners of the NL's best record, extended their lead to 6 1/2 games over second-place Philadelphia with a 15-2 win over Arizona on Sunday, completing a four-game sweep of the Diamondbacks.

New York has won five straight overall.

"We've done a great job this year of winning series," Mets manager Willie Randolph said. "Every once in a while, it's nice to sweep it and go four in a row. That's even sweeter."

Carlos Beltran has a hit in each of the Mets' wins during the streak, batting .545 (12-for-22) with three homers, 12 RBIs, 11 runs and four steals in that stretch.

Ryan Madson (6-3, 5.71) has won both of his decisions in three starts since he made his last relief appearance on May 23, when he went seven innings before allowing Beltran's walk-off homer in the 16th inning of the Mets' 9-8 win on May 23.

In his last start, Madson allowed three runs and eight hits in 7 2-3 innings in a 7-3 win on Wednesday at Arizona.

"It's a big opportunity for me," Madson said. "I have to do it right now. That's what I'm telling myself, because you never know when your next opportunity will be."

The Phillies were shut out for the first time this season on Sunday, 6-0 by Washington, and lost three of four in the series.

Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins is batting .354 (17-for-48) with two homers and eight RBIs against Glavine, while left fielder Pat Burrell is hitting .292 (14-for-48) with three homers and 11 RBIs against the left-hander. Burrell has more homers (33) and RBIs (87) against the Mets than he does against any other team.

Mets left fielder Cliff Floyd is expected to return Tuesday from an ankle injury that has sidelined him for the last five games.
